Book Grandmothering While Black

Download or read book Grandmothering While Black written by LaShawnDa L. Pittman and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Grandmothering While Black, sociologist LaShawnDa L. Pittman explores the complex lives of Black grandmothers raising their grandchildren in skipped-generation households (consisting only of grandparents and grandchildren). She prioritizes the voices of Black grandmothers through in-depth interviews and ethnographic research at various sites—doctor's visits, welfare offices, school and day care center appointments, caseworker meetings, and more. Through careful examination, she explores the various forces that compel, constrain, and support Black grandmothers' caregiving. Pittman showcases a fundamental change in the relationship between grandmother and grandchild as grandmothers confront the paradox of fulfilling the social and legal functions of motherhood without the legal rights of the role. Grandmothering While Black illuminates the strategies used by grandmothers to manage their legal marginalization vis-à-vis parents and the state across a range of caregiving arrangements. In doing so, it reveals the overwhelming and painful decisions Black grandmothers must make to ensure the safety and well-being of the next generation.

Book Stressors and Social Support Among African American Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Download or read book Stressors and Social Support Among African American Grandparents Raising Grandchildren written by Dorothea L. Ivey and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A substantial increase in the number of grandparents raising grandchildren occurred over the past three decades and moves across all ethnicities. African American (AA) grandparent caregivers, however, experience the most stress; yet have the fewest resources as compared with other ethnicities. In addition, AA grandchildren are more likely to live with their grandparents than other ethnicities. This study qualitatively explores (1) the stressors and experiences of grandparent caregiving among AA grandparents, (2) the importance of social support, and (3) the impact that grandparent caregiving has on relationships. A criterion sample of 7 AA grandparents (5 grandmothers, 1 great grandmother, and 1 great grandfather) was recruited from a human services agency in South Dallas County, TX. Data were collected through focus group discussions and from previous studies. Themes emerged among the grandparents relating to difficulty with school, lack of energy, and health issues. Due to the high demands of grandparent-headed households, grandmothers were less likely to participate in leisurely activities. Despite the social isolation, half of the grandmothers would prefer to continue raising their grandchildren than to release them to their parents or the child welfare system. Another finding was that all of the grandparent caregivers rely on their church communities for support. These findings suggest the need for more rigorous assessment of stressors and the availability of social support which could lead to the implementation of programs targeting grandparent caregivers in South Dallas County, TX.

Book Amazing Grace

Download or read book Amazing Grace written by Dorothy Smith-Ruiz and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2004-06-30 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intergenerational African families in which the grandmother is the primary caregiver of grandchildren and great-grandchildren are increasing rapidly in American society. Over the past decade, researchers and policy makers have shown considerable concern over the increases in grandparent-maintained households. This concern has stimulated a proliferation of research on grandparent caregiving on a wide range of issues. Among these are the impact of multiple roles on health, reasons for the rapid increase, problems and needs, social structure and extended family relationships, social support, role satisfaction, the impact of the AIDS and crack-cocaine epidemics, and emotional/physical well-being. In spite of social, economic, and health demands faced by African American grandmothers, many of them accept parental responsibility of children who might otherwise become wards of the state. This book is organized to give a broad perspective on social characteristics, health issues, and experiences of African American grandmothers who act in the role of custodial parents to their grandchildren. Ruiz highlights the increase in grandparent caregivers over the past three decades, provides an overview of historical roles of the grandmother in African American families, and shows how the extended family has acted as a social-emotional and financial support in times of need.

Book Custodial Grandparenting

Download or read book Custodial Grandparenting written by Bert Hayslip, Jr., PhD and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 2005-10-12 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book examines variability among custodial grandparent caregivers. It focuses on diversity among grandparent-headed families in domestic and international settings, with over 35 contributors exploring the many factors that contribute to such diversity. It also examines diversity across individual differences, especially those of gender and age, ethnicity and race, and culture. An awareness of their uniqueness is essential to the process of understanding the demands of custodial grandparents' new roles, and in providing appropriate services to them. Whatever the reason, most grandparents raising grandchildren never anticipated that they would parent again. For most, this new role causes significant upheaval in their lives. Problems contributing to stress may include having to give up or reduce hours of work, early retirement, and providing financial and emotional support for their grandchildren. This book is a valuable resource for practitioners and extension educators who work with grandparents raising their grandchildren. It provides a wealth of information and a basis on which national and state-run services can evaluate their current policies and devise funds, services, and programs that will help this growing population successfully raise their grandchildren.

Book The Jewels of the Community

Download or read book The Jewels of the Community written by Alicia L. Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the United States Census Bureau (2010) increasing numbers of children in the U. S. are living with their grandparents, whom are responsible for their grandchildren's care and upbringing. Although this phenomenon cuts across social class and ethnic group lines, it appears to be common among African Americans (Caputo, 2001; Heywood and sands and Golberg, Glen 2000). A qualitative study was conducted, using counter-storytelling narrative inquiry to gather and interpret the data. The Black feminist perspective was used as a guiding theoretical framework for exploring the experiences of these African American grandmothers. The purpose of the study is to provide insight into the lived experiences of African American grandmothers who are raising their grandchildren. Data collection included individual conversational interviews with African American grandmothers. This study concluded overall, the grandmothers viewed their experience. These views were displayed through actions by some school personnel. The grandmothers shared recommendations that could be helpful to public school personnel as they interact with grandmothers who are caring for their grandchildren.

