This book was released on 1988 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Air Force Astronautics Laboratory (AFAL) is the principal AFSC organization charged with planning and executing USAF research, exploratory and advanced development programs for interdisciplinary space technology and rocket propulsion. Space technology includes spacecraft technology, launch vehicle technology, launch and in-space operations, and logistics technology. Rocket propulsion includes propellants, combustion, plume phenomenology, rocket propulsion materials and structures, solid propellant, rocket motors, liquid propellant rocket feed systems and engines, electric propulsion, hazard phenomena and assessment, and rocket test techniques and instrumentation. There are two parts to the AFAL mission - first to develop new technology for the Air Force missiles and space systems of the future; and second to provide technical support to other organizations within the Air Force, that produce the end items. This report summarizes the technical objectives and approaches for research, exploratory development, and advanced development efforts being pursued, and to be pursued, at the AFSL between FY 89-93. Keywords: Technology forecasting, Defense planning, Air Force research, Astronautics, Space propulsion systems, Air launched missile propulsion, Ballistic missile rocket propulsion. (edc).

Book excerpt: The AIR FORCE ROCKET PROPULSION LABORATORY HISTORY, The Organization, the History and the People is Edited By Robert L. Geisler and Written in Three Parts by the AFRPL Alumni Group. In its four-plus decades of service, the AFRPL located at Edwards AFB California was the source and focal point for much of the advanced rocket propulsion technology for the United States Air Force and the propulsion community at-large. The lab produced over 5,000 proud rocket scientists and technicians. It was the only facility in the country whose exploratory development program spanned the spectrum of propulsion system applications including Tactical Rockets, Ballistic Missiles, Space Propulsion, and related multiple application technologies such as chemistry, materials, structures, combustion, plume phenomenology, and hazards. It has provided unique and valuable in-house capabilities and facilities, which have greatly altered the course of events of rocket propulsion. It has made the Air Force an intelligent buyer and user of rocket technology upon which the security of the nation has relied and the story is worth telling!
