Book Behavioral Science in the Wild

Download or read book Behavioral Science in the Wild written by Nina Mažar and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2022-04-27 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behavioral Science in the Wild helps managers understand how best to incorporate key research findings to solve their own behavior change challenges in the real world – from lab to field. Behavioral Science in the Wild helps managers to implement research findings on behavioral change in their own workplace operations and to apply them to business or policy problems. As the second book in the Behaviourally Informed Organizations series, Behavioral Science in the Wild takes a step back to address the "why" and "how" behind the origins of behavioral insights, and how best to translate and scale behavioral science from lab-based research findings. Governments, for-profit enterprises, and welfare organizations have increasingly started relying on findings from the behavioral sciences to develop more accessible and user-friendly products, processes, and experiences for their end-users. While there is a burgeoning science that helps us to understand why people act and make the decisions that they do, and how their actions can be influenced, we still lack a precise science and strategic insights into how some key theoretical findings can be successfully translated, scaled, and applied in the field. Nina Mažar and Dilip Soman are joined by leading figures from both the academic and applied behavioral sciences to develop a nuanced framework for how managers can best translate results from pilot studies into their own organizations and behavior change challenges using behavioral science.

This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The volume reflects basic as well as applied well-being research in the multicultural South African context, as conducted in various contexts and with a variety of methods and foci. Theoretical, review, and empirical research contributions are made, reflecting positivist to constructivist approaches, and include quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method approaches. Some findings support universality assumptions, but others uncovered unique cultural patterns. Chapters report on well-being research conducted in the domains of education, work, health, and family, and in clinical, urban vs. rural, and unicultural vs. multicultural contexts. Studies span the well-being of adolescents, adults, and older people, and topics include resilience in individuals, families, and groups, measurement issues and coping processes, the role of personal and contextual variables, and facets such as hope, spirituality, self-regulation, and interventions.

Book Socio political and Psychological Perspectives on South Africa

Download or read book Socio political and Psychological Perspectives on South Africa written by Christopher R. Stones and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Africa is a society that, sadly, has been divided against itself even at the best of times. Beginning with the initial advent of colonialism on the southern tip of the African continent, through to the later spawning of apartheid as well as in its nascent democracy, divisions have continually been manifest in varying form and content, along racial, ethnic, class, religious, language, political or other socio-economic and cultural lines. Unlike most societies, South Africa is a natural laboratory for psycho-social research yet it has been foreign researchers who have conducted most of the behavioural studies on the human condition in the country. South African psychologists seem to have steered clear of involvement in researching any major policy impact, especially in recent times when the re-shaping of South African society has been at its height. Each of the authors in this book is South African and, appropriately, has lived through the transition in South Africa and has attempted to understand the changes at both professional and personal levels. The contributors were each asked to write a chapter that would explore the South African socio-political terrain from within their fields of expertise and so help others navigate the uncharted future with less trepidation.'

Book A Philosophy for the Science of Animal Consciousness

Download or read book A Philosophy for the Science of Animal Consciousness written by Walter Veit and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-16 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to advance Donald Griffin's vision of the "final, crowning chapter of the Darwinian revolution" by developing a philosophy for the science of animal consciousness. It advocates a Darwinian bottom-up approach that treats consciousness as a complex, evolved, and multidimensional phenomenon in nature rather than a mysterious all-or-nothing property immune to the tools of science and restricted to a single species. The so-called emergence of a science of consciousness in the 1990s has at best been a science of human consciousness. This book aims to advance a true Darwinian science of consciousness in which its evolutionary origin, function, and phylogenetic diversity are moved from the field’s periphery to its very centre, thus enabling us to integrate consciousness into an evolutionary view of life. Accordingly, this book has two objectives: (i) to argue for the need and possibility of an evolutionary bottom-up approach that addresses the problem of consciousness in terms of the evolutionary origins of a new ecological lifestyle that made consciousness worth having and (ii) to articulate a thesis and beginnings of a theory of the place of consciousness as a complex evolved phenomenon in nature that can help us to answer the question of what it is like to be a bat, an octopus, or a crow. A Philosophy for the Science of Animal Consciousness will appeal to researchers and advanced students interested in advancing our understanding of animal minds as well as anyone with a keen interest in how we can develop a science of animal consciousness.
