Affect theory has long been interested in transmission or contagion but, inspired by Spinoza and Deleuze, Affect as Contamination goes further, as contamination is concerned with the materiality of bodies and their affective encounter with other matter. This brings urgency to the notion of affect, not only for bioart that works with risky bodies but also for understanding how to practise our bodies in the age of biotechnological manipulation and governance. Using challenging and transgressive bioart projects as provocative case studies for rethinking affect and bodily practice, Wolodzko follows various 'contaminants' from blood, hormones and viruses to food, glitter and plants. This takes the form of both personal accounts of encounters with the contaminations of bioart and critical analyses of aesthetic, material and technical objects, with each one highlighting in different ways the risky and uncertain nature of contamination. Book excerpt: In the early 1980s, two water-supply systems on the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina were found to be contaminated with the industrial solvents trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE). The water systems were supplied by the Tarawa Terrace and Hadnot Point watertreatment plants, which served enlisted-family housing, barracks for unmarried service personnel, base administrative offices, schools, and recreational areas. The Hadnot Point water system also served the base hospital and an industrial area and supplied water to housing on the Holcomb Boulevard water system (full-time until 1972 and periodically thereafter). This book examines what is known about the contamination of the water supplies at Camp Lejeune and whether the contamination can be linked to any adverse health outcomes in former residents and workers at the base.

Soil is the receptor of many contaminants from various sources. Contamination decreases the quality of the soil and adversely affects soil organisms. For this study, soil samples from thirteen locations contaminated from agricultural, industrial, and organic sources spread over the districts of Alappuzha and Kottayam in Kerala in the south west coast area of India were analyzed to study the changes in soil characteristics and its influence on soil microbial communities and their activities.

Book excerpt: The principal government entities involved at the Spring Valley site are carrying out their roles and responsibilities in cleaning up the site primarily under the Defense Environmental Restoration Program (environmental restoration program), which was established by the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986. Under the environmental restoration program, Defense is authorized to identify, investigate, and clean up environmental contamination at formerly used defense sites (FUDS). The Corps is responsible for these activities at Spring Valley. Defense is required under the environmental restoration program to consult with EPA, which has its own authority to act at the site under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (sometimes referred to as "Superfund"). Under the program, Defense's activities must also be consistent with a statutory provision that addresses, among other things, participation by the affected states-in this case, the District of Columbia. Under the Corps' program guidance for FUDS, the District of Columbia has a role in defining the cleanup levels at the Spring Valley site. In carrying out their roles, the government entities have, over time, formed an active partnership to make cleanup decisions. For example, the Corps leads the effort to identify hazards, but in many cases it uses the recommendations of the District of Columbia and EPA to look for hazards buried at certain sites. While the entities have not agreed on all cleanup decisions, officials acknowledge that, by having formed a partnership, a means exists to foster communication and collaboration, and officials of all three entities stated that the partnership is operating effectively. Continued progress at the site will depend, in part, on the effectiveness of this partnership over the duration of the cleanup period.
