Book excerpt: The plot centers on Nina Leeds, the daughter of an Ivy League professor, who is devastated when her adored fiancé is killed in World War I, before they have a chance to consummate their passion. Ignoring the unconditional love of the novelist Charles Marsden, Nina embarks on a series of sordid affairs before determining to marry an amiable fool, Sam Evans. While Nina is pregnant with Sam's child, she learns a horrifying secret known only to Sam's mother: insanity runs in the Evans family and could be inherited by any child of Sam's. Realizing that a child is essential to her own and to Sam's happiness, Nina decides on a "scientific" solution. She will abort Sam's child and conceive a child with the physician Ned Darrell, letting Sam believe that it is his. The plan backfires when Nina and Ned's intimacy leads to their falling passionately in love. Twenty years later, Sam's "son" Gordon Evans is approaching manhood, with only Nina and Ned aware of the boy's true parentage. The meaning of the title is suggested by the aging Nina in a speech near the end of the play: "Our lives are strange dark interludes in the electrical display of God the Father!"--Wikipedia.com.

Book Fifteenth Century Studies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Edelgard E. DuBruck
  • Publisher : Camden House
  • Release : 2001-03
  • ISBN : 9781571132284
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Fifteenth Century Studies written by Edelgard E. DuBruck and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2001-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1977 as the publication organ for the Fifteenth-Century Symposium, Fifteenth-Century Studies has appeared annually since then. It publishes essays on all aspects of life in the fifteenth century, including literature, drama, history, philosophy, art, music, religion, science, and ritual and custom. The editors strive to do justice to the most contested medieval century, a period that is the stepchild of research. The period defies consensus on fundamental issues: some dispute, in fact, whether the fifteenth century belonged at all to the middle ages, arguing that it was a period of transition, a passage to modern times. At issue, therefore, is the very tenor of an age that stood under the tripartite influence of Gutenberg, the Turks, and Columbus. Volume 26 contains the customary survey of research on late-medieval drama. There are six articles on French literature, four on German topics, two on Italian art, one on Spanish medieval predication, and three on English literary matters. Six of the articles focus on women and misogyny. Further topics include: popular approaches to problems of daily living; the crusades and mysticism; an early warning against excess in travel and exploration; the conduct of princes as described in chronicles; the so-called Pope Joan; theater, including farces, passion pageants, and triumphant entries of princes; critique of the estates; the function of authors, and their rights, duties, and privileges. There are 17 book reviews and two obituary dedications. The volume has been assembled with special care for style, excellence of research, and variety of approaches. Edelgard DuBruck is professor emerita of Modern Languages at Marygrove College, Detroit, Michigan. Barbara Gusick is professor emerita of English at Troy University-Dothan, Dothan, Alabama.

Book William Ellery Leonard

Download or read book William Ellery Leonard written by Neale Reinitz and published by Fairleigh Dickinson. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Ellery Leonard was an eccentric poet, professor, and critic whose romantic ideals were set against a world whose aesthetics were fast turning away from his own. He lived a life marked by both success and dramatic failure, both personally and professionally. His first wife’s suicide would haunt him and mark one of his greatest poems, the sonnet sequence Two Lives; his translations of Lucretius and Beowulf stood as hallmarks of the craft for decades after they were published; and his political satires written in response to the University sphere he lived and worked in remain as effective today as they once were.

Book Wolfish

Book excerpt: For fans of Helen MacDonald’s H is for Hawk and Mary Roach, Erica Berry’s WOLFISH blends science, history, and cultural criticism in a years-long journey to understand our myths about wolves, and track one legendary wolf, OR-7, from the Wallowa Mountains of Oregon Oregon Book Award Finalist * Shortlisted for the 2024 Pacific Northwest Book Award * A Most Anticipated Book of 2023: TIME, Los Angeles Times, Vulture, Salon, Bustle, The Rumpus, Financial Times, Reader's Digest, LitHub, Book Riot, Debutiful, and more! "Exhilarating." —The Washington Post "Wolfish starts with a single wolf and spirals through nuanced investigations of fear, gender, violence, and story. A GORGEOUS achievement." —Blair Braverman, author of Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube “This is one of those stories that begins with a female body. Hers was crumpled, roadside, in the ash-colored slush between asphalt and snowbank.” So begins Erica Berry’s kaleidoscopic exploration of wolves, both real and symbolic. At the center of this lyrical inquiry is the legendary OR-7, who roams away from his familial pack in northeastern Oregon. While charting OR-7’s record-breaking journey out of the Wallowa Mountains, Erica simultaneously details her own coming-of-age as she moves away from home and wrestles with inherited beliefs about fear, danger, femininity, and the body. As Erica chronicles her own migration—from crying wolf as a child on her grandfather’s sheep farm to accidentally eating mandrake in Sicily—she searches for new expressions for how to be a brave woman, human, and animal in our warming world. What do stories so long told about wolves tell us about our relationship to fear? How can our society peel back the layers of what scares us? By strategically unspooling the strands of our cultural constructions of predator and prey, and what it means to navigate a world in which we can be both, Erica bridges the gap between human fear and grief through the lens of a wrongfully misunderstood species. Wolfish is for anybody trying to navigate a world that is often scary. A powerful, timeless, and necessary book for our current and future generations.

Book Holy Bingo the Lingo of Eden Jumpin Jehosophat and the Land of Nod

Download or read book Holy Bingo the Lingo of Eden Jumpin Jehosophat and the Land of Nod written by Les Harding and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity abounds with fascinating, little-known trivia. Gas station attendants, for example, enjoy their own patron saint. So do stamp collectors, truss makers and sailors in the Bolivian navy. Jesus and Judas were common names in the biblical period, and Jesus of Nazareth had a brother named Judas. The forbidden fruit was more likely an apricot than an apple, and Delilah hired a barber to cut Sampson's hair. This dictionary of miscellany combs the annals of Christian esoterica, offering the most intriguing facts that are often forgotten, overlooked or ignored. Departing from the standard subject matter, this work serves as an unruly companion to the typical Bible dictionary. Nearly 1500 entries range from Aaron's beard (a popular name for Saint John's wort) to zounds (an antiquated Christian swear word). Information is cross-referenced and includes numerous quotations.
