Book The Earth and Its Inhabitants Vol 2

Download or read book The Earth and Its Inhabitants Vol 2 written by Elisee Reclus and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-03 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Earth and Its Inhabitants, Vol. 2: Africa; North-West Africa On the North African seaboard the rounded mass of the plateau of Barka corresponds with the region of Tunis, which limits the Gulf of Cabes towards the west, and projects in the Carthaginian headlands in the direction of Sicily. The two territories resemble one another in their geographical position, their climate, and products. They also played their part in the history of the old world, one through its Hellenic colonies, the other through its Phoenician republic. In comparing Cyrene with Carthage, observers have dwelt on the natural advantages of the former, and have expressed their surprise that it never rose to the same pitch of commercial prosperity as its western rival. It is, however, to be observed that for the purposes of international trade Carthage really occupied a position far superior to that of the maritime cities of Cyrenaica. Forming no part of the Greek world, it did not reach the same standard of general culture; and although not lacking great thinkers, it never exercised the same influence in the development of the arts and sciences. Book The Story of Life the Environment

Download or read book The Story of Life the Environment written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Story of Life & the Environment: An African Perspective is about the fragile miracle of life. It's a celebration of the Earth's rich and wonderful diversity - the species, populations, communities and ecosystems that surround us - and of nature's resilience. It unpacks the three major ecosystems: fresh water, the ocean and the land, and the teeming life each supports on and around Africa. It discusses evolution and the ever-branching tree of life; how systems work, how populations expand and contract, and how all the elements of life interact. And it tells the story of how humans originated in Africa, and how we have evolved to become modern people. The book sounds a warning about our human impact on the planet, which is fostering rapid climate change, as well as massive over-consumption and depletion of resources. The book is also about responsible planning and management of our environment and natural resources to redress damage and ensure sustainability. This is the story of life and the environment in Africa."--Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wealth of information and analysis on the environmental forces that have helped shaped the cultures of the African continent. A scholarly reference work that will also appeal to the general reader, Sub-Saharan Africa sets the story of the African environment within the context of geological time and shows how the continent's often harsh conditions prompted humans to develop unique skills in agriculture, animal husbandry, and environmental management. Part of ABC-CLIO's Nature and Human Societies series, this book enables readers to better grasp the extent of humanity's effect on our world. Of particular interest are the book's sections dealing with the impact of the Biafran famine of the 1960s, the Sahelian drought of the 1970s, population growth, and the ongoing challenges of war and HIV/AIDS. Crucially, the book also shows how, despite their relative poverty, many African states have coped admirably with rapid urbanization and have developed world-class conservation and sustainability programs in order to protect and harness some of the most endangered species in the world.

This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life-Histories of African Game Animals, Vol. 1 At present we know so little regarding the habits and life-history of the various game animals that we find our selves at a loss to account for many of their most obvious peculiarities. For instance, the distribution of almost any game animal offers some features which with our present knowledge are inexplicable. It is well known that every animal, or plant for that matter, has strongly within it the tendency to enlarge its distributional area until it covers the habitable earth. It is equally Well known, although not so universally kept in mind, that the distribution Of each species marks the limits within which it is able successfully to compete with its environment. It would appear, there fore, a comparatively easy matter to determine the factors which are accountable for the distribution of any species; and yet no task in natural history is more difficult. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Native African Races and Culture But it is in the most rudimentary adjustments to climate and geographic peculiarities that the genius of the native races is shown. Dowd tells how the Bushmen, living in the waterless Kalahari desert and having often to go without water for sev eral days, made even this environment yield them liquid. When they came to the dried bed of a river or pond, in pursuit of game, they would take a long reed and make a primitive filter by tying long grass around one end of this tube. They would then push the filter end as deep as possible into the muddy soil, allowing the water to slowly penetrate the filter. The water would then be drawn up by suction and discharged into an egg shell. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
