  • Publisher : AFRICAN SUN MeDIA
  • Release : 2019-07-31
  • ISBN : 1928357695
  • Pages : 204 pages

Download or read book Plate en Politiek written by S.D. van der Merwe and published by AFRICAN SUN MeDIA. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Finding Afrikaans

Download or read book Finding Afrikaans written by Christo van Rensburg and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new book on Afrikaans's African origins Finding Afrikaans, a brand-new book by Christo van Rensburg, is now available. Where did Afrikaans begin? Who spoke Afrikaans first? Was the Cape really Dutch? How did the Khoi and the Portuguese trade with each other? What role did slaves play in the origin of Afrikaans? What is the influence of townships in Afrikaans? How did the various treks into the heart of the country affect Afrikaans? The language contact that had followed, even the fear of language contact, is one of Afrikaans's important stories. Writing in the Afrikaans language began in different, and interesting, ways, with strong influences from the Islam. Afrikaans's standardisation is the source of many different and divergent stories. Finding Afrikaans is also available in Afrikaans as Van Afrikaans gepraat. These books were made possible by a generous donation from the Afrikaanse Taalraad (ATR). They coproduced by Malan Media and LAPA Publishers. LAPA will be marketing and distributing the books. Dr. Willa Boezak said about Van Rensburg’s previous book: "It had changed my life. It had turned me into a language activist. " The ATR, the Afrikaans Language Museum and Monument and the Heritage Foundation are joining forces to market the books. These books will also feature regularly at language seminars run by the ATKV and DAK. In the Netherlands there is a huge great interest in the book, and this English translation has created an interest among sociologists from different continents.

Book Dutch

    Book Details:
  • Author : Roland Willemyns
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2013-03-15
  • ISBN : 0199323666
  • Pages : 312 pages

Download or read book Dutch written by Roland Willemyns and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 22 million people speak Dutch-primarily in the Netherlands, Belgium, Suriname, and the Antilles. Roland Willemyns here offers a well-researched and highly readable survey of the Dutch language in all its historical, geographic, and social aspects. Willemyns tells a story of language contact and conflict. From its earliest days, Dutch has been in intense contact with other languages both within and outside the borders of the Low Countries, particularly with French, Frisian, and German. The first part of Dutch concentrates on the historical development of standard Dutch and its dialects. The second part focuses on contemporary Dutch, including its many dialects in Flanders and Holland (some of them on the verge of extinction). Willemyns pays special attention to important questions in the history of Dutch, particularly the contentious matter of the global spread of Dutch through colonization-which led to "exotic" variations such as Afrikaans, pidgins, and creoles-and whether Dutchmen and Flemings are "separated by the same language." His final chapter tries to shed some light on the future of Dutch, and the impact of such "new" varieties as Poldernederlands (in Holland) and Verkavelingsvlaams (in Flanders). Placing the Dutch story in the context of other West-Germanic languages like German and English, Dutch: Biography of a Language is the only English language history of Dutch and will be sure to interest a global audience of students of Dutch, those of Dutch descent, and linguists and other scholars wishing to learn more about Dutch.

Book Germanic Standardizations

Download or read book Germanic Standardizations written by Ana Deumert and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a comparative, socio-historical study of the Germanic standard languages (Afrikaans, Danish, Dutch, English, Faroese, Frisian, German, Icelandic, Low German, Luxemburgish, Norwegian, Scots, Swedish, Yiddish as well as the Caribbean and Pacific Creole languages). Each of the 16 orginal chapters systematically discusses central aspects of the standardization process, including dialect selection, codification, elaboration and diffusion of the standard norm across the speech community, as well as incipient processes of de-standardization and re-standardization. The strongly comparative orientation of the contributions allow for the identification of broad similarities as well as intriguing differences across a wide range of historically and socially diverse language histories. Two chapters by the editors provide an overview of the theoretical background and rationale of comparative standardization research, and outline directions for further research in the area. The volume will be of interest to language historians as well as sociolinguists in general.
