Ich hatte gerade im Wintersemester 2005/2006 an der Universität Hamburg mein letztes Semester als Professor für Politische Wissenschaft mit dem Schwerpunkt Internationale Beziehungen/Entwicklungspolitik/Dritte Welt verbracht und war nun als Emeritus „frei“, das verlockende Angebot des Dekans der Geschichts- und Gesellschaftswissenschaftlichen Fakultät, Prof. Dr. Joachim Detjen, und des Kollegen Klaus Schubert anzunehmen. Das habe ich wahrlich nicht bereut. So habe ich dann vor interessierten Studierenden zwischen April und Juli 2006 im schönen Barockstädtchen Eichstätt eine Vorlesung zum Thema „Afrika in Geschichte und Gegenwart“ gehalten sowie ein Hauptseminar über „Entwi- lungspolitik im Zeitalter der Globalisierung“ durchgeführt. Im Juni und Juli 2006 habe ich vertragsgemäß die beiden öffentlichen Vorträge vor der Fakultät gehalten – nur marginal durch die Übertragung der Länderspiele im Rahmen der Fußballweltmeisterschaft abgelenkt. Die beiden Vorträge bildeten thematisch eine Einheit, weil die Dynamik der Globalisierung der gemeinsame aktuelle Ausgangspunkt für eine Art politische Ortsbestimmung unter besonderer - rücksichtigung kultureller Aspekte bildete. Während der erste Vortrag unter der Überschrift „Globalisierung – Segen oder Fluch? Afrika – Verlierer der Globa- sierung?“ firmierte, behandelte der zweite „die kulturelle Globalisierung“. - mit sollten die Herausforderungen der primär wirtschaftlich und technis- wissenschaftlichen Globalisierungsprozesse für die kulturellen Sinn- und Ori- tierungssysteme der Staaten zum Gegenstand dersozialwissenschaftlichen - flexion gemacht werden.

Apart from renowned German economists, some well-known international academics participated in the 1998 Berlin symposium, to learn from experience in other countries.The first chapter contains the main standard textbook models and paradigms explaining lasting high unemployment. The question in the second chapter is if it is possible to fight unemployment with the help of macro policy on a purely national basis in the presence of global markets. The third chapter indicates possible effects of misalignments in financial markets on economic growth and employment. The contributions of the fourth chapter present experiences of other countries, which have succeeded in recent years in lowering their unemployment rates. The question at issue is, if these concepts can be transferred to Germany. The topics of the concluding chapter are practical macroeconomic starting points for sustainable employment growth in Europe. The methods contradict supply side arguments for the stabilisation of employment predominant in the German discussion. Attention is focused on relations between the role of monetary and fiscal policy in close conjunction with wage policy. Furthermore it is made evident that in global markets a theoretical macroeconomic concept as a base for sustainable employment is not very promising without enhanced international co-operation. It was a joint event, namely the biennial meeting of the Scandinavian Society of Forest Economics and the 3rd Berkeley-KVL Con ference. The Scandinavian Society of Forest Economics (SSFE) was established in 1958 as a forum for forest economists in the Nordic countries to meet and exchange ideas on research and education. Alternating between Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, biennial ordinary meetings have taken place ever since. The number of participants has increased from 10-15 in the first decade to more than 80 in 2002. In the last two decades prominent researchers from outside Scandinavia have been invited to present papers at the biennial meetings and also to participate in ad hoc working groups. The Berkeley-KVL part of the conference is based on a research collaboration between The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University (KVL), Copenhagen, University of Cali fornia at Berkeley, and Oregon State University. It was initiated in 1993 within the frame work of a research programme at KVL: 'Stochastic Decision Analysis in Forest Manage ment' and since 1996 extended to the programme 'Economic Optimisation of Multiple-Use Forestry and Other Natural Resources'.

An enchanted Christian sees his glorious destiny threatened by witches, marine spirits, spirit spouses, and ancestral curses. Churches catering for this worldview lay bare the workings of this spirit world, deliver those suffering from spirit attacks, and equip members to combat these forces. This enchanted imagination, along with the prosperity gospel, and emphasis on the pastor's 'anointing', are the principal characteristics of much African Pentecostalism. Gifford argues that the enchanted religious imagination militates against development by encouraging fear and distrust.

The politically active Base Ecclesial Communities and the progressive posture of the Roman Catholic Church contrasted with a steadily growing number of evangelicals, mostly aligned with the military regime but attractive precisely to the poor. After democratic transition in the mid-1980s, the context changed considerably. Democracy, growing religious pluralism and mobility, a vibrant civil society, the political ascension of the Worker's Party and growing wealth, albeit within a continuously wide social gap, are some of the elements that show the need of a new approach to theology. It must be a theology that is both critical and constructive, resisting and cooperative, a theology that is able to give orientation to the churches, valuing and encouraging their contribution in society while avoiding attempts of imposition. The Churches and Democracy in Brazil, the fruit of years of interdisciplinary study of the Brazilian context and its main churches and theology, makes its case for an ecumenically articulated public theology. It seeks inspiration mainly in Luther and Lutheran theology, emphasizing human dignity, freedom, trust, the disposition to serve, and the ability to endure the ambiguities of reality, as well as a fresh interpretation of the doctrine of the two regiments. These are the fundamental elements of what makes human beings full members of the body politic: citizenship, their right to have rights and to be able to effectively live them, together with their corresponding duties, in a move of growing political participation conscious of their religious motivation in view of the commonweal.
