Book Aesthetics in the Planning and Design of the Completed Highway

Download or read book Aesthetics in the Planning and Design of the Completed Highway written by J. C. Womack and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In California, we are trying to build highways which are compatible to their surroundings. In almost every case, if we are successful--and are able to keep too many signs and similar hardware from intruding--we will have completed a project that people will consider to be aesthetic.

Book Aesthetics and Highway Design

Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to describe an approach for considering aesthetics as integral to highway design. By 'aesthetics' I intend the true meaning of the word, enhancing the visual quality of the highway setting, integrating the road with the landscape, improving the overall form of the roadway. I do not mean simply 'beautifying' the road with trees and shrubs once the route has been selected and the road has been engineered. Consideration of aesthetics simply cannot be added to evaluation or engineering. I will, however, suggest an approach for reconsidering aesthetics, right along with geometrics and operation and safety, etc. in every stage of highway planning and design starting at the preliminary stages. A fully integrated multidisciplinary approach is essential to ensure that unquantifiable environmental amenities and values are considered along with economic, technical and quantifiable environmental concerns in highway planning and design. This means using a design team of engineers, landscape architects and planners in all phases of route selection, preliminary design and detailed design. If we assume that design is the art of making technology (in this case highways) livable, aesthetics - the integration of the highway with the landscape - should be at the foundation of the design process. It should be inherent in the design process, not only evaluated once the route has been selected or the highway has been engineered. And if it is, it need not be evaluated, because it is the basis upon which all routes or alignments were generated. We are realizing that highway design is more than an engineering problem. To reflect a higher, more responsible concern for the road's aesthetic quality, design requires a collaborative effort among many professions. Book Aesthetics in Transportation

Download or read book Aesthetics in Transportation written by Lajos Héder and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a guide for transportation planners in creating attractive environments for people using transportation facilities and for those in the surrounding communities. The book which is based on 45 case studies and is illustrated by several photographs, begins with a formal discussion on art and then proceeds to facility design, potential impacts and improved procedures. A comprehensive section on sites and opportunities discusses topics such as cityscape, gateways, passageways, streets, plazas, and the renovation of older works. A number of procedures for managing arts programs are discussed. The section on highways provides design policy advice for planners on route selection, sign control, roadside development, and historic presentation. Other sections of the book discuss buses and streetcars and rapid transit. Aesthetic impacts involved in integrating transportation facilities with their surrounding communities are discussed. Book The Art and Science of Roadside Development

Download or read book The Art and Science of Roadside Development written by National Research Council (U.S.). Highway Research Board. Department of Design and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roadside development was investigated from all facets. A history of efforts to guide the practical applications of roadside development to America's rapidly growing highway system is summarized. The primary premise that highway location and design must be attractive as well as utilitarian has been expanded to include the right of way land, scenic areas, and land adjacent to the highway. Conservation of natural resources in highway design and construction is emphasized. Erosion control, landscape plantings, roadside rest areas, scenic turnouts and overlooks are discussed in terms of planning, design, and materials. Safety, maintenance, and future aspects of roadside development are also considered. legal authority and techniques for development are appended.
