His research specialty is African history, and African politics. He is the author and co-editor of five books and several scholarly articles in international journals and edited volumes. His most recent awards include: University of Louisville Distinguished Research Award, and Victor Olurunsola Endowed Research Award. He is the founding Editor of Notes and Records: an International Journal of African and African Diaspora Studies. "
