Book excerpt: Age analysis for 22 years (1980 excluded) showed that the overall percentages for female spawners was 53% (4-year olds), 38% (3-year olds), and 9% (5-year olds). The age composition of male spawners showed a high degree of variability throughout the study. Male chinook of age 2, 3 and 4 were dominant annually, but 5- and 6- year old fish were present in most spawning seasons. All chinook carcasses from which scales were collected were also measured for length (over 120 samples in 22 years). Decreases in mean length were documented for all age classes for each of the El Nino episodes that occurred during the study (1982-1984; 1992-1993; 1997-1998). The decreases in mean length appeared to carry forward for each cohort's age class. The total number of chinook redds was tabulated by counting "fresh" redds during weekly spawning surveys. The mean number of redds was 117 for the 23-year period with a mean of 0.9 redds per adult salmon or 1.8 redds per female.

Sa voix me répondit, très lointaine : — Le feu était ardent mais il ne s’élevait pas sans fumée. Puis j’entendis l’écho de ses pas s’affaiblir et se perdre dans la distance. Et je connus cette angoisse : la nuit de l’esprit par l’absence de Jésus. Parmi les ombres froides de cette nuit désolée, je fus dans un désert où il n’y avait plus de chemins ni de poteaux indicateurs. Mon seul Guide étant parti, j’errais, horriblement solitaire, comme au hasard. J’essayais de prier, mais toutes mes prières, en vain dardées vers le ciel, retombaient autour de moi, comme une poignée de sable sur une terre à jamais aride : elles se dispersaient au souffle des vents âpres qui balaient cette noire étendue. Si je faisais effort pour les renouveler, je ne parvenais à les articuler qu’avec ennui et dégoût. Je tentais de me réfugier dans l’Évangile, verger miraculeux où, naguère, Jésus m’avait permis de récolter les fruits suprasubstantiels de son enseignement. Mais il me sembla que c’était un enclos où ne végétaient que des arbres stériles. Bientôt il me devint impossible de prier ou de concevoir une fin à cet abandon. Le désert intérieur reculait ses limites à l’infini ; les ténèbres devenaient de plus en plus épaisses. Elles pesaient si fort que mon âme fléchit. Gisante sur le sol, ne pouvant même pas pleurer, suant une sueur sanglante, elle demeurait inerte dans le silence affreux que déchirait parfois le rire funèbre de celui qui se nomme : le père de la désespérance éternelle.

Book excerpt: A cooperative study involving the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and the Taku River Tlingit First Nation was conducted to estimate the number of spawning Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha in the Taku River in 2003 with a mark-recapture experiment. Fish were captured at Canyon Island on the lower Taku River with fish wheels from May through August and were individually marked with back-sewn, solid-core spaghetti tags. All tagged fish were also batch marked with an opercle punch plus removal of the left axillary appendage. Sampling on the spawning grounds in tributaries was used to estimate the fraction of the population that had been marked. The estimated spawning abundance of small Chinook salmon ( 400 mm long; mid-eye to fork of tail) was 3,489 (SE = 1,052). Spawning abundance of medium-size Chinook salmon (401-659 mm) was estimated to be 16,780 (SE = 2,274). Finally, spawning abundance of large-size fish (= 660 mm) was estimated to be 36,435 (SE = 6,705), and the estimated total of all fish was 56,704 (SE = 7,158). The sum of the peak aerial survey counts of large spawning Chinook salmon conducted at five index tributaries of the Taku River was 16% of the mark-recapture estimate. Age 1.3 fish (1998 brood year) constituted an estimated 40% of the spawning population, followed by age 1.2 fish (1999 brood year), which constituted an estimated 29% of the population

Book excerpt: Salmon specialists throughout the Pacific Coast indicate that the winter-run Chinook salmon is restricted to California's Sacramento River system. The characteristics and habits of the race are unique in the following respects: Fresh-water holding period, December to April; spawning period, April into July. The up-migration is concurrent with the late segments of the fall run, but the adults are distinguishable by the green condition of the gonads. The down-migration is concurrent with that of the spring-run fry, but the migrants are 2-inch or larger fingerlings. Evidence is lacking to determine whether there is an earlier down-migration of fry. The race appears to hold great promise as a stock to be introduced into areas where May-August temperatures are 42.5 degrees - 57.5 degrees F., for it supports superb angling during the fresh-water holding period. Water temperatures in May through August are seen as the factor limiting the natural extension of the range of the race.
