Rebellion in Romanticism was not limited to fighting for the individual freedom of men, as people also fought in the name of national and social freedom. It was a struggle that encompassed many aspects of life and imagination. Romanticism is the child of youth. The youth shaped a new worldview, rebelled against the world order in literature and art, and proposed a new definition of freedom, including not only politics, but also aesthetics, philosophy, music, science, as well as lifestyle, thus imparting on everyday life the qualities of freedom and authenticity.

An ideal object existing in a mysterious sphere, inaccessible to normal cognition? Does it appear in one form only, or in many forms, perhaps infinitely many? Is it something constant, immutable, or rather something susceptible to change, depending on the individual, the cultural milieu, or the epoch? Is a rational defence of aesthetic value judgements possible, or is any discussion of this topic meaningless? The above questions arise out of the most complicated philosophic problems. Volumes have been written on each of them. The discussions which continue over the centuries, the plurality of views and suggested solutions, indicate that all issues are controversial and contestable. Each view can adduce some arguments supporting it; each has some weaknesses. Another source of difficulty is the vagueness and ambiguity of the language in which the problems are discussed. This makes it hard to understand the ideas of particular thinkers and sometimes makes it impossible to decide whether different formulations express the actual divergence of views or only the verbal preferences of their authors. Let us add that this imperfection does not simply spring from inaccuracy on the part of scholars, but also results from the complexity of the problems themselves. The matter is further complicated by important factors of a social character.

Book excerpt: Roman Ingarden's very extensive philosophical work in metaphysics, ontology, epistemology, and aesthetics con tinues to attract increasing attention both in Poland and in North America. Further work left uncompleted at his death is appearing. Major bibliographies of his work as well as of studies about his work are now in print. Ingar den's scattered articles on various questions in philosophy are being collected. And conferences devoted to his work are now held regularly. These diverse activities might suggest a similar diver sity in Ingarden's philosophical legacy. But such a sugges tion would be misleading. For interest in Ingarden's work has continued to centre on the one area which is arguably at the core of his achievement, namely the complex prob lems of aesthetics. In this field Ingarden seemed to pull together his various interests in ontology and epistemology especially. Here he brought those interests to focus on a set of issues that would occupy him creatively throughout the vicissitudes of his long and difficult scholarly life. More over, aesthetics is also the field where Ingarden perhaps most succeeded in orchestrating the many themes he owed to his phenomenological training while finally transposing the central issues into something original, something dis tinctively his own that philosophers can no longer identify as merely phenomenological. Ingarden's aesthetics not surprisingly has captured the interest today of many scholars in different fields.

Literatura polska w okresie romantyzmu rozwijała się w specyficznych warunkach historycznych i szczególnych okolicznościach kulturowych. Determinował ją aspekt polityczny. Polska nie miała wówczas swojej państwowości. Byt niepodległy jeszcze do początku XVIII wieku potężnego państwa legł u progu romantyzmu, pod koniec tegoż stulecia, w gruzach. Rosja, Prusy i Austria zajęły terytorium Polski, traktując zabrane ziemie jak podległe sobie kolonie. Rozmaite są tego przyczyny. Nie znaczy to jednak, że romantyzm polski był głuchy na nowoczesne tendencje estetyczne i nowoczesną filozofię europejską. To wątki także żywe i obecne w polskiej literaturze tego okresu, choć często zapomniane, a w refleksji badawczej nierzadko spychane na plan dalszy lub po prostu pomijane. Ta skromna książka ma przypomnieć o tym czytelnikowi anglojęzycznemu. Muzyka i nieskończoność to dwa wielkie tematy romantycznej literatury europejskiej i dwa małe tematy literatury polskiej w tym okresie. Rytm romantyzmu w Polsce wystukują złowieszczo i pospołu historia, polityka, rozmaite klęski, syberyjskie zsyłki, poczucie niewoli narodowej, ale kontrapunktem dla tej głównej linii melodycznej są rytmy i melodie zwykłego życia i niezwykłej sztuki. Nie tylko martyrologia narodowa i historyzm - wbrew stereotypom i utartym schematom myślenia o polskim romantyzmie - stanowią przedmiot zainteresowania polskich twórców. Trzeba mówić o tym głośno choćby na przekór ponownie rodzącym się upiorom nacjonalizmu. Obyczajowość, codzienność, stosunki społeczne, egzystencja, sztuka, podobnie jak w prozie Balzaca, są ważnymi tematami literackimi. Również zgłębianie estetycznych doznań, życie muzyczne, poszukiwanie sacrum w wymiarze indywidualnym poza instytucją Kościoła, charakteryzują polski romantyzm, w czym zbliża się on niejednokrotnie do kultury europejskiej tego okresu.

The earlier History of Aesthetics (3 volumes, 1960-68, English-language edition 1970-74) by the author of the present book was a history of men, of writers and artists who in centuries past have spoken up concerning beauty and art, form and crea tivity. The present book returns to the same subject, but treats it in a different way: as the history of aesthetic questions, concepts, theories. The matter of the two books, the previous and the present, is in part the same; but only in part: for the earlier book ended with the 17th century, while the present one brings the subject up to our own times. And from the 18th century to the 20th much happened in aesthetics; it was only in that period that aesthetics achieved recognition as a separate science, received a name of its own, and produced theories that early scholars and artists had never dreamed of.
