Book Cosmopolitan Africa 1700 1875

Download or read book Cosmopolitan Africa 1700 1875 written by Professor Trevor Getz and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cosmopolitan Africa, 1700-1875, offers an alternative interpretation of the 175 years leading up to the formal colonization of Africa by Europeans. In this brief and affordable text, author and series editor Trevor R. Getz demonstrates how Africans pursued lives, constructed social settings, forged trading links, and imagined worlds that were sophisticated, flexible, and well adapted to the increasingly global and fast-paced interactions of this period. Getz's interpretation of a "cosmopolitan Africa" is based on careful reading of Africans' oral histories and traditions, written documents, and images of or from the eighteenth century. Examining this time period from both social and cultural perspectives, Cosmopolitan Africa, 1700-1875, helps students to re-envision African societies in the time before colonization.

Book excerpt: The great movements of modern African history -- imperialism, nationalism, and the revolution of rising expectations -- are vividly presented in this authoritative history. It begins in 1875 when the majority of African peoples still preserved their old-established social and political structures. In the course of the next 60 years virtually the entire continent was brought under European hegemony -- only to be followed by the rise of an African nationalism that all but swept away, in a wave of independent nationhood, the dominions established by the Europeans. Offers a comprehensive account and analysis of this dramatic period.

Book Africa and the West A Documentary History

Download or read book Africa and the West A Documentary History written by William H. Worger and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-02 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa and the West presents a fascinating array of primary sources to engage readers in the history of Africa's long and troubled relationship with the West. Many of the sources have not previously appeared in print, or in books readily available to students. Volume 1 covers two major topics: the Atlantic slave trade and the European conquest. It details the beginnings of the slave trade, slavery as a business, the experiences of slaves, and the effect of abolitionism on the trade, using such documents as a letter from a sixteenth-century African king to the king of Portugal calling for a more regulated slave trade, and the nineteenth-century testimony of a South African slave accused of treason. The volume also covers the early nineteenth-century considerations of the costs and benefits of colonization, the development of conquest as the century progressed, with special attention to technology, legislation, empire, religion, racism, and violence, through such unusual documents as Cecil Rhodes's will and a chart of the costs of African animals exported to Western zoos.

Book The Making of Mission Communities in East Africa

Download or read book The Making of Mission Communities in East Africa written by Robert W. Strayer and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1978-01-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Making of Mission Communities in East Africa calls into question a number of common assumptions about the encounter between European missionaries and African societies in colonial Kenya. The book explores the origins of those communities associated with the Anglican Church Missionary Society from 1875 to 1935, examines the development within them of a "mission culture," probes their internal conflicts and tensions, and details their relationship to the larger colonial society. Professor Strayer argues that genuinely religious issues were important in the formation of these communities, that missionaries were ambivalent in their attitudes toward modernizing change and the colonial state alike, and that mission communities possessed substantial attractions even in the face of competition with independent churches. Dr. John Lonsdale of Trinity College, Cambridge has said that "It is a sensitive piece of revisionist history which breaks down the simple dichotomy of 'missions' and 'Africans' commonly found in earlier historiographies--and even in the period of profound crisis over female circumcision in Kikuyuland. In this, Professor Strayer shows convincingly how mission communities could be preserved from destruction by principled divisions between Africans as much as between their white missionaries. He has pursued themes rather than events and has therefore been able to make remarkably intimate observations of mission communities which were following their own internal patterns of growth, yet within the context of a deepening situation of colonial dependence.
