Book Grandmothering While Black

Download or read book Grandmothering While Black written by LaShawnDa L. Pittman and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Grandmothering While Black, sociologist LaShawnDa L. Pittman explores the complex lives of Black grandmothers raising their grandchildren in skipped-generation households (consisting only of grandparents and grandchildren). She prioritizes the voices of Black grandmothers through in-depth interviews and ethnographic research at various sites—doctor's visits, welfare offices, school and day care center appointments, caseworker meetings, and more. Through careful examination, she explores the various forces that compel, constrain, and support Black grandmothers' caregiving. Pittman showcases a fundamental change in the relationship between grandmother and grandchild as grandmothers confront the paradox of fulfilling the social and legal functions of motherhood without the legal rights of the role. Grandmothering While Black illuminates the strategies used by grandmothers to manage their legal marginalization vis-à-vis parents and the state across a range of caregiving arrangements. In doing so, it reveals the overwhelming and painful decisions Black grandmothers must make to ensure the safety and well-being of the next generation.

Book The Jewels of the Community

Download or read book The Jewels of the Community written by Alicia L. Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the United States Census Bureau (2010) increasing numbers of children in the U. S. are living with their grandparents, whom are responsible for their grandchildren's care and upbringing. Although this phenomenon cuts across social class and ethnic group lines, it appears to be common among African Americans (Caputo, 2001; Heywood and sands and Golberg, Glen 2000). A qualitative study was conducted, using counter-storytelling narrative inquiry to gather and interpret the data. The Black feminist perspective was used as a guiding theoretical framework for exploring the experiences of these African American grandmothers. The purpose of the study is to provide insight into the lived experiences of African American grandmothers who are raising their grandchildren. Data collection included individual conversational interviews with African American grandmothers. This study concluded overall, the grandmothers viewed their experience. These views were displayed through actions by some school personnel. The grandmothers shared recommendations that could be helpful to public school personnel as they interact with grandmothers who are caring for their grandchildren.

Book A Structural Family Therapy Approach to Understanding African American Grandmothers

Download or read book A Structural Family Therapy Approach to Understanding African American Grandmothers written by Laura Price and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The African American community continues across generations to encounter struggles, as well as robust strengths entrenched by older members such as grandparents and great-grandparents in the family to cope with the reality of their existence effectively (Glass, 2002; Strom, 2006). This study examined a strength in African American families, grandmothers raising grandchildren from a structural family therapy approach. The present study predicted that African American grandmothers who were raising their grandchildren would experience significantly higher levels of stress, a higher mean number of mental health, and lesser mean number of support than grandmothers who were not raising their grandchildren. These hypotheses were not supported, and there were no significant differences found between the level of stress, mental health, or support of grandmothers who were raising their grandchildren compared to those who were not raising their grandchildren. These findings suggest that despite previous studies suggesting that parenting as grandmothers is more stressful, increases mental health symptoms, and lacks support (Glass, 2002; Strom, 2006), for our sample, the addition of the parenting role did not significantly change their experience."--

Book African American Grandparents Raising Their Grandchildren in Rural Areas

Download or read book African American Grandparents Raising Their Grandchildren in Rural Areas written by Emmanuel Nii Okai Clottey and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Grandparents are increasingly raising their grandchildren in the United States of America. Those grandparents who live in rural areas face limited resources to help them raise their grandchildren. This phenomenological study is an investigation of the phenomenon of African American grandparents raising their grandchildren in Southeastern rural Georgia and the resources available to them. It looked at what it will take to start a faith-based or community-based support group for these Africa American grandparents raising their grandchildren in a rural setting. The concept of phenomenology served as the theoretical foundation for the study with social ecological model and social support as supporting concepts. The findings show that African American grandparent caregivers in rural South Georgia face many challenges to their health and wellbeing including: legal hurdles, financial difficulties, their own health problems, their grandchildren's health problems, difficulties with educating their grandchildren, worries about the future of their grandchildren. The resources for health and wellbeing available at multiple ecological levels to the grandparent caregivers are inadequate to mitigate the challenges grandparent caregivers in rural areas face. On the basis of the study appropriate recommendations for interventions are made for grandparent caregivers in rural areas.

