It proposes several mathematical models of passive and active thermal protection systems with regard to factors such as surface ablation, surface roughness, phase transition of a liquid in porous materials, rotation of the body around its longitudinal axis, and exposure to low-energy disturbances. The author studies the possibilities to control thermochemical destruction and heat mass exchange processes in transpiration cooling systems exposed to low-energy disturbances. The numerical analysis of the heat and mass exchange process in carbon plastics under repeated impulse action is also presented. The numerical solutions of problems are compared with the known experimental data. The book is intended for specialists in the field of thermal protection and heat mass exchange, as well as graduate and undergraduates in physics and mathematics.

Book excerpt: Aircraft thermal management (ATM) is increasingly important to the design and operation of commercial and military aircraft due to rising heat loads from expanded electronic functionality, electric systems architectures, and the greater temperature sensitivity of composite materials compared to metallic structures. It also impacts engine fuel consumption associated with removing waste heat from an aircraft. More recently the advent of more electric architectures on aircraft, such as the Boeing 787, has led to increased interest in the development of more efficient ATM architectures by the commercial airplane manufacturers. The ten papers contained in this book describe aircraft thermal management system architectures designed to minimize airplane performance impacts which could be applied to commercial or military aircraft. Book excerpt: Differential equations governing the transient response of thermal protection systems to a hyperthermal environment are presented. These equations are expanded into finite-difference equations which are suitable for numerical solution. The equations provide for three layers of different materials, the first two of which may have moving boundaries. Concentrated heat sinks, such as metallic structures, may be located at the back surfaces of the second or third layers or of both layers. The analysis was developed primarily for charring ablators but is also applicable to impregnated ceramic, subliming, and heat-sink thermal protection systems. The principal difficulty encountered in numerical analysis of charring ablators is the extensive computer time required to obtain solutions. Provision is made in the numerical equations to introduce options which reduce computer time. The errors resulting from these options under various conditions are discussed. Good agreement is obtained between numerical results and exact solutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current status of aerothermal and thermal protection system modeling for civilian entry missions is reviewed. For most such missions, the accuracy of our simulations is limited not by the tools and processes currently employed, but rather by reducible deficiencies in the underlying physical models. Improving the accuracy of and reducing the uncertainties in these models will enable a greater understanding of the system level impacts of a particular thermal protection system and of the system operation and risk over the operational life of the system. A strategic plan will be laid out by which key modeling deficiencies can be identified via mission-specific gap analysis. Once these gaps have been identified, the driving component uncertainties are determined via sensitivity analyses. A Monte-Carlo based methodology is presented for physics-based probabilistic uncertainty analysis of aerothermodynamics and thermal protection system material response modeling. These data are then used to advocate for and plan focused testing aimed at reducing key uncertainties. The results of these tests are used to validate or modify existing physical models. Concurrently, a testing methodology is outlined for thermal protection materials. The proposed approach is based on using the results of uncertainty/sensitivity analyses discussed above to tailor ground testing so as to best identify and quantify system performance and risk drivers. A key component of this testing is understanding the relationship between the test and flight environments. No existing ground test facility can simultaneously replicate all aspects of the flight environment, and therefore good models for traceability to flight are critical to ensure a low risk, high reliability thermal protection system design. Finally, the role of flight testing in the overall thermal protection system development strategy is discussed.

In military aircraft thermal IESA is also considered to be a key enabler for the successful implementation of the next generation jet fighter weapons systems and countermeasures. Book excerpt: The adaptation of ZONA unified hypersonic/supersonic method ZONA7U and its integration/development into a ZONA aerothermoelastic software system for transatmospheric vehicle (TAV)/thermal protection system (TPS) design/analysis was proven a successful tool through feasibility study with cases of a CKEM body, blunt cones, and a modeled X-34 wing body. Preceding the feasibility study, substantial effort was directed toward further development of a new code, ZSTREAM, and using it and ZABRO to replace the outdated modules in SHVD, thus to couple them with SHABP for aerothermoelastic applications. In the feasibility study, the cases are well validated with FD solutions. Next, computed heat rates by applying ZONA aerothermoelastic software to X-34 through two assigned hypersonic trajectories were shown and found to agree with those using MINIVER. A potential TPS design procedure was established using the obtained heat rates as an input to MINIVER, resulting in a minimum weight TPS per hot-wall consideration. With FEM/TRIM modules, ASTROS* yields the trim solution and stress distribution for a flexible X-34 at a typical trajectory joint, demonstrating the multifunctionality in MDO for the aerothermoelastic software.
