Book excerpt: Riding in Africa captures the escapades of more than twelve journeys to Africa. Author Ian Williams offers sage-if somewhat tongue-in-cheek-advice on how to get from one end of an African horse safari to the other without killing yourself. Read about African flora and fauna, evolution, history, language, the eccentricities of human character, and above all, the perspectives of a scientist-adventurer who puts himself on life's edge. Williams tells of succumbing to pneumonia in the foothills of Mount Kenya, his experiences in a small African cottage hospital and later in the Nairobi Hospital, part of which he spends in morphine-induced delirium and part in the hospital room reserved for former Kenyan strong man, Daniel arap Moi. Williams also shares stories of adventures with horses and people while riding through the savannahs of Kenya, the mountains of Malawi, the swamps of Botswana, the deserts of Namibia, and the Lapalala Wilderness, home to the fearsome black rhino. Riding in Africa is about middle passages: the leap from one side of fifty to the other and the fine line between life and death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This inspiring book tells the story of a photographer's journey to find the mysterious black leopard. There are few creatures as gorgeous and elusive as the black leopard. In Africa, these magnificent cats are so rare as to be the stuff of legend. Will Burrard-Lucas's love for leopards began during his childhood in Tanzania and propelled him into a career as a wildlife photographer. In his quest to create intimate portraits of animals, he developed innovative technology, including a remotely controlled camera buggy and a high quality camera trap system for photographing nocturnal creatures. Then, one day in 2018, he heard about sightings of a young African black leopard in Kenya and with the help of people from the local community, he succeeded in capturing a series of high-quality photographs of the elusive cat. In this compelling and visually stunning book, Burrard-Lucas tells his story of creativity, entrepreneurship, and passion for wild animals, alongside awe-inspiring images of lions, elephants, and the black leopard itself. • STAR WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER: Will Burrard-Lucas's passion for nature and expertise in camera technology have earned him coverage from National Geographic, The New York Times, and the BBC—and over 1 million fans enjoy his breathtaking work online. • NATURE'S HIDDEN WONDERS: Black leopards are individual animals in whom a gene mutation results in excess melanin and an elegant black coat. Most are found in Southeast Asia, where lush vegetation offers them camouflage. In the semiarid shrub lands of Africa, black leopards are extraordinarily rare. Burrard-Lucas's images—showing these beautiful creatures prowling their territory under cover of night—are vivid reminders of nature's hidden wonders. • INCREDIBLE STORY: This is an adventure story that takes place in remote and wild corners of Africa. It reveals Burrard-Lucas's devotion, vision, and innovation that led to him capturing photos that are not only incredibly rare, but also breathtakingly beautiful. Perfect for: • Aspiring and professional photographers • Photography buffs • Nature and animal lovers • Big cat enthusiasts • Conservationists • National Geographic readers • Fans of memoir and adventure stories • Travelers to Eastern and Southern Africa

Book African Sorceress

  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2020-02-12
  • ISBN : 179600975X
  • Pages : 285 pages

Download or read book African Sorceress written by M.E. Skeel and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-02-12 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Sorceress: War on the Sahel, is one woman’s fight against the evil Atlantic slave trade. It is based on an oral tradition story the author heard in Africa. It takes place in the 1600s in what is now Ghana. The heroine is Kisa, who we first meet in African Sorceress: A Warrior is Forged. Her village is raided by slave traders who sell their captives to the Dutch slave masters in the infamous Elmina slave castle. Kisa trains to be a sorceress and a warrior and lead her people to victory against the slavers. In War on the Sahel, Kisa and her lover Kojo take the war beyond their village. They infiltrate the slave castle, lead a mutiny on a slave ship, take a Portuguese trading fort and build an army to fight the African slave traders who are supplying the Europeans. The action is fast-paced, the story is credible, exciting and imaginative and it’s a great way to learn a largely untold history. The story is heroic fantasy but wrapped within the fantasy are the facts of 17th century Africa and the damage the slave trade caused to the proud independent peoples represented in Kisa’s Army. We meet the tribes that make up her army of freed captives, representing many distinct cultures, languages, customs and spiritual traditions. These oral traditions were just as deep, rich and complex as those of cultures with written languages. What reviewers said about African Sorceress: A Warrior is Forged - “Skeel has done a fantastic job taking on such a huge and largely hidden topic.” - “A really original story, unlike anything I've read before. A lot of research must have gone into this book to weave so many threads of history, anthropology, and geography into the tale. Read it for fun or read it to learn about a part of history most of us have never heard of -- either way you'll enjoy it.” - “Skeel immerses you into the world of the Atlantic slave trade from a perspective that is rarely--if ever--told. Skeel masterfully balances being as informative as any historian while being as entertaining as the best storytellers”

Book Beneath the Black Sun of Cabinda

Download or read book Beneath the Black Sun of Cabinda written by Vanessa Everson and published by AFRICAN SUN MeDIA. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story opens at a time when Cabinda - a small African enclave surrounded by the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and separated from Angola by the Congo River - is plunged into bloody war. Deep in the heart of Cabinda is the Mayombe rainforest, home to a group of guerrilla fighters whose very existence is to liberate their land from the terrors perpetrated by the Angolan army. Against that backdrop of massacres and deforestation and written with crusading fervour, this novel is much more than a political tract. It is a powerful story of impossible love: the poignant love of the principled, young doctor Albino for the country lass Maria; the redemptory love which his ailing, ruthless grandfather Santos is surprised to feel as death approaches; and the love of a dispossessed people for the land of their birth. Recommended reading, then, for lovers of African literature, as well as for scholars and adepts of colonial and postcolonial literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guns Over Africa is an affirmation of sport hunting, and in this context, hunting that contributes to the economy of developing countries within the rules of international wildlife conservation and preservation. This does not mean that the hunter cannot enjoy the sport; it’s not all high-minded and only for these obvious commercial and conservation benefits for other than the hunter himself (or herself). For the hunter, trophy mounts and memories resulting from such experiences flash back the challenge, the competition, the failures, the successes, the remorse, and the elation of the hunt. And they make last year, or before, when the animals were taken, seem not so long ago, and make the next hunt seem not so far away. Settings for these safari accounts are Zimbabwe and South Africa.
