This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informed by the memories of African nurses, this book highlights the experiences of men and women who provided nursing services in Zimbabwe’s hospitals in the twentieth–century. It argues that in their subordinate positions, and within their various capacities – nursing assistants, nursing orderlies, medics and qualified nurses - African women and men played a pivotal role in the provision of healthcare services to their fellow Africans. They transformed hospital spaces into their own, reshaped and reformulated indigenous as well as western nursing and biomedical practices. Through their work, African nurses contributed to the development of the nation by being at the bedside, healing the sick and nursing the infirm.

Book Blending Cultures Identities in Transition

Download or read book Blending Cultures Identities in Transition written by Kathy T. Morris and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract:This study is an inquiry into the challenges faced by African born international nursing students at a university in southeast Georgia. The barriers to success that must be overcome by international students in the U.S.A. are well documented, and previous studies have shown that the barriers are even greater for students from Africa than for other international students, due to the vast differences between their cultural backgrounds and American culture. When the international students are also Black, as are the participants in this study, they may also face racial discrimination and prejudice in addition to the numerous other barriers to their success. This study seeks to understand and construct meaning from the lived experiences of African-born international students at a majority White university in Southeast Georgia. By giving voice to the participants and presenting the results in their own words, this study provides insight into the barriers to success that they face, and includes their feedback about potential strategies to increase their chances for success. This inquiry is centered on understanding the reasons that many African-born international nursing students struggle to be successful in the nursing program under study in southeast Georgia, and the barriers that impact their ability to be successful once they are admitted. It also explores the effects of their own past cultural experience on their ability to adapt to the curriculum and be successful in the nursing program, and how the cultural influence of the study setting affects the transitional process of the study participants.

Book Epidemics and the Health of African Nations

Download or read book Epidemics and the Health of African Nations written by MISTRA MISTRA and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: News footage of disease in Africa is a familiar sight. Yet these outbreaks are often presented out of context, with no reference to the conditions that have triggered them. MISTRAs new book, Epidemics and the Health of African Nations, aims to redress that. Researchers and practitioners from within the continent explore why Africa is so vulnerable to disease, and show how this vulnerability is closely linked to political and economic factors. They demonstrate how these same factors determine the way epidemics are treated. Authors extract lessons from case studies in different parts of Africa; challenge conventional frameworks about disease to argue for a syndemics approach that takes into account the interrelationship between disease and political and socio-economic contexts; explore challenges of Africas future. They argue that a well-functioning health system is at the core of a countrys capacity to counter an epidemic. This volume brings African experts together to probe possible solutions to the continents heavy burden of disease. The insights offered will be helpful in devising policy for the control of disease and the combatting of epidemics in Africa.
