Book After Darwin Animals Emotions and the Mind

Download or read book After Darwin Animals Emotions and the Mind written by Angelique Richardson and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2013-11-10 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘What is emotion?’ pondered the young Charles Darwin in his notebooks. How were the emotions to be placed in an evolutionary framework? And what light might they shed on human-animal continuities? These were among the questions Darwin explored in his research, assisted both by an acute sense of observation and an extraordinary capacity for fellow feeling, not only with humans but with all animal life. After Darwin: Animals, Emotions, and the Mind explores questions of mind, emotion and the moral sense which Darwin opened up through his research on the physical expression of emotions and the human–animal relation. It also examines the extent to which Darwin’s ideas were taken up by Victorian writers and popular culture, from George Eliot to the Daily News. Bringing together scholars from biology, literature, history, psychology, psychiatry and paediatrics, the volume provides an invaluable reassessment of Darwin’s contribution to a new understanding of the moral sense and emotional life, and considers the urgent scientific and ethical implications of his ideas today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals is Charles Darwin's major work of evolutionary theory. The book concerns the biological aspects of emotional life, and Darwin explores the animal origins of such human characteristics as the lifting of the eyebrows in moments of surprise and the mental confusion which typically accompanies blushing. Darwin's biological approach links emotions to their origins in animal behavior, and allows cultural factors only an auxiliary role in the shaping of expression. This biological emphasis leads to a concentration on six emotional states: happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise and disgust. It also leads to an appreciation of the universal nature of expression, with its implication of a single origin for the entire human species; and Darwin points to the importance of emotional communication with children in their psychological development.

Book excerpt: The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals by Charles Darwin The expression of emotions in man and animals is the third major work in the evolutionary theory of Charles Darwin, after the origin of species (1859) and The origin of man (1871). Initially conceived as a chapter in The Descent of Man, The Expression grew in length and was published separately in 1872. This book deals with the biological aspects of emotional life, and Darwin explores the animal origins of human characteristics such as the rising of the eyebrows in moments of surprise and mental confusion that typically accompanies blush. A German translation of The Expression appeared in 1872; The Dutch and French versions followed in 1873 and 1874. A second edition of the book, with only minor modifications, was published in 1890. Since its first publication, The Expression has never been out of print, but has also been described as Darwin's "masterpiece. forgotten ". Before Darwin, human emotional life had posed problems for the Western philosophical categories of mind and body. Darwin's interest dates back to his time as a medical student and Sir Charles Bell's 1824 edition of Anatomy and Philosophy of Expression, which advocated a spiritual dimension to the subject. In contrast, Darwin's biological approach links emotions to their origins in animal behavior and allows cultural factors to play only an auxiliary role in shaping expression. This biological emphasis leads to a concentration on six emotional states: happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, and disgust. It also leads to an appreciation of the universal character of the expression, with its implication of a single origin for the entire human species; and Darwin points out the importance of emotional communication with children in their psychological development. Darwin sought the opinions of some of the leading British psychiatrists, notably James Crichton-Browne, in preparing the book which constitutes his main contribution to psychology. Among the innovations of this book is the distribution of a questionnaire by Darwin (probably inspired by his cousin, Francis Galton) during his preparatory research; simple psychology experiments on emotion recognition with his friends and family; and (borrowing from Duchenne de Boulogne, physician de la Salpêtrière) the use of photography in his presentation of scientific information. Publisher John Murray warned Darwin that including the photographs would "put a hole in the profit" of the book, and Expression of Emotions is an important milestone in the history of book illustration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animals were vital to the British colonization of Myanmar. In this pathbreaking history of British imperialism in Myanmar from the early nineteenth century to 1942, Jonathan Saha argues that animals were impacted and transformed by colonial subjugation. By examining the writings of Burmese nationalists and the experiences of subaltern groups, he also shows how animals were mobilized by Burmese anticolonial activists in opposition to imperial rule. In demonstrating how animals - such as elephants, crocodiles, and rats - were important actors never fully under the control of humans, Saha uncovers a history of how British colonialism transformed ecologies and fostered new relationships with animals in Myanmar. Colonizing Animals introduces the reader to an innovative historical methodology for exploring interspecies relationships in the imperial past, using innovative concepts for studying interspecies empires that draw on postcolonial theory and critical animal studies.

All of Darwin's writings drew on information gleaned from a worldwide network of scientific research and correspondence, but they hinge on moments in which Darwin asks his reader to imagine how specific patterns came to be over time, spinning yarns filled with protagonists and antagonists, crises, triumphs, and tragedies. His fictions also forged striking new possibilities for the interpretation of human societies and their relation to natural environments. This volume gathers an international roster of scholars to ask what Darwin's writing offers future of literary scholarship and critical theory, as well as allied fields like history, art history, philosophy, gender studies, disability studies, the history of race, aesthetics, and ethics. It speaks to anyone interested in the impact of Darwin on the humanities, including literary scholars, undergraduate and graduate students, and general readers interested in Darwin's continuing influence.

Book Inside Animal Hearts and Minds

Download or read book Inside Animal Hearts and Minds written by Belinda Recio and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Charles Darwin suggested more than a century ago, the differences between animals and humans are “of degree and not of kind.” Not long ago, ethologists denied that animals had emotions or true intelligence. Now, we know that rats laugh when tickled, magpies mourn as they cover the departed with greenery, female whales travel thousands of miles for annual reunions with their gal pals, seals navigate by the stars, bears hum when happy, and crows slide down snowy rooftops for fun. In engaging text, photographs, and infographics, Inside Animal Hearts and Minds showcases fascinating and heart-warming examples of animal emotion and cognition that will foster wonder and empathy. Learn about an orangutan who does “macramé,” monkeys that understand the concept of money, and rats that choose friendship over food. Even language, math, and logic are no longer exclusive to humans. Prairie dogs have their own complex vocabularies to describe human intruders, parrots name their chicks, sea lions appear capable of deductive thinking akin to a ten-year-old child’s, and bears, lemurs, parrots, and other animals demonstrate numerical cognition. In a world where a growing body of scientific research is closing the gap between the human and non-human, Inside Animal Hearts and Minds invites us to change the way we view animals, the world, and our place in it.
