Download or read book Music Traditions Change and Creativity in Africa written by Giorgio Adamo and published by NeoClassica. This book was released on 2019 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 2014 an international seminar on musical dynamics and creativity in Africa was held at Tor Vergata University of Rome. The topic and the approach were strongly influenced by issues that Gerhard Kubik believed should have been addressed for a long time, such as the attention to cultural and social dynamics, with a specific emphasis on the creativity of individuals. Beside his keynote address, Music Traditions, Change and Creativity in Africa includes the contributions presented by scholars from different countries, particularly active in the East African area and in dialogue with Italian researchers who have field experience in the same region. Music Traditions, Change and Creativity in Africa is the first monograph of a series of volumes connected and inspired to the journal Etnografie Sonore / Sound Ethnographies (www.soundethnographies.it), which Giorgio Adamo and his colleagues recently founded. Along with the papers multimedia contents are also available online.

Download or read book Transfers of Belonging written by Erdmute Alber and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Transfers of Belonging, Erdmute Alber traces the history of child fostering in northern Benin from the pre-colonial past to the present by pointing out the embeddedness of child foster practices and norms in a wider political process of change. Child fostering was, for a long time, not just one way of raising children, but seen as the appropriate way of doing so. This changed profoundly with the arrival of European ideas about birth parents being the ‘right’ parents, but also with the introduction of schooling and the differentiation of life chances. Besides providing deep historical and ethnographical insights, Transfers of Belonging offers a new theoretical frame for conceptualizing parenting.

Download or read book Globalization and Transformations of Local Socioeconomic Practices written by Ulrike Schuerkens and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-04-18 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative volume provides a comprehensive overview of the transformation of socio-economic practices in the global economy. The contributors offer analytical and comparative insights at the world level, with regard to the current socio-economic practices as well as an assessment of the overall economic globalization phenomenon in the global world. Through empirical case studies of different civilizations or cultures that describe situations of intertwining of local socio-economic practices and global economic modernity, this volume assesses the overall situation in the world, looking at the world as an economic system where some countries act as winners, others as losers and some as both winners and losers of economic globalization. This exceptional book will appeal to sociologists, social and cultural anthropologists, and economists interested in development.

Download or read book Housing as Governance written by Astrid Ley and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2010 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the dynamic roles and linkages of public sector institutions and civil society actors in housing provision for the urban poor in South Africa. Based on actor-centred and network theories, two cases of civil society alliances are analysed. The book reveals that existing civil society structures are hybrids that can oscillate between networks and organisations. Moreover, they establish informal governance spaces with state actors outside the institutional channels provided by government. The emergence of oscillating structures and the informalisation of horizontal governance represent new challenges for local decision-making processes. Co-operation and action-oriented approaches in housing seemingly need to be based on a more detailed understanding of the complex interfaces, which go far beyond the conventional ideal of partnerships and participation between sectors.
Download or read book Negotiating the Boundary written by Matthias Mohr and published by Lit Verlag. This book was released on 1997 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until 1994, the year South Africa experienced her first democratic elections, the country was notorious for its ruthless apartheid policy and its violent political climate. By then, the antagonism between the recently unbanned black political parties had reached its pathetic peak. Among those who had to bear the impact of intimidation, violence and murder were the Zulu Zionists. Being part of the African Independent Churches, Zulu Zionists have always been apolitical and against any form of violence. Yet, how were they able to uphold their religious principals and ideals in a time where being impartial meant to sympathise with the political adversary? During 22 months of fieldwork, the author observed how Zulu Zionists in the township of Kwa Mashu, Durban, "walked the tightrope" in order to maintain their identity as apolitical and peace loving christians. This thesis is an excellent account based upon able, meticulous and very difficult field research and upon deep scholarly knowledge.
