Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between stigma, levels of support and sources of strength for adult African American women living with HIV/AIDS in California. Research indicated higher levels of support and sources of strength correlate with lower levels of perceived stigma. The self-report survey was completed by 18 women using a descriptive and quantitative design. Although correlations were not significant at the .05 level, they were in the expected direction. The results indicated the higher levels of family support, friend support, and sources of strength, the lower levels of perceived stigma. Future research in this area could focus on aspects of diversity, including different cultural backgrounds within the African American community, and the impact HIV/AIDS has on the overall family. Implications for social work practice and policy include elevating awareness of effects perceived stigma has on mental health and wellbeing of those living with HIV/AIDS.

Book excerpt: By the end of 2015, over half of all HIV/AIDS cases will be in adults aged 50 and older. One of the fastest growing older adult sub groups afflicted by the HIV epidemic is older African American women. At present, no studies have explored the unique experiences of older African American women who have received an HIV diagnosis at the age 50 and older. A descriptive qualitative study employing constructivist grounded theory methodology was used to gain insights into the experience of African American women diagnosed with HIV at age 50 and older. In taking the constructivist approach, analysis stemmed from shared experiences and relationships with participants. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, audio-recorded and transcribed. A total of 16 interviews were used. Open-ended, non-leading questions and probes were developed from a literature review and community members' suggestions. Coding, mapping, analytic strategy usage, and memoing all assisted in creation of the grounded theory. The results of this study demonstrated how older African American women utilized various strategies to repurpose a legacy, after an HIV diagnosis. The strategies used by the women included re-evaluating perceptions of HIV risk, learning lessons from tumultuous times, and reconciling past and present events. The women's lack of HIV risk perceptions and their provider's failure to assess risky behaviors resulted in delayed HIV testing. After being tested, the women embarked on a journey to resolve newfound issues, and in the process, learned various life lessons. This process allowed the women to make meaning of their HIV diagnosis and set out on a path to self-discovery. The results of this study can shape forthcoming research on the HIV trajectory of older African American women living with HIV/AIDS and at risk for HIV/AIDS.

Book excerpt: Workable Sisterhood is an empirical look at sixteen HIV-positive women who have a history of drug use, conflict with the law, or a history of working in the sex trade. What makes their experience with the HIV/AIDS virus and their political participation different from their counterparts of people with HIV? Michele Tracy Berger argues that it is the influence of a phenomenon she labels "intersectional stigma," a complex process by which women of color, already experiencing race, class, and gender oppression, are also labeled, judged, and given inferior treatment because of their status as drug users, sex workers, and HIV-positive women. The work explores the barriers of stigma in relation to political participation, and demonstrates how stigma can be effectively challenged and redirected. The majority of the women in Berger's book are women of color, in particular African Americans and Latinas. The study elaborates the process by which these women have become conscious of their social position as HIV-positive and politically active as activists, advocates, or helpers. She builds a picture of community-based political participation that challenges popular, medical, and scholarly representations of "crack addicted prostitutes" and HIV-positive women as social problems or victims, rather than as agents of social change. Berger argues that the women's development of a political identity is directly related to a process called "life reconstruction." This process includes substance- abuse treatment, the recognition of gender as a salient factor in their lives, and the use of nontraditional political resources.
