Book Cotton in Africa

Download or read book Cotton in Africa written by Uma J. Lele and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of state-federal relations in developing agricultural economies must first address such issues as the overall role of government, the need for public administrative suppport and the relative roles of state and federal governments during agricultural transformation. After examining the historical antecedents of local-state-federal relations in agricultural development, this paper presents an analytical normative model suggesting guidelines for assigning fiscal responsibilities for agricultural programs among tiers of the government. It then examines empirical evidence against the background of the analytical model; isolates the critical issues in government relations in Nigerian agriculture; and makes some recommendations that may guide relationships in the future. The next sections present a brief sketch of historical antecedents and an analytical model of the criteria for assigning responsibilities for agriculture between state and federal governments. The paper then examines the empirical evidence, while the final section isolates the critical issues in local-state-federal relations in Nigerian agriculture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The textile industry was one of the first manufacturing activities to become organized globally, as mechanized production in Europe used cotton from the various colonies. Africa, the least developed of the world’s major regions, is now increasingly engaged in the production of this crop for the global market, and debates about the pros and cons of this trend have intensified. Hanging by a Thread: Cotton, Globalization, and Poverty in Africa illuminates the connections between Africa and the global economy. The editors offer a compelling set of linked studies that detail one aspect of the globalization process in Africa, the cotton commodity chain. From global policy debates, to impacts on the natural environment, to the economic and social implications of this process, Hanging by a Thread explores cotton production in the postcolonial period from different disciplinary perspectives and in a range of national contexts. This approach makes the globalization process palpable by detailing how changes at the macroeconomic level play out on the ground in the world’s poorest region. Hanging by a Thread offers new insights on the region in a global context and provides a critical perspective on current and future development policy for Africa. Contributors: Thomas J. Bassett, Jim Bingen, Duncan Boughton, Brian M. Dowd, Marnus Gouse, Leslie C. Gray, Dolores Koenig, Scott M. Lacy, William G. Moseley, Colin Poulton, Bhavani Shankar, Corinne Siaens, Colin Thirtle, David Tschirley, and Quentin Wodon.

Book Cotton Cultivation in Africa

Download or read book Cotton Cultivation in Africa written by Benjamin Coates and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton Cultivation in Africa: Suggestions on the Importance of the Cultivation of Cotton But there are some who believe that the present is the proper time for action, and that they have a duty to perform in this great work, that should not be ne gleeted. To such it is desired to make a few sugges tions, under a belief that, with proper effort, much may be done now to effect the desired result, and that mea sures maybe commenced immediately, which will even tuate, at no distant period, in a general emancipation, without violence of any kind, and without any collision with the laws of the land. As slavery originated in the spirit of gain, by which alone it is still sustained, it is proposed to make use of the same agency to accomplish its overthrow. It is generally conceded that the profit derived from the culture of Cotton is the chief support of slavery in America, and this being the most vulnerable point, is that towards which the attack on the institution should be directed; for whatever shall prove a 111ilable in making slave labor unprofitable, must of course cause the demand for that labor to cease. It is proposed to accomplish this result by means of the cultivation of cotton in Africa, with the use of free labor. As the soil of Africa is much more fertile than that of the United States, and is particularly adapted to the growth of cotton, the advantages in its favor must be apparent to the most superficial observer; for not only can all the best varieties at present cultivated in the United States, be more cheaply raised in or Central Africa, but there are several kinds indigenous to that conti nent, of superior quality, that have been highly ap proved in the English market. W'hen it is remembered that this plant is perennial in Africa, and produces very much more than it does in America, where it must be planted annually, the superiority of the former over the latter will be very obvious; but in comparing the cost of labor in the two countries, the difference is still greater in favor of the free labor of Africa, over the slave labor of America.
