Book excerpt: This is the first study of the behaviour and habitat preferences of bowhead whales ('Balaena mysticetus') in northern Foxe Basin, Nunavut, Canada. The study is divided into two parts; the first part examined the characteristics of bowhead habitat and the second part describes the behaviour of bowheads during the ice-edge season. Characteristics of bowhead habitat were identified by quantifying relationships between habitat variables (water depth, surface temperatures, ice conditions, and zooplankton densities) and the distribution of whales recorded during strip-transect surveys through a 4 x 4 km quadrat system, in July and August 1997. Two study areas were examined: "A" was examined in July (ice-edge season), when land-fast ice was present on the northern edge of the study area and "B" was examined in August (open-water season), when pack ice is present. Relationships between habitat variables and whale distribution were identified with Mantel tests. The second part of the study examined the behavior of bowheads during the ice-edge. Poiani and Dixson invite the reader to embark on a journey through the evolutionary, biological, psychological and sociological aspects of homosexuality, seeking an understanding of both the proximate and evolutionary causes of homosexual behavior and orientation in humans, other mammals and birds. The authors also provide a synthesis of what we know about homosexuality into a biosocial model that links recent advances in reproductive skew theory and various selection mechanisms to produce a comprehensive framework that will be useful for anyone teaching or planning future research in this field.

[...] Between 1979 and 2 Central and Arctic Hudson Bay/Foxe Basin Bowheads 1996, there was no licensed hunt of Baffin Bay-Davis Strait whales consist of bowheads in the Hudson Bay-Foxe Basin one stock and to determine the relationship stock. [...] If Cumberland Sound whales Foxe Basin and those around Repulse Bay are representative of the Baffin Bay-Davis belong to the same population and that these Strait population, then Hudson Bay-Foxe estimates could be added, giving a total Basin bowheads and Baffin Bay-Davis Strait estimate of about 345 bowheads in the stock. [...] This, in combination with the Aerial surveys have not sampled the conclusions of the Inuit Bowhead complete summering range of this stock and Knowledge Study, suggests that the stock underestimate total stock size.

Most were found along the interface between the coastal landfast ice and the drifting pack ice, especially around the mouths of bays. The mark and recapture data indicated a low population (60-90 bears) in the area. Fifty to 80% fewer polar bears and tracks were seen per 100 km of potential habitat surveyed than recorded for other areas of the Arctic. This also indicates a smaller population"--Abstract.
