Book Aerostructural Analysis of Aircraft Wings Using High Fidelity Aerodynamics and Medium Fidelity Structural Analyses

Download or read book Aerostructural Analysis of Aircraft Wings Using High Fidelity Aerodynamics and Medium Fidelity Structural Analyses written by Mitchell Small and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerostructural optimization has the potential to provide valuable information to aircraft designers conducting new concept exploratory analyses. An aerostructural analysis tool for wings has been incorporated into the high-fidelity three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes aerodynamic shape optimization framework Jetstream for future development of aerostructural optimization capability. Investigations were conducted using this tool, which uses medium-fidelity structural analyses and models, to evaluate the accuracy of the models with respect to wing weight and deflection estimates. Weight estimates using two medium-fidelity simplified structural models were found to have errors of 9.7% to 91.1% relative to weight estimates of high-fidelity aerostructural optimization test case results. Wing tip twist deflection estimates were found to have errors of 3% to 157% relative to the same baseline results. Both sets of results are deemed insufficiently accurate for the medium-fidelity structural models that were investigated; however recommendations for future development and improvements to an aerostructural analysis tool are presented.

Book Aero Structural Wing Design Optimization Using High Fidelity Sensitivity Analysis

Download or read book Aero Structural Wing Design Optimization Using High Fidelity Sensitivity Analysis written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper develops and implements a framework for the computation of coupled aero-structural sensitivities which are required for the design of aircraft where aeroelastic interactions are significant. All aero-structural sensitivities are computed using high-fidelity models of both the aerodynamics and the structure of the wing with a coupled-adjoint approach that uses single discipline sensitivity information to calculate the sensitivities of the coupled system. The sensitivities of drag with respect to a set of shape design variables are computed using the aero-structural adjoint method and compared with sensitivities given by the complex-step derivative approximation and finite-di erences. The aero-structural adjoint is shown to be both accurate and e cient, and to have a significant cost advantage when the gradient of a small number of functions with respect to a large number of design variables is needed. To demonstrate the usefulness of computing aero-structural sensitivities with the proposed method, results of two drag minimization problems with 190 shape design variables are presented. These results emphasize the importance of aero-structural coupling even in a conventional swept-wing design.

Book Sensitivity Analysis for Coupled Aero structural Systems

Download or read book Sensitivity Analysis for Coupled Aero structural Systems written by Anthony A. Giunta and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel method has been developed for calculating gradients of aerodynamic force and moment coefficients for an aeroelastic aircraft model. This method uses the Global Sensitivity Equations (GSE) to account for the aero-structural coupling, and a reduced-order modal analysis approach to condense the coupling bandwidth between the aerodynamic and structural models. Parallel computing is applied to reduce the computational expense of the numerous high fidelity aerodynamic analyses needed for the coupled aero-structural system. Good agreement is obtained between aerodynamic force and moment gradients computed with the GSE/modal analysis approach and the same quantities computed using the brute-force, computationally expensive, finite difference approximations. A comparison between the computational expense of the GSE/modal analysis method and a pure finite difference is presented. These results show that the GSE/modal analysis approach is the more computationally efficient technique if sensitivity analysis is to be performed for two or more aircraft design parameters.

Book High fidelity Aerostructural Optimization of Nonplanar Wings for Commercial Transport Aircraft

Download or read book High fidelity Aerostructural Optimization of Nonplanar Wings for Commercial Transport Aircraft written by Shahriar Khosravi and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the aerospace sector is currently responsible for a relatively small portion of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, the growth of the airline industry raises serious concerns about the future of commercial aviation. As a result, the development of new aircraft design concepts with the potential to improve fuel efficiency remains an important priority. Numerical optimization based on high-fidelity physics has become an increasingly attractive tool over the past fifteen years in the search for environmentally friendly aircraft designs that reduce fuel consumption. This approach is able to discover novel design concepts and features that may never be considered without optimization. This can help reduce the economic costs and risks associated with developing new aircraft concepts by providing a more realistic assessment early in the design process. This thesis provides an assessment of the potential efficiency improvements obtained from nonplanar wings through the application of fully coupled high-fidelity aerostructural optimization. In this work, we conduct aerostructural optimization using the Euler equations to model the flow along with a viscous drag estimate based on the surface area. A major focus of the thesis is on finding the optimal shape and performance benefits of nonplanar wingtip devices. Two winglet configurations are considered: winglet-up and winglet-down. These are compared to optimized planar wings of the same projected span in order to quantify the possible drag reductions offered by winglets. In addition, the drooped wing is studied in the context of exploratory optimization. The main results show that the winglet-down configuration is the most efficient winglet shape, reducing the drag by approximately 2% at the same weight in comparison to a planar wing. There are two reasons for the superior performance of this design. First, this configuration moves the tip vortex further away from the wing. Second, the winglet-down concept has a higher projected span at the deflected state due to the structural deflections. Finally, the exploratory optimization studies lead to a drooped wing with the potential to increase range by 4.9% relative to a planar wing.

