Book excerpt: Goslings is a thrilling post-apocalyptic adventure. The story starts when a plague kills most of England's male population. It revolves around the Gosling family, free to fulfill its long-frustrated desires after the epidemic. Mr. Gosling leaves his home to pursue his sexual desires, and the Gosling daughters, with a lack of experience and self-independence, find shelter in a female-dominated agricultural community. However, their new life is endangered because of the community elders' opinions on free love. The author used excellently realistic details in an ironic description of a wrecked world through the lens of a lower-middle-class London family. It is a remarkable comedy of manners and a brilliant commentary on life that talks about sexual and social equality. It is a must-read for science fiction fans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the fall of 1918 to summer 1919, six YWCA women are attached to the North Russia Expeditionary Forces, an international military mission posted in the city of Arkhangelsk, North Russia. With this change, Clara Taylor’s second year working for the YWCA in Russia turns out to be vastly different from her previous year in Moscow. No longer teaching home economics or surveying factory conditions, Clara now finds herself dancing with soldiers at parties, then learning of their deaths in action the next day; reading to ill soldiers in the hospital; and serving hot coffee to ragtag men on the front lines of the Vologda railroad front in the bitter Russian winter. Throughout, she remains strong, courageous, and dedicated to her ideals of service. Even her own hospitalization for appendicitis does not stop her from supporting others in an untenable situation. Able to let loose about her own political views in these letters, Clara writes scathing commentary about the ineptitude of the military command. She also writes of the frozen landscape, the astounding beauty of the northern lights, homesickness, the strength of the Russian people, and, finally, the overwhelming joy of returning home to her family.

Book Reflection

Download or read book Reflection written by Richard Mousseau and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expectations of what was to be seen reflecting off of the smooth surface of the water trough was not to be. Clear blue-green water, filled to the brim clearly showed an aged face of a man mystified by a personal image. Hints of specific features were reminiscent of Father's, the family's inherited nose, dad's black eyes in furrowed brows and even Mother's hidden silent humour. Where had the years gone? Bits of recalled memories drift in and out of the mind's eye, though not in chronicle order. Dates and years as mixed up as the faces of people at various stages of life. Faces were familiar though names were difficult to recall. Dates, years and ages were non existent. The stories were most prevalent, most vivid with minute details and background facts connected to others and their stories. Farm animals; their personalities and stories also intermingled in time frames of Ed's life, maybe more affectionate than family and close friends. Animals are funny, serious and emotional.

Book excerpt: Until the middle of the last century, London's social calendar was dominated by 'the Season', a round of social events and parties during which the daughters of the upper classes made their 'debuts'. Debutantes and their families descended on the capital from all over Britain to take part in this elaborate process that in its blend of glamour, great privilege and archaic and sometimes comic ritual is emblematic of a world now lost. From the preparations and formalities of court presentation to the exhausting round of parties that followed, Debutantes and the London Season is a detailed look at a phenomenon that was central to the lives of generations of privileged young ladies.
