Book excerpt: The roles of grandparents, from occasional helpers to custodial adults in their grandchildren's lives, often raise levels of social discomfort among those involved, especially when the children are still in elementary school. A disproportionate number of custodial grandparents are African American women. This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of 8 custodial African American grandmothers in Delaware regarding the education of their school-aged grandchildren. The theoretical foundation was Carter and McGoldrick's theory of families as interconnected systems, and Sands, Goldberg-Glen, Shin, and Robin's theory that life event changes often lead to stress and coping strategies. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using open and axial coding to reveal common themes. The grandmothers saw themselves as surrogate parents to their grandchildren and depended on support programs to help with their grandchildren's education. A recommendation is for school districts to build relationships with these African American grandmothers to help facilitate the education of their grandchildren and provide effective and affordable services.

Book excerpt: According to the United States Census Bureau (2010) increasing numbers of children in the U. S. are living with their grandparents, whom are responsible for their grandchildren's care and upbringing. Although this phenomenon cuts across social class and ethnic group lines, it appears to be common among African Americans (Caputo, 2001; Heywood and sands and Golberg, Glen 2000). A qualitative study was conducted, using counter-storytelling narrative inquiry to gather and interpret the data. The Black feminist perspective was used as a guiding theoretical framework for exploring the experiences of these African American grandmothers. The purpose of the study is to provide insight into the lived experiences of African American grandmothers who are raising their grandchildren. Data collection included individual conversational interviews with African American grandmothers. This study concluded overall, the grandmothers viewed their experience. These views were displayed through actions by some school personnel. The grandmothers shared recommendations that could be helpful to public school personnel as they interact with grandmothers who are caring for their grandchildren.

This study sought to understand the role of African-American grandmothers as prevention-oriented health educators in the family. Full Model Fitted Regression Analyses were conducted on a sample of African-American grandmothers (N = 105) with 10- to 19-year-old grandchildren. Findings suggest that grandmothers who adopt a proactive, teaching role with their grandchildren are more committed to doing so, confident about doing so, and in a context to do so. In particular, grandmothers who co-reside with their grandchildren are more likely to teach them about how to prevent transportation accidents than those who do not co-reside. These findings could contribute to innovations in existing grandparent education curricula.

Book excerpt: A substantial increase in the number of grandparents raising grandchildren occurred over the past three decades and moves across all ethnicities. African American (AA) grandparent caregivers, however, experience the most stress; yet have the fewest resources as compared with other ethnicities. In addition, AA grandchildren are more likely to live with their grandparents than other ethnicities. This study qualitatively explores (1) the stressors and experiences of grandparent caregiving among AA grandparents, (2) the importance of social support, and (3) the impact that grandparent caregiving has on relationships. A criterion sample of 7 AA grandparents (5 grandmothers, 1 great grandmother, and 1 great grandfather) was recruited from a human services agency in South Dallas County, TX. Data were collected through focus group discussions and from previous studies. Themes emerged among the grandparents relating to difficulty with school, lack of energy, and health issues. Due to the high demands of grandparent-headed households, grandmothers were less likely to participate in leisurely activities. Despite the social isolation, half of the grandmothers would prefer to continue raising their grandchildren than to release them to their parents or the child welfare system. Another finding was that all of the grandparent caregivers rely on their church communities for support. These findings suggest the need for more rigorous assessment of stressors and the availability of social support which could lead to the implementation of programs targeting grandparent caregivers in South Dallas County, TX.