Book Synthesis of Subsonic Airplane Design

Download or read book Synthesis of Subsonic Airplane Design written by E. Torenbeek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the education of aeronautical engineers at Delft University of Technology started in 1940 under tae inspiring leadership of Professor H.J. van der Maas, much emphasis has been placed on the design of aircraft as part of the student's curriculum. Not only is aircraft design an optional subject for thesis work, but every aeronautical student has to carry out a preliminary airplane design in the course of his study. The main purpose of this preliminary design work is to enable the student to synthesize the knowledge ob tained separately in courses on aerodynamics, aircraft performances, stability and con trol, aircraft structures, etc. The student's exercises in preliminary design have been directed through the years by a number of staff members of the Department of Aerospace Engineering in Delft. The author of this book, Mr. E. Torenbeek, has made a large contribution to this part of the study programme for many years. Not only has he acquired vast experience in teaching airplane design at university level, but he has also been deeply involved in design-oriented re search, e.g. developing rational design methods and systematizing design information. I am very pleased that this wealth of experience, methods and data is now presented in this book.

Book Influence of flight control laws on structural sizing of commercial aircraft

Download or read book Influence of flight control laws on structural sizing of commercial aircraft written by Rahmetalla Nazzeri and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing demand for new civil aircraft pushes aircraft manufacturers to develop innovative solutions that lead in particular to mass reductions. One way to achieve these kinds of improvements is the use of multidisciplinary analysis and optimization. In this sense the intention of this PhD thesis is to develop a multidisciplinary framework in order to quantify the impact of load alleviation function parameter changes on structural components like the wing and fuselage in terms of resulting mass changes. The developed iterative process chain covers the loads calculation including an active load alleviation system, a structural assessment of the wing and fuselage components and a dedicated feedback loop in order to update mass and stiffness properties of the loads calculation model. The study shows that significant mass reductions are achievable while on the other hand estimated mass penalties are irrelevant.

Book Aerodynamic Analysis of the Joiined wing Configuration of a High altitude Long endurance hale Aircraft

Download or read book Aerodynamic Analysis of the Joiined wing Configuration of a High altitude Long endurance hale Aircraft written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three-dimensional, unsteady, flow is simulated over the joined-wing section of a HALE (High-Altitude Long Endurance) aircraft based on the Sensorcraft configuration. This is the first step in the high-fidelity, nonlinear aeroelastic analysis of the HALE aircraft. These vehicles operate in a high-altitude, low-density, low-Reynolds number (Re) environment. Also, the sensor Equipment housed within the wings requires the sections to be thick. In order to produce the necessary lift, the wings of these aircraft are made extremely long compared to the average chord of the wing section, leading to aspect ratios typically around 25. The fluid loads experienced by the structure result in these high-aspect ratio wings undergoing large deflections. These can cause appreciable change in the geometry, and hence, in the corresponding flow, and necessitate an aeroelastic analysis. The flow solution is obtained by solving the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) governing equations, using the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model, or by using Detached Eddy Simulation (DES). The flow solver, COBALT60 is a finite-volume, cell-centered, second-order accurate in space and time, unstructured-grid flow solver. With successful completion of the validation cases, simulations were performed at the lower and upper limits (M = 0.4-0.6, [alpha] = 0-12ʻ) of the operating regime of the Sensorcraft. Inviscid simulations were also considered as a computationally efficient alternative to viscous simulations for the computation of the surface pressure loads to be applied on the structure, particularly at low angle of attack ([alpha] = 0ʻ). This is verified by performing inviscid simulations, and comparing the resulting pressure with the corresponding viscous results at the Mach number of 0.6. The surface pressure comparison is satisfactory for this low angle of attack (? = 0ʻ), whereas at? = 12ʻ, the presence of flow separation in the joint region, and a mild oblique shock at the trailing edge of the aft wing in the joint region results in significant viscous effects. A procedure has been set up for the preliminary process of load transfer to the joined-wing structure. The study serves as the foundation to provide an integrated aerodynamic and structural analyses software using a Multi-Disciplinary Computing Environment (MDICE) to predict the aeroelastic behavior of lifting bodies.

Book Advanced Aircraft Design

Download or read book Advanced Aircraft Design written by Egbert Torenbeek and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the overall appearance of modern airliners has not changed a lot since the introduction of jetliners in the 1950s, their safety, efficiency and environmental friendliness have improved considerably. Main contributors to this have been gas turbine engine technology, advanced materials, computational aerodynamics, advanced structural analysis and on-board systems. Since aircraft design became a highly multidisciplinary activity, the development of multidisciplinary optimization (MDO) has become a popular new discipline. Despite this, the application of MDO during the conceptual design phase is not yet widespread. Advanced Aircraft Design: Conceptual Design, Analysis and Optimization of Subsonic Civil Airplanes presents a quasi-analytical optimization approach based on a concise set of sizing equations. Objectives are aerodynamic efficiency, mission fuel, empty weight and maximum takeoff weight. Independent design variables studied include design cruise altitude, wing area and span and thrust or power loading. Principal features of integrated concepts such as the blended wing and body and highly non-planar wings are also covered. The quasi-analytical approach enables designers to compare the results of high-fidelity MDO optimization with lower-fidelity methods which need far less computational effort. Another advantage to this approach is that it can provide answers to “what if” questions rapidly and with little computational cost. Key features: Presents a new fundamental vision on conceptual airplane design optimization Provides an overview of advanced technologies for propulsion and reducing aerodynamic drag Offers insight into the derivation of design sensitivity information Emphasizes design based on first principles Considers pros and cons of innovative configurations Reconsiders optimum cruise performance at transonic Mach numbers Advanced Aircraft Design: Conceptual Design, Analysis and Optimization of Subsonic Civil Airplanes advances understanding of the initial optimization of civil airplanes and is a must-have reference for aerospace engineering students, applied researchers, aircraft design engineers and analysts.