Book Stressors and Social Support Among African American Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Download or read book Stressors and Social Support Among African American Grandparents Raising Grandchildren written by Dorothea L. Ivey and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A substantial increase in the number of grandparents raising grandchildren occurred over the past three decades and moves across all ethnicities. African American (AA) grandparent caregivers, however, experience the most stress; yet have the fewest resources as compared with other ethnicities. In addition, AA grandchildren are more likely to live with their grandparents than other ethnicities. This study qualitatively explores (1) the stressors and experiences of grandparent caregiving among AA grandparents, (2) the importance of social support, and (3) the impact that grandparent caregiving has on relationships. A criterion sample of 7 AA grandparents (5 grandmothers, 1 great grandmother, and 1 great grandfather) was recruited from a human services agency in South Dallas County, TX. Data were collected through focus group discussions and from previous studies. Themes emerged among the grandparents relating to difficulty with school, lack of energy, and health issues. Due to the high demands of grandparent-headed households, grandmothers were less likely to participate in leisurely activities. Despite the social isolation, half of the grandmothers would prefer to continue raising their grandchildren than to release them to their parents or the child welfare system. Another finding was that all of the grandparent caregivers rely on their church communities for support. These findings suggest the need for more rigorous assessment of stressors and the availability of social support which could lead to the implementation of programs targeting grandparent caregivers in South Dallas County, TX.

Book The Benefits and Stressors of African American Grandmothers Raising Their Grandchildren

Download or read book The Benefits and Stressors of African American Grandmothers Raising Their Grandchildren written by Kymberly Williams-Cotton and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a focus on the benefits and stressors of grandmothers raising their grandchildren, this study examined 16 African American grandmothers raising grandchildren in grandparent-headed, absent parent households. The study revealed that 75% of the grandmothers found that the benefits were rooted simply in watching their grandchildren grow up safely and remaining active and feeling youthful in the constant company of their grandchildren. Half of the grandmothers (56.25%) indicated that dealing with their grandchildren's behavioral problems was a considerable source of stress. Another stressor that grandmothers identified was keeping up with the grandchildren's busy schedules, making sure they arrive, on time, wherever they need to be. The implication for service is that African American grandmothers need more intentional support and greater resources from social service agencies in order to be successful parents the second time around.

Book The Lived Experiences of African American Grandfathers Raising Their Grandchildren

Download or read book The Lived Experiences of African American Grandfathers Raising Their Grandchildren written by Michael R. Twyman and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the most recent US Census statistics, there is an estimated 2.5 million grandparents raising their grandchildren in the United States without the children's parents present in the household. In Indianapolis, the figure constitutes nearly 9,000 households. There are a disproportionately higher number of African American grandparents that are primary caregivers to their grandchildren. However, 6 percent of this population is grandfathers who are raising their grandchildren, while some 40 percent of the grandmothers are married. The research is a compilation of interviews with ten African American grandfathers living in Indianapolis who are raising their grandchildren in their households without the presence of the grandchildren's parents. These men were either married or widowed and have either formal custody of their grandchildren through adoption, foster care/kinship care, court-appointed guardianship or informal living arrangements. The objective of the research was to capture the lived experiences of these grandfathers who were fulfilling their caregiving roles. Thus, the research methodology used was reflective of the phenomenological paradigm of inquiry.

Book The Experiences of African American Grandchildren Raised in Grandparent headed Families

Download or read book The Experiences of African American Grandchildren Raised in Grandparent headed Families written by Karia Bryn Kelch and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an increase in grandparents raising their grandchildren due to parental absence. This family structure has affected urban, single, low income African Americans at a higher rate than any other racial group. Research on grandchildren reared in grandparent-headed families (GHF) states these children are at risk for significant emotional, behavioral, physical problems, and learning disabilities than children living with their biological parents. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of African American grandchildren raised in GHF. Both quantitative and qualitative methodology was used, including individual interviews with 14 African American grandchildren ages 10-16 and their 6 grandparent caregivers, and the completion of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), which is a standard psychological measure. Results indicated that although the majority of the grandchildren were content living with their grandparents, they experienced challenges at school, including behavioral issues, low academic performance, and suspensions. Family factors that might affect grandchildren's adjustment to living in a GHF are discussed, as well as implications for therapists and recommendations for future research with grandchildren from GHF.

Book African American Grandmothers and the Education of Grandchildren

Download or read book African American Grandmothers and the Education of Grandchildren written by Boyer Valarie and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The roles of grandparents, from occasional helpers to custodial adults in their grandchildren's lives, often raise levels of social discomfort among those involved, especially when the children are still in elementary school. A disproportionate number of custodial grandparents are African American women. This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of 8 custodial African American grandmothers in Delaware regarding the education of their school-aged grandchildren. The theoretical foundation was Carter and McGoldrick's theory of families as interconnected systems, and Sands, Goldberg-Glen, Shin, and Robin's theory that life event changes often lead to stress and coping strategies. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using open and axial coding to reveal common themes. The grandmothers saw themselves as surrogate parents to their grandchildren and depended on support programs to help with their grandchildren's education. A recommendation is for school districts to build relationships with these African American grandmothers to help facilitate the education of their grandchildren and provide effective and affordable services.
