Download or read book Affective Imageries written by Marcelle Trote Martins and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-11-05 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affective Imageries: Visual Politics of Wounded Bodies in Timor-Leste analyzes the political mobilization of images of wounded bodies in conflict and post-conflict societies. The book goes beyond traditional analyses of visual politics to offer a new perspective on the construction of affective imageries by considering the importance of poems, photographs and artworks, and calling attention to other ways in which bodies can be affected by conflicts beyond the debate over the physical wounds of war. Connecting debates on visual politics affects and memory studies, and drawing lessons from the East Timorese case, Marcelle Trote Martins reveals how ‘affective imageries’ are created and mobilized, determining the status of the bodies shown in the images, and the kind of (international) attention they merit.

Book The Cambridge Handbook of the Imagination

Download or read book The Cambridge Handbook of the Imagination written by Anna Abraham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-18 with total page 865 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human imagination manifests in countless different forms. We imagine the possible and the impossible. How do we do this so effortlessly? Why did the capacity for imagination evolve and manifest with undeniably manifold complexity uniquely in human beings? This handbook reflects on such questions by collecting perspectives on imagination from leading experts. It showcases a rich and detailed analysis on how the imagination is understood across several disciplines of study, including anthropology, archaeology, medicine, neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, and the arts. An integrated theoretical-empirical-applied picture of the field is presented, which stands to inform researchers, students, and practitioners about the issues of relevance across the board when considering the imagination. With each chapter, the nature of human imagination is examined - what it entails, how it evolved, and why it singularly defines us as a species.

Book Poetry and Power of Judgment

Download or read book Poetry and Power of Judgment written by Song Ye and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-25 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Chinese traditional poetry with an emphasis on the sources of pleasure in creating and appreciating classical Chinese poems and the basis for valid aesthetic judgments about poetry. The pleasure derived from art plays a crucial role in people’s evaluation of its worth. This book shows that Chinese classical poetics and Western aesthetics agree on the sources of aesthetic pleasure. Both hold, despite their obvious differences, that aesthetic taste essentially involves cognition. The book explores important ideas in traditional Chinese poetry, emphasizing that “Poetry is founded upon the power of judgement (shi).” This central idea guides other key concepts throughout the history of Chinese poetics, revealing the fundamental principles of creating and appreciating poetic art. The author presents new views of traditional Chinese poetry and poetics by unifying these long-dispersed basic propositions into a new coherent cognitivist framework that also gives due importance to emotion. Scholars and students studying Chinese literature, poetics, philosophy of art, and philosophy of mind will find this book interesting.

Book Urban Tourism in China

Download or read book Urban Tourism in China written by Mimi Li and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China has witnessed a dramatic development of tourism in urban context in the past thirty years, especially with its success in hosting the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 and the Shanghai World Exposition in 2010. Urban areas as tourism destination are receiving increasingly more popularity than traditional destinations such as national parks, natural reserves, and historical relics. Deriving largely from a special issue on "Urban Tourism Development and City Destination Marketing" (Journal of China Tourism Research), Urban Tourism in China presents the readers with a collection of nine independent research reports examining issues such as consumer behaviour in urban destinations, the social impact of tourism, destination image, leisure, regional collaboration, and heritage tourism in ancient towns. The investigations covered urban areas of different scales and diversified nature from major metropolises such as Beijing, and Guangzhou, to ancient towns like Lijiang and Pingyao. Readers who have interests of tourism research, business development, and in-depth understanding of urban life in China may find the book informative and interesting. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of China Tourism Research.

Book Affect and Emotion in Tourism

Download or read book Affect and Emotion in Tourism written by Dorina-Maria Buda and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing affect and emotion to the forefront of tourism studies, this book presents a new generation of scholars who consolidate emerging affective approaches and establish a route for scholarship that examines the roles of emotion and affect in tourism. Attuning to affect and emotion, this book steers the affective turn to encompass touring bodies and tourism places. Engaging the concept of affect as a constitutive element of social life often leaves academics grasping for terminology to describe something that is, by its very nature, beyond words. For this reason, as evident in the four interconnected sections of this volume, studying affect poses a significant and fruitful challenge to the status-quo of social scientific method and analysis. From African-American emotional labour while travelling, to visiting Banksy's Dismaland park, to affective heritagescapes, self-love, and travelling mittens, and across socio-spatial theories of emotions, decolonial feminist theory, and atmospheric politics, this book demonstrates the epistemic and empirical richness of affective tourism. Along with the contributors to this volume, the editors make a case for thinking about emotions and affects through collective and individual practices as interrelated shaping tourism encounters in and with places. That is, to break it down as doing, and as shared between bodies and places through the doing. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Tourism Geographies.
