Book Aesop s Fables Illustrated by Arthur Rackham with an Introduction by G K Chesterton

Download or read book Aesop s Fables Illustrated by Arthur Rackham with an Introduction by G K Chesterton written by Aesop and published by Digireads.com. This book was released on 2016-05 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the fable likely does not originate with Aesop; however it is with him that we associate the fable's most ancient of known origins. Little is actually known of the life of Aesop. According to the historical accounts of Herodotus, Aristotle, and Plutarch, he was a slave from the Greek island of Samos who lived between 620 and 564 BC. Described as a strikingly ugly man he is said to have secured his freedom through his cleverness. Known for his wit, Aesop would become employed as an advisor by kings and city-states. The simplicity of the fable cannot be overstated. The short narrative form and the use of animals to personifying particular human characteristics makes the fable a particularly useful form of instruction for imparting bits of wisdom to children. Dozens of fables have been attributed to Aesop, however given their sometimes conflicting moral lessons, the attribution of some fables to Aesop is considered by certain scholars as to be spurious. Collected together here are some of the most famous examples of Aesop's fables. This edition follows the translation of V. S. Vernon Jones, includes an introduction by G. K. Chesterton, is illustrated by Arthur Rackham, and is printed on premium acid-free paper.

Book Aesop s Fables Illustrated by Arthur Rackham

Download or read book Aesop s Fables Illustrated by Arthur Rackham written by Aesop and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book 'Aesop's Fables' presents a vast collection of entertaining stories with thought-provoking morals along with Rackham's beautifully imaginative and humourous illustrations. Many of the earliest children's books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Pook Press are working to republish these classic works in affordable, high quality, colour editions, using the original text and artwork so these works can delight another generation of children. About the author: Aesop (c. 620-560BC) is famous for his Fables which are still used as the basis of many children's plays and cartoons and to teach moral lessons today. He was born in Greece and little is known about his life except that he was a slave of Ladmon of Samos who received his freedom. Aesop probably did not personally commit his fables to the page but rather later eminent Greeks such as Socrates recorded them. About the Illustrator: Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) was one of the premier illustrators of the early 20th Century. He illustrated many books, the first of which was published in 1893. His humour, romance and soul made him the leading illustrator of the early twentieth century and his work is to be found in versions of almost every classic from Hansel and Gretel to The Tempest, from The Pied Piper to Peer Gynt. Characteristic of his work are gloomy forests of sinuous trees, nubile fairy maidens, and unsightly ogres and trolls. Throughout his career he developed a very individual style that was to influence a whole generation of children, artists and other illustrators. His haunting humour and dreamlike romance adds to the enchantment and fantasy of children's literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illustrated collection includes hundreds of fables that have influenced our world for centuries. The stories attributed to Aesop, a slave and storyteller who lived in Greece around 620–564 BCE, were originally passed on through oral tradition before first being transcribed several centuries after his death. Many of these fables use animals as the main characters to convey deeper meanings and morals that have become ingrained in our cultural and personal belief systems. This elegant leather-bound volume includes 488 fables, along with more than 100 illustrations by celebrated artists Arthur Rackham and Walter Crane. A scholarly introduction examines Aesop’s life and the oral tradition, providing readers with further insight into the world of the humble storyteller whose presence continues to touch us today.

Charles Robinson (1870-1937) was a British illustrator of the Golden Age born into an industrious and well respected family of deeply talented illustrators. His childhood was spent absorbing the family craft and when 25 his first full book was published – Robert Louis Stevenson’s Child’s Garden of Verses. Both his intricate and ornate pen and ink drawings as well as his rich watercolours display a languidness and elegance that is influenced by the burgeoning Art Nouveau movement. His art is characterised by a certain exuberance and playfulness that perfectly enhance the text they illustrate. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. Book excerpt: According to the Greek historian Herodotus, the fables were invented by a slave named Aesop, who lived in Ancient Greece during the 5th century BC. While some suggested that Aesop did not actually exist, and that the fables attributed to him are folktales of unknown origins, Aesop was indeed mentioned in several other Ancient Greek works - Aristophanes, in his comedy The Wasps, represented the protagonist Philocleon as having learnt the absurdities of Aesop from conversation at banquets; Plato wrote in Phaedo that Socrates whiled away his jail time turning some of Aesop's fables which he knew into verses; Demetrius of Phalerum compiled the fables into a set of eleven books (Lopson Aisopeion sunagogai), which have been lost, for the use of orators. There was also an edition in elegiac verse by an anonymous author, which was often cited in the Suda.
