Book The Significance of Minor Forest Produce in the Indian Tribal Economy

Download or read book The Significance of Minor Forest Produce in the Indian Tribal Economy written by Kalsani Mohan Reddy and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-19 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses empirical data to articulate the issues of the Indian tribal economy in general and the role of minor forest produce in the tribal economy in particular. It throws new light on hitherto under-researched areas, especially those related to the significance of minor forest produce. This book is primarily based on the functioning of the tribal economy and draws on the experience gained by the author during his sojourn as a research scholar working the debt of tribal farmers and the technological gap in tribal agriculture. Empirical evidence is given in the present book to explore the validity of the earlier hypotheses in respect of the contribution of minor forest produce to the total income of the tribal households. Furthermore, a statistical analysis is undertaken to ascertain the relative contribution of each forest product to the augmentation of tribal earnings. The empirical work in this book also corroborates the theories of dependency between the forest and the tribals.

Book India and Global Climate Change

Download or read book India and Global Climate Change written by Michael A. Toman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the impact of climate change will most likely be greatest with the already poor and vulnerable populations in the developing world, much of the writing about the costs and benefits of different policies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is by Western scholars, working in advanced industrialized economies. Drawing the majority of its contributions from authors based at Indian universities and other research centers, India and Global Climate Change provides a developing world perspective on the debate. With a population of over one billion, and an economy that is undergoing substantial restructuring and greatly increased economic growth after a number of years of stagnation, India has an exceptional stake in the debate about climate change policy. Using the Indian example, this volume looks at such policy issues as the energy economy relationships that drive GHG emissions; the options and costs for restricting GHG emissions while promoting sustainable development; and the design of innovative mechanisms for expanded international cooperation with GHG mitigation.

Government of India implemented the farm Forestry Programme, a component of social Forestry Programme since 1980, to involve farms in tree plantation activities. Farm Forestry Programme was defined as the practice of forestry in all its aspects on farm or village land, generally integrated with other farm operation. It is a programme of planting of trees on bunds and boundaries of the fields of farmers and to be taken up by the farmers themselves. The Programme persuaded farmers to grow trees on farmlands, farm bunds and particularly in environmentally fragile areas, by distributing various tress species, which attracted large numbers of farmers in several states. considering the widespread adoption of the farm forestry programme by farmers particularly in Karnataka, this study has examined the development of social and Farm Forestry in India, assessed the economics of tree crops cultivated on farm vis-a-vis annual crops by using rigorous project appraisal techniques and other analytical tools, examined labour utilization and income generation, marketing aspects, and also environmental issues raised against certain tree species such as eucalyptus planted by farmers. Economic and environmental analysis of tree cultivation by farmers illustrated the profitability and other benefits accrued by farmers. The Study suggests for promoting afforestation activities for efficient use and management of land and tree resources. The study will be useful for researchers, policy makers and practitioners." Dr. S. Puttaswamaiah is Lecturer in the Department of Economics, Bangalore University, Bangalore. Having specialized in Environmental Economics, his areas of research interest include agricultural economics, health economics, public economics and development economics. He has carried out different research studies in the above areas, while previously working in research institutes. Book Managing the Forest for Sustainable Development

Download or read book Managing the Forest for Sustainable Development written by Firdos Ahmad and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, Aligarh Muslim University (Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India; Department of Economics), language: English, abstract: Forest is an important renewable resource and play vital role in the economic development of a developing country like India since the existence of human civilizations. They are rich sources of energy, housing, firewood, timber and fodder and they provide employment to a large section of the rural population. They also plays critical role in maintaining the ecological balance. The present consumption level and supply of forest products reveals that there is shortage of supply of forest products in comparison to its demand for various purposes except for wrapping, packaging paper and paper board and it is also expected to increase in near future because of rising population and growing economy which will make the realization of goal of sustainable development more difficult. Since we can neither stop the growth of population nor we can restrict the development of our country, there is only one option i.e. increasing the forest cover area and the density of existing forests. For this purpose we will find out those states in which there is shortfall of forest cover against the standard forest area. The result of the study reveals that the states like Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalya, Mizoram, Assam, Nagaland and Tripura are in comfortable position and there is no need to over emphasis on the management of forest in these states. But for the states like Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal etc. the forest cover area is not comfortable and there is need to manage the forest and adopt the policy of aforestation especially in wasteland
