Book Into India Out of Africa

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alistair Caldicott
  • Publisher : Lulu.com

  • ISBN : 1413741088

Download or read book Into India Out of Africa written by Alistair Caldicott and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2004-12-01 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the word go, the style and tenor of this book is set. And it doesn't take long before we realise we are in for a raunchy, realistic, roughish ride; so seat yourself comfortably. Be transported from the relentlessly chaotic assault on the senses that is India to the cool Himalayan magnificence of trekking to Everest Base Camp. Through the vastness of Australia, unable to escape the predictably painful experiences of England's cricket team, before plunging into the outdoor activity challenges of New Zealand. Then, perhaps most compelling of all, the continent of Africa from the bottom up. An ambitious journey overland encompassing Africa's most extreme tip right up to its snow-covered top, Mt Kilimanjaro. Here it is not so much the final destination as all that is entailed to get there that informs and entertains. With a refreshing attitude, this book doesn't try to be the great African travel book drowning you with its intensity; Bruce Chatwin it is not. But it is a breath of fairly fresh air (excluding a lot of dust and some graphically described indigenous odours). The tone is conversational and intimate; the author takes the reader along with him on his (slightly) bumpy travels, and there is a splendid lack of any sort of political correctness, although Alistair is actually broad-minded and unprejudiced (minus a few Australians). He understands the people he meets. Without wanting to be remotely serious-because he isn't-this is a book that is kind and understanding of different places and people. The author observes, records, and attempts to shed light on people, places and experiences that are not of the everyday variety. The traveller-both experienced and of the armchairvariety-could have many a worse companion than this book.

Book The World of Child Labor

Download or read book The World of Child Labor written by Hugh D. Hindman and published by M.E. Sharpe. This book was released on 2009 with total page 1033 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The World of Child Labor" details both the current and historical state of child labor in each region of the world, focusing on its causes, consequences, and cures. Child labor remains a problem of immense social and economic proportions throughout the developing world, and there is a global movement underway to do away with it. Volume editor Hugh D. Hindman has assembled an international team of leading child labor scholars, researchers, policy-makers, and activists to provide a comprehensive reference with over 220 essays. This volume first provides a current global snapshot with overview essays on the dimensions of the problem and those institutions and organizations combating child labor. Thereafter the organization of the work is regional, covering developed, developing, and less developed regions of the world. The reference goes around the globe to document the contemporary and historical state of child labor within each major region (Africa, Latin and South America, North America, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Oceania) including country-level accounts for nearly half of the world's nations. Country-level essays for more developed nations include historical material in addition to current issues in child labor. All country-level essays address specific facets of child labor problems, such as industries and occupations in which children commonly work, the national child welfare policy, occupational safety regulations, educational system, and laws, and often highlight significant initiatives against child labor.Current statistical data accompany most country-level essays that include ratifications to UN and ILO conventions, the Human Development Index, human capital indicators, economic indicators, and national child labor surveys conducted by the Statistical Information and Monitoring Program on Child Labor. "The World of Child Labor" is designed to be a self-contained, comprehensive reference for high school, college, and professional researchers. Maps, photos, figures, tables, references, and index are included.

Book Handbook of Adolescent Development Research and Its Impact on Global Policy

Download or read book Handbook of Adolescent Development Research and Its Impact on Global Policy written by Jennifer E. Lansford and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the 1.2 billion adolescents in the world today, 90% live in low- and middle-income countries. These adolescents face many challenges in their lives. Enrollment in secondary schools is still low in many parts of the world, with illiteracy rates approaching 30% in the least developed countries. Further, adolescents not in school are more vulnerable to trafficking, recruitment into armed conflict, and child labor. Many adolescent girls marry and begin bearing children at a young age, contributing to the perpetuation of poverty and health problems. Despite these many challenges, adolescents also represent a resource to be cultivated through educational opportunities and vocational training to move them toward economic independence, through initiatives to improve their reproductive health, and through positive interpersonal relationships to help them avoid risky behaviors and make positive decisions about their futures. Edited by Jennifer E. Lansford and Prerna Banati, the Handbook of Adolescent Development Research and its Impact on Global Policy tackles both the challenges and the promise of adolescence by presenting cutting-edge research on social, emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and physical development. In addition to providing actionable strategies for policy-makers and practitioners, this volume consciously adopts a positive framing of adolescence, representing young people as opportunities, rather than threats. Throughout the book, readers will find a valuable investment at the individual and societal levels as a way to contribute to a positive shift in the public discourse around young people today.

  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Thinking Black written by Rob Waters and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2018-11-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a common charge among black radicals in the 1960s that Britons needed to start “thinking black.” As state and society consolidated around a revived politics of whiteness, “thinking black,” they felt, was necessary for all who sought to build a liberated future out of Britain’s imperial past. In Thinking Black, Rob Waters reveals black radical Britain’s wide cultural-political formation, tracing it across new institutions of black civil society and connecting it to decolonization and black liberation across the Atlantic world. He shows how, from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s, black radicalism defined what it meant to be black and what it meant to be radical in Britain.

Book Out of Order Out of Sight

Download or read book Out of Order Out of Sight written by Adrian Piper and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adrian Piper joins the ranks of writer-artists who have provided much of the basic and most reliable literature on modern and contemporary art. Out of Order, Out of Sight is an artistic and intellectual autobiography and an (occasionally scathing) commentary on mainstream art, art criticism, and American culture of the last twenty-five years. Piper is an internationally recognized conceptual artist and the only African American in the early conceptual art movement of the 1960s. The writings in Out of Order, Out of Sight trace the development of her thinking about her artwork and the art world, and her evolving awareness of herself as a creative, racial, and gendered subject situated in an often limiting and always absurd cultural and social context.

He showed me that many believers have a brain that looks like this because of an unrenewed mind. He also spoke to me and shared that sickness (not always) sometimes can be caused by an unrenewed mind. Just like different illnesses that can be passed down from generation to generation, toxic thinking can be passed down from generation to generation. As a former Hindu, I share the keys to how I gained victory over mental and physical sickness that was caused by a toxic thought life. These insights helped me break free from many generations of the depths of darkness found in thought (fear, worst-case scenarios, negative thinking, depression, etc.), and they will help the readers as well. With mental illness growing exponentially today, it points to us that there is an absolute necessity to rewire our brain. For people struggling to overcome mental torment, God will bring us into a fragrant garden full of fertile soil. The insights of this book can help us grow a healthy thought life from years of tormented mind. Benefits that readers will take away from this book: a rewired brain (creates health; scientifically proven as well) keys for mental and physical healing overcome mental torment recognize seasons and how to graduate from them receive various breakthroughs through obedience and surrender For more information, go to walkingwiththelion.com.