Book A Structural Family Therapy Approach to Understanding African American Grandmothers

Download or read book A Structural Family Therapy Approach to Understanding African American Grandmothers written by Laura Price and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The African American community continues across generations to encounter struggles, as well as robust strengths entrenched by older members such as grandparents and great-grandparents in the family to cope with the reality of their existence effectively (Glass, 2002; Strom, 2006). This study examined a strength in African American families, grandmothers raising grandchildren from a structural family therapy approach. The present study predicted that African American grandmothers who were raising their grandchildren would experience significantly higher levels of stress, a higher mean number of mental health, and lesser mean number of support than grandmothers who were not raising their grandchildren. These hypotheses were not supported, and there were no significant differences found between the level of stress, mental health, or support of grandmothers who were raising their grandchildren compared to those who were not raising their grandchildren. These findings suggest that despite previous studies suggesting that parenting as grandmothers is more stressful, increases mental health symptoms, and lacks support (Glass, 2002; Strom, 2006), for our sample, the addition of the parenting role did not significantly change their experience."--

Book The Benefits and Stressors of African American Grandmothers Raising Their Grandchildren

Download or read book The Benefits and Stressors of African American Grandmothers Raising Their Grandchildren written by Kymberly Williams-Cotton and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a focus on the benefits and stressors of grandmothers raising their grandchildren, this study examined 16 African American grandmothers raising grandchildren in grandparent-headed, absent parent households. The study revealed that 75% of the grandmothers found that the benefits were rooted simply in watching their grandchildren grow up safely and remaining active and feeling youthful in the constant company of their grandchildren. Half of the grandmothers (56.25%) indicated that dealing with their grandchildren's behavioral problems was a considerable source of stress. Another stressor that grandmothers identified was keeping up with the grandchildren's busy schedules, making sure they arrive, on time, wherever they need to be. The implication for service is that African American grandmothers need more intentional support and greater resources from social service agencies in order to be successful parents the second time around.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The study, in particular, was designed to examine the grandmothers' thoughts and feelings about their relationships with their substance abusing adult children. Additionally, the knowledge gained from these relationships was used to try to understand why these grandmothers take on the responsibility of caring for their grandchildren when their life plans may not have included this care-taking function at this current age or stage."--Publisher/Back cover.

Book The Experiences of African American Grandchildren Raised in Grandparent headed Families

Download or read book The Experiences of African American Grandchildren Raised in Grandparent headed Families written by Karia Bryn Kelch and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an increase in grandparents raising their grandchildren due to parental absence. This family structure has affected urban, single, low income African Americans at a higher rate than any other racial group. Research on grandchildren reared in grandparent-headed families (GHF) states these children are at risk for significant emotional, behavioral, physical problems, and learning disabilities than children living with their biological parents. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of African American grandchildren raised in GHF. Both quantitative and qualitative methodology was used, including individual interviews with 14 African American grandchildren ages 10-16 and their 6 grandparent caregivers, and the completion of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), which is a standard psychological measure. Results indicated that although the majority of the grandchildren were content living with their grandparents, they experienced challenges at school, including behavioral issues, low academic performance, and suspensions. Family factors that might affect grandchildren's adjustment to living in a GHF are discussed, as well as implications for therapists and recommendations for future research with grandchildren from GHF.

Book Becoming Grandma

Download or read book Becoming Grandma written by Lesley Stahl and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times Bestseller From one of the country’s most recognizable journalists, Lesley Stahl of CBS's 60 Minutes: How becoming a grandmother transforms a woman’s life. After four decades as a reporter, Lesley Stahl’s most vivid and transformative experience of her life was not covering the White House, interviewing heads of state, or researching stories at 60 Minutes. It was becoming a grandmother. She was hit with a jolt of joy so intense and unexpected, she wanted to “investigate” it—as though it were a news flash. And so, using her 60 Minutes skills, she explored how grandmothering changes a woman’s life, interviewing friends like Whoopi Goldberg, colleagues like Diane Sawyer (and grandfathers, including Tom Brokaw), as well as the proverbial woman next door. Along with these personal accounts, Stahl speaks with scientists and doctors about physiological changes that occur in women when they have grandchildren; anthropologists about why there are grandmothers, in evolutionary terms; and psychiatrists about the therapeutic effects of grandchildren on both grandmothers and grandfathers. Throughout Becoming Grandma, Stahl shares stories about her own life with granddaughters Jordan and Chloe, about how her relationship with her daughter, Taylor, has changed, and about how being a grandfather has affected her husband, Aaron. In an era when baby boomers are becoming grandparents in droves and when young parents need all the help they can get raising their children, Stahl’s book is a timely and affecting read that redefines a cherished relationship.
