Book excerpt: AFTER VILLON, the new book from Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize finalist Roger Farr, is a book of contemporary verse translations and queer variations based on the work of 15th century poete maudit Francois Villon. Villon's poetry, written in medieval French and incorporating the argot of the Parisian criminal underworld, is notoriously bawdy, opaque, and resistant to straightforward translation. For this reason, Villon's work continues to be of considerable interest to poets, artists, and scholars working today. AFTER VILLON is informed by previous ventures into Villon's work by Ezra Pound (who invented a new poetic form, the villonaud), Basil Bunting, William Carlos Williams, and, especially, Jack Spicer, who similarly translated Lorca in his influential After Lorca (1957) and Jean Calais (Stephen Rodefer), whose chauvinist / beatnik version of the poet stepped forward in Villon (1987). Roger Farr's new re--workings capture the in--group opacity in Villon's work by mingling slangs from a variety of discourses and sites, everything from prison, theatre, culinary, military, to carnie slang. In his translations, Farr subverts sex and gender designations by shifting pronouns, changing names, and refusing heteronormative assumptions about the copious gaps in meaning of the original texts. Poetry. LGBTQIA+ Studies. Translation.

Book Ezra Pound s Early Verse and Lyric Tradition

Download or read book Ezra Pound s Early Verse and Lyric Tradition written by Robert Stark and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traces the lyricism and musicality in Pound's early verse through to his radical Modernist style. Robert Stark argues that Pound learned how to write poetry more or less as if it was a foreign tongue - or poetic 'jargon' - with a unique lexicon, grammar, and even morphology, and that his most innovative poetry is the result of his ambivalent orientation towards different European literary traditions.Stark contextualizes Pound's poetic craft by examining his relationship to the Mediaeval and Classical originators of the methods he employs and by considering the practice and criticism of his immediate Victorian and Romantic predecessors. He explores the influence of poets such as Francois Villon, Guido Cavalcanti, Robert Burns, Robert Browning, Algernon Charles Swinburne and Walt Whitman on Pound's lyrical style. For Stark, Pound's multi-vocalism arises out of his interest in dialect and the acoustic qualities of speech which leads to a 'modern' barbarous language marked by polysemy and heterogeneity.

Book The Margins of Society in Late Medieval Paris

Download or read book The Margins of Society in Late Medieval Paris written by Bronislaw Geremek and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-04-27 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the 'marginal' people of late medieval Paris, the large and shifting group of men and women who existed on the margins of conventional organized society. Professor Geremek examines the various groups which made up the marginal world - beggars, prostitutes, procuresses and pimps, petty criminals, casual workers and the unemployed - their haunts in and around Paris, their way of life, and their relation to 'normal' society. Professor Geremek has made with this book a major contribution to the study of late medieval society which illuminates the little-known area of the medieval underworld in a fascinating and very accessible manner. Translated by Jean Birrell from the French edition of 1976, this edition includes a new introduction by Jean-Claude Schmitt, which offers a frank appraisal of the author's life and career to date.

Download or read book Christmas in July written by Diane Jacobs and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first critical biography of Preston Sturges, Diane Jacobs brings to life the great comic filmmaker whose career Andrew Sarris described as "one of the most brilliant and bizarre bursts of creation in the history of the American cinema." Jacobs uses letters and manuscripts never before revealed, as well as interviews with people who knew Sturges—including three of his wives—to portray this fascinating, contradictory man. In addition to discussing his major films, she also examines heretofore unknown work and shows that Sturges was highly creative even near the end of his life, a time when many believed he had lost his touch. Sturges secured his place in film history as the creator of such classic films as The Lady Eve, Sullivan's Travels, and The Palm Beach Story. In 1939 he became the first screenwriter to win the right to direct his own script—the result was the Oscar-winning The Great McGinty. Creator of Unfaithfully Yours, The Miracle of Morgan's Creek, and Hail the Conquering Hero, he was the third highest-paid man in the United States by the late 1940s. He owned a swank Hollywood restaurant and was known as an ebullient raconteur as well as a world-famous filmmaker. A little over a decade later, Sturges died in New York, impoverished and rejected by Hollywood. The euphoria of success, the fitfulness of luck, the promise and poignancy of the American Dream—the themes of Sturges's work also marked the man. Diane Jacobs achieves a singular success in illuminating his extraordinary life.
