The use of layer-coloured contours with hill-shading gives a highly-effective and accurate picture of the landforms across the continent, and the clear digitally-produced place names and symbols allow cities and towns, rivers, lakes and other physical features to be easily identified. The map gives excellent coverage of the main transport - roads, railways and airports - making this map extremely useful either for study, reference or travel planning. Accompanying the main map is a separate inset map showing the continent in political coloration, with countries picked out in bright distinctive colours to aid identification, together with colourful thematic maps showing annual precipitation and natural vegetation across Africa. Philip's Africa Reference Map (Physical) is supplied in two versions: (a) laminated on both sides and rolled into a clear plastic tube for use as a wall map; and (b) unlaminated and folded with a tipped-on card cover for use when travelling

Download or read book Down to Earth written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-10-24 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1992, world leaders adopted Agenda 21, the work program of the 1992 U.N. Conference on Environment and Development. This landmark event provided a political foundation and action items to facilitate the global transition toward sustainable development. The international community marked the tenth anniversary of this conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, in August 2002. Down to Earth, a component of the U.S. State Department's "Geographic Information for Sustainable Development" project for the World Summit, focuses on sub-Saharan Africa with examples drawn from case-study regions where the U.S. Agency for International Development and other agencies have broad experience. Although African countries are the geographic focus of the study, the report has broader applicability. Down to Earth summarizes the importance and applicability of geographic data for sustainable development and draws on experiences in African countries to examine how future sources and applications of geographic data could provide reliable support to decision-makers as they work towards sustainable development. The committee emphasizes the potential of new technologies, such as satellite remote-sensing systems and geographic information systems, that have revolutionized data collection and analysis over the last decade.

Book South America Central America and Africa

Download or read book South America Central America and Africa written by Rolf Bohme and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topographic mapping plays a basic and important role within the extensive field of cartography. In recent years, this type of mapping has become somewhat neglected and available literature is normally restricted to details concerning the programmes of individual countries often presented in the form of monographs. Topographic maps are essential tools for use in development projects, resource exploitation, the planning of construction, infrastructure and recreation. They also give detailed illustration of the relative degrees of development of areas within a landscape and are thus unique in demonstrating the cultural status of a country. This book is the second of three volumes and gives details and examples of topographic maps from Central and South America and Africa. The information supplied for each country consists of a text, including a brief history of the development of topographic mapping, geodetic data, map scales and series, as well as extracts of maps and index sheets illustrating the present status of map coverage within that country. There is currently no other work employing the approach adopted in assembling this inventory. This work is a comprehensive and important reference and source book for information in the field of topographic mapping.
