In the wake of the Holocaust and lynchings, of the Middle Passage and flight from Eastern Europe's pogroms, children’s literature provides diverse and complicated responses to the challenge of representing difficult collective pasts. Book excerpt: Histories of slavery and abolition are areas of study where research and materials written for use in all academic areas have grown significantly in the last decade. Authors and publishers have been using children's literature to tell the story of enslaved African Americans for decades. Children from varied backgrounds and cultures have been able to access these texts and shape their understanding of the African American experience. It becomes necessary to examine these texts across a historical trajectory in order to determine continuities, changes and transformations within the genre of stories of slavery and abolition for children. These types of analysis are as important as those that evaluate texts for their historical accuracy. Ideas of family separation and loss, black agency, white heroism and violence become evident throughout texts regardless of when and where their publication occurred. Throughout history, texts focusing on slavery and escape have presented the topic for young readers using a variety of themes and ideas. These works commonly include stories of family separation due to sale, death or loss; tales of black agency where enslaved Africans choose death or other risks over remaining in bondage and often require the assistance of both whites and blacks to achieve their freedom; and the feelings of hopelessness and despair that accompany enslavement or freedom if it is achieved too late in an individual's life. Early white abolitionist authors, mid-century African American writers and modern storytellers from different races all seek to utilize these common themes in order to describe enslavement in a way that creates an understandable narrative and personal connection for young readers. Equally important to the telling of the story of slavery in the United States are the illustrations that accompany more modern narratives. By the late twentieth century skilled authors and artists collaborated to create text and images that helped convey the emotions, violence and horrors associated with enslavement in the United States. Children's literature has historically dealt with naratives describing slavery and escape and has used the common themes of family separation, loss and violence in order to bring this information to the youngest readers.
