Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the Civil War changed the face of war The Civil War represented a momentous change in the character of war. It combined the projection of military might across a continent on a scale never before seen with an unprecedented mass mobilization of peoples. Yet despite the revolutionizing aspects of the Civil War, its leaders faced the same uncertainties and vagaries of chance that have vexed combatants since the days of Thucydides and the Peloponnesian War. A Savage War sheds critical new light on this defining chapter in military history. In a masterful narrative that propels readers from the first shots fired at Fort Sumter to the surrender of Robert E. Lee's army at Appomattox, Williamson Murray and Wayne Wei-siang Hsieh bring every aspect of the battlefield vividly to life. They show how this new way of waging war was made possible by the powerful historical forces unleashed by the Industrial Revolution and the French Revolution, yet how the war was far from being simply a story of the triumph of superior machines. Despite the Union’s material superiority, a Union victory remained in doubt for most of the war. Murray and Hsieh paint indelible portraits of Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, and other major figures whose leadership, judgment, and personal character played such decisive roles in the fate of a nation. They also examine how the Army of the Potomac, the Army of Northern Virginia, and the other major armies developed entirely different cultures that influenced the war’s outcome. A military history of breathtaking sweep and scope, A Savage War reveals how the Civil War ushered in the age of modern warfare.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prentice-Hall Tax Service for 1919 This allowance is not based upon the difference between the actual war cost of such facilities and what they would have cost at pre-war prices. Obviously the taxpayer is not entitled to recover or extinguish through amortization more than the difference between the war cost of such property and what he can sell the property for after the war, or if he continues to need and use it in his business, what it would have cost him after the war. As the rule is expressed in Article 183 of the Regulations: The total amount to be extinguished by amortization, in general, is the excess of the unextinguished or unrecovered cost of the property over its maximum value (either for sale or for use as part of the plant or equipment of a going business) under stable post war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The "War of Extermination" Professors, as they could afford to advance, met the expenses of the whole establishment, including the Eye Infirmary; most of the patients in which, were beneficiaries. The loss of the watermen, was followed of course, by the loss of the income from pupils, for the number of our patients was too small to warrant our selling hospital tickets; and con sequently, our revenues for the support of the Eye Infirmary, were dried up. We, however, kept the establishment open, for more than a twelve-month afterwards, giving our students gratuitous admission, and sustaining its expenses from our ticket money as Professors; but finding the expense, too much to be borne, it was closed at the beginning of February, last, and thus, the pupils of our College, and the patients of the Cincinnati Eye Infirmary, (the latter chiefly poor persons of Ohio) were at once shut out from the benefits of instruction and cure, which it was fondly hoped, had been permanently created for them, without calling on our friends, society, or the state. It is to re mind the people of the South that the very fact that the war has gone against them makes it more important that its records should not fall entirely to the pens of their enemies. All per sons in the South who assist in gathering the true testimony of their unfortunate struggle, perform a last, but most important office of faithful love, and do a noble work in rescuing the name of a lost cause from the slanders of those who, having been our accusers and executioners in this present time, would also be our judges at the Bar of History. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Diary in America in the Midst of War, Vol. 1 of 2 You are aware, dear Sir, that the great majority of your countrymen are born public speakers. You are regularly educated to oratory; you imbibe, almost with your mother's milk, a capacity for expressing yourselves coherently; you appear in public, and speak in public, at an age when young Englishmen, if they presumed to state their opinions in the presence of their elders, would be peremptorily requested to hold their tongues; and so easy (as a rule) is the flow of your rhetoric, and so well-balanced are your sentences, that I have often thought that in your nonage you lisp in well-formed periods - for the periods come - and point your thoughts with mental semicolons. You are always ready to rise, address an audience large or small, move resolutions or respond to "sentiments." Book A Yeoman s Letters Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Yeoman s Letters Classic Reprint written by P. T. Ross and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Yeoman's Letters "More khaki," sniffed a bored but charming lady, as she glanced at a picture of the poor Yeomanry at Lindley, and then hastily turned away to something of greater interest. I overheard the foregoing at the Royal Academy, soon after my return from South Africa, last May, and thanked the Fates that I was in mufti. It was to a certain extent indicative of the jaded interest with which the War is now being followed by a large proportion of the public at home, the majority of whom, I presume, have no near or dear ones concerned in the affair; a public which cheered itself hoarse and generally made "a hass" of itself many months ago in welcoming certain warriors whose period of active service had been somewhat short. I wonder how the veterans of the Natal campaign, the gallant Irish Brigade, and others, will be received when they return? "Come back from the War! What War?" And yet in spite of this apathy, "War Books" keep appearing, and here is a simple Yeoman thrusting yet another on the British Public. Still 'twere worse than folly to apologise, for qui s' excuse, s' accuse. The present unpretentious volume is composed of letters written to a friend from South Africa, during the past twelve months, with a few necessary omissions and additions; the illustrations which have been introduced, are reproductions in pen and ink of pencil sketches done on the veldt or in hospital. The sole aim throughout has been to represent a true picture of the every-day life of a trooper in the Imperial Yeomanry. In many cases the "grousing" of the ranker may strike the reader as objectionable, and had this record been penned in a comfortable study, arm-chair philosophy might have caused many a passage to be omitted. But the true campaigning atmosphere would have been sacrificed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book ACTA Ridleiana

Download or read book ACTA Ridleiana written by Ridley College and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Acta Ridleiana: Midsummer 1918 This is the twelfth issue of Acta since the outbreak of the war, and probably in every one, the hope of peace before the next number has been foremost in our minds. Now, after forty-seven months of it, we are not thinking quite so much of an early peace, but are looking ahead and trying to have things in readiness -if the war should go on for another twelve months. This change in our outlook is most important and will undoubtedly in the end shorten the war materially. We have at last taken a complete census of our able-bodied population; boys and women have come forward to do men's work, and throughout the whole country, there is a much clearer idea of service than ever before in our history. Our own School has not been backward in this effort for greater service, and has responded quickly and generously to every call. The majority have joined the Navy League, and over $500 has been promised to the for Soldiers' Comforts. This latter sum is to be earned during the vacation, and no boy who has promised to give money, may ask his parents for it. He must give of his own, and to do this he must earn the money first. A great many throughout the School have arranged to spend their holidays on farms, and several left School early for this purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Union Labor in Peace and War What will happen in the rest of Europe and in America when the war ceases, when the external pressure is relieved, when the temperature goes down and thirty million men suddenly are thrown back upon their own resources? Thirty million men and their dependents, equivalent to the total population of the United States, are now being fed, clothed and housed by the belligerent governments. Who can imagine the tremendous upheaval resulting from the sudden unemploy ment of almost the entire working population of the United States? England by no means has the largest army, yet England is planning to distribute the process of demobilization over twelve months at least 1n order to forestall chaos and misery. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American War; Facts and Fallacies: A Speech I think I shall not be wrong also in assuming, and in fact in assert ing, that during the last twelve months there has been a vast change in public feeling on the question, and that there is at present much less sympathy felt in this country for the Southern Confederacy than there was; and also that there IS much less confidence felt as to the ultimate success of the rebellion. I have never made any secret of the fact that, from beginning to end, my sympathy has been with the North, during the present struggle - of course I do not mean. That I sympathize with every act of the North, or would attempt to justify all they have done or left undone - but I rejoice in the conviction that the infamous attempt to create a great slave empire has failed, and that for the future the Government of the United States will be in favor of Liberty, and against Slavery. There are two reasons why I have felt so strongly and spoken so earnestly on the subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
