Book excerpt: Aerosols, small particles suspended in the atmosphere, affect the air quality and climate change. Their distributions can be monitored by satellite remote sensing. Many images of aerosol properties are available from websites as the by-products of the atmospheric correction of the satellite data. Their qualities depend on the accuracy of the atmospheric correction algorithms. The approaches of the atmospheric correction for land and ocean are different due to the large difference of the ground reflectance between land and ocean. A unified atmospheric correction (UAC) approach is developed to improve the accuracy of aerosol products over land, similar to those over ocean. This approach is developed to estimate the aerosol scattering reflectance from satellite data based on a lookup table (LUT) of in situ measured ground reflectance. The results show that the aerosol scattering reflectance can be completely separated from the satellite measured radiance over turbid waters and lands. The accuracy is validated with the mean relative errors of 22.1%. The vertical structures of the aerosols provide a new insight into the role of aerosols in regulating Earth's weather, climate, and air quality.

In addition, they can indirectly affect radiation balance by changing the micro-physical and optical properties of the cloud. The difficulties in accessing the contribution of aerosols to radiative balance are caused partly due to incomplete knowledge of spatiotemporal variabilities in physicochemical and optical properties of aerosols on regional to global scale. Several state-of-the-art instrumentation techniques for ground-based measurements and satellite remote sensing technologies have been developed in past three decades to monitor physicochemical and optical properties of aerosols for a better understanding of radiative balance and feedback mechanisms. Satellite retrievals of moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS), ozone monitoring instrument (OMI), multi-angle imaging spectroradiometer (MISR) are used for this purpose. Ground-based measurements of aerosol properties provide a basis for validation of atmospheric correction procedures and can be used for validation of aerosol models used in atmospheric correction algorithms. This chapter describes in details about the widely used ground- and satellite-based remote sensing instruments for aerosol monitoring.

Book excerpt: The monograph being proposed for the English-speaking research community is concentrated on the atmospheric correction of satellite images as a part of thematic interpretation procedures while processing remote sensing data. For linguistic reasons a large section of the community may have been unaware of the progress made in Russia in this field of science and technology. Meanwhile, Russia was the first country to launch the first artificial satellite in 1957 and to obtain from space for the first time spectra of the Earth's atmosphere in the 1960's. New applications of the radiation transfer theory for the atmosphere underlying surface system appeared first in Russia in the 1970's. Direct and in verse problems of the atmospheric optics were then formulated giving the scientific basis for studies of natural resources from space. Since that time new mathematical treatments for the atmospheric correction procedures have been widely developed in Russia, including both analytical and numerical tech niques to simulate spectral, angular, and spatial distributions of the outgoing radiation in visual and infrared regions. The authors of the book were at the beginning of the scientific approach. A wide range of mathematical im provements to elaborate polinomial approximations for dependencies between atmospheric radiation field and parameters of space surveying was due to the necessity to process satellite images in real time using special software of ex isted computer means for the studies.

Book excerpt: Every year a large amount of aerosols released from wildfires and dust storms into the atmosphere may have potential impacts on the climate, environment, and air quality. Detecting smoke and dust aerosols and monitoring their movements and evolutions in a timely manner is a very meaningful task. Satellite remote sensing has been demonstrated as an effective means for the observation of these two kinds of aerosols. In this dissertation, an algorithm based on the multi-spectral technique for detecting smoke and dust aerosols is developed, by combining measurements of MODoderate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) reflective solar bands and thermal emissive bands. Data from smoke/dust events occurred during last several years are collected visually as training data for spectral and statistical analyses. According to the spectral curves of various scene types (aerosols, cloud, vegetation, and water et al.), a series of spectral bands is selected jointly or separately and corresponding thresholds are defined for scene classification step by step. The multi-spectral algorithm is applied mainly to detect smoke plumes in the United States and dust storms in Asia. The detection results are validated not only visually with MODIS true color images, but also quantitatively with products of, Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO). The validations show that this multi-spectral detection algorithm is suitable to monitor smoke and dust in the selected study areas. The accuracy is quite good in most cases. Additionally, this algorithm can be used to detect smoke and dust aerosols at the areas near clouds even mixed with clouds. Detection of dust aerosol with multi-sensor satellite remote sensing measurements, MODIS and CALIPSO, is also performed tentatively in this dissertation. After spatial registration, the dust layers are identified combining CALIPSO Vertical Feature Mask product and measurements of MODIS brightness temperature difference between 12 and 11-[micrometre] bands. Based on detecting results, the three-dimension information of dust aerosols is summarized. Additionally, the impacts of the mis-registration on the L1B data and dust aerosol detection results are assessed. The relative errors caused by mis-registration on L1B data are generally less than a few tenths of a percent. The impacts on dust detection results are relative large, usually has the trend as negligible at the homogeneous and semi-homogeneous areas, but large at the non-homogeneous areas.
