Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to have visual intuition? Can we gain geometrical knowledge by using visual reasoning? And if we can, is it because we have a faculty of intuition? In After Euclid, Jesse Norman reexamines the ancient and long-disregarded concept of visual reasoning and reasserts its potential as a formidable tool in our ability to grasp various kinds of geometrical knowledge. The first detailed philosophical case study of its kind, this text is essential reading for scholars in the fields of mathematics and philosophy.

Book Form and Clarity in Euclid s Elements

Download or read book Form and Clarity in Euclid s Elements written by Anna-Maria Gasser and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-07-22 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As of yet, the remarkable and highly influential textual form of Euclidean mathematics has not been considered from a literary-aesthetic perspective. By its extreme standardization and seeming non-literariness it appears to defy such an approach. This book nonetheless attempts precisely a literary-aesthetic study of the language and style of Euclid’s Elements, focusing on book I. It aims to find out what is literary about the form and what motivates this form as form. In doing so, it employs the concept of clarity, asking: How is the textual form related to logical and communicative clarity? That is, how far is the omnipresent standardization necessary for the accomplishment and successful communication of the proofs? Based on a close analysis of the standardization at all levels of the text (lexicon, grammar, structure, and especially diagram), it argues that the textual form of the Elements is standardized beyond logical-communicative purposes, and that it is in this sense ‘aesthetic’. The book exposes the unexpected literary dimension of Euclid’s Elements, provides a new interpretation of the peculiar form of the work, and offers a model for determining the role of clarity (not only) in Greek theoretical mathematics.

Book The Arabic Version of Euclid s Optics

Download or read book The Arabic Version of Euclid s Optics written by Elaheh Kheirandish and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like all classical Greek texts on science, Euclid's works on optics initially came to the West mainly through medieval Arabic texts and commentaries. While several Greek versions of the Optika were discovered and translated as early as the sixteenth century, sorting out what may have been Euclid's original has not been easy. This book presents a critical translation of an Arabic texts and of Arabic commentaries on the text, and places the whole in a historical context. The Optics is particularly interesting in that Euclid's text was considerably transformed in the process of translation into Arabic "equivalents"; in addition, several of the Arabic editions of Euclid's text (c. 300 BC) contained liberal admixtures of a much later book by Ptolemy (c. 200 AD) of the same title. What was referred to as "Euclid's Optics," the "Kitab Uqlidis fi Ikhtilaf al-manazir," thus became as much an exposition of an Arabic version of a visual theory as a translation of Euclid's ideas on the subject. In preparing this edition, Dr. Kheirandish has thus not only sorted out the various manuscript versions of Al-Manazir, but also related and unrelated texts that were often confused with it.

As a result, he became known as the father of geometry. Euclid founded his own school in Alexandria, Egypt, and gained a reputation as an exceptional geometry teacher. The Elements, his thirteen-volume treatise on mathematics and geometry, was considered to be one of the most influential mathematical works in history. Readers consider some of the definitions and postulates from this great work. They also learn about ancient Greek civilization and the renowned Greek mathematicians and philosophers who influenced Euclid's thinking.

Book Euclid s Phaenomena

Download or read book Euclid s Phaenomena written by J. L. Berggren and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-29 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1996, this book contains a translation and study of Euclid's Phaenomena, a work which once formed part of the mathematical training of astronomers from Central Asia to Western Europe. Included is an introduction that sets Euclid's geometry of the celestial sphere, and its application to the astronomy of his day, into its historical context for readers not already familiar with it. So no knowledge of astronomy or advanced mathematics is necessary for an understanding of the work. The book shows mathematical astronomy shortly before the invention of trigonometry, which allowed the calculation of exact results and the subsequent composition of Ptolemy's Almagest. This work and the (roughly) contemporaneous treatises of Autolycus and Aristarchos form a corpus of the oldest extant works on mathematical astronomy. Together with Euclid's Optics one has the beginnings of the history of science as an application of mathematics.

Book Euclid in Greek Volume 1

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas L. Heath
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2011-02-17
  • ISBN : 0521183472
  • Pages : 251 pages

Download or read book Euclid in Greek Volume 1 written by Thomas L. Heath and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-17 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1920, this volume contains book one of Euclid's Elements in Greek, together with an introduction and notes section written in English. It was created to provide young students with a contextual understanding of geometry and the development of geometrical principles, one which was increasingly neglected in the standard school textbooks of the time. By returning to the Elements in their original form it was hoped that students would gain a fundamental understanding of the ideas put forward in the text, one which would increase their knowledge and enthusiasm. It was also hoped that the dual process of learning Greek and geometry would be an effective way of impressing content on the mind of the learner. This volume will be of value to anyone with an interest in geometry and the development of pedagogy.

Book The Commentary of al Nayrizi on Books II IV of Euclid s Elements of Geometry

Download or read book The Commentary of al Nayrizi on Books II IV of Euclid s Elements of Geometry written by Anthony Lo Bello and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-04-24 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Commentary of al-Nayrizi (circa 920) on Euclid’s Elements of Geometry occupies an important place both in the history of mathematics and of philosophy, particularly Islamic philosophy. It is a compilation of original work by al-Nayrizi and of translations and commentaries made by others, such as Heron. It is the most influential Arabic mathematical manuscript in existence and a principle vehicle whereby mathematics was reborn in the Latin West. Furthermore, the Commentary on Euclid by the Platonic philosopher Simplicius, entirely reproduced by al-Nayrizi, and nowhere else extant, is essential to the study of the attempt to prove Euclid’s Fifth Postulate from the preceding four. Al-Nayrizi was one of the two main sources from which Albertus Magnus (1193-1280), the Doctor Universalis, learned mathematics. This work presents an annotated English translation of Books II-IV and of a hitherto lost portion of Book I.
