Book Aerodynamic Stability and Control wind Tunnel Data Correlation

Download or read book Aerodynamic Stability and Control wind Tunnel Data Correlation written by G. R. Casteel and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general objective was to collect and analyze aerodynamic stability and control data for the XV-4B, XV-5A, and P-1127 VTOL configurations. Correlation and analysis of existing model data were made to investigate hover and transition characteristics. Particular emphasis was placed on the aerodynamic power effects, sometimes referred to as interference effects. Other areas of investigation were sometimes referred to as interference effects. Other areas of investigation were nondimensional coefficients used to present VTOL data and wind tunnel test techniques. Wind tunnel tests were conducted using an inlet only model and a jet only model to investigate special test and analysis problems for these components. The agreement between different sets of XV-4B model data was, in general, found to be poor. However, the nondimensional coefficients used by Lockheed to reduce to XV-4B model data appear to be valid parameters for this category of VTOL airplane. The jet entrainment flow was shown by experiment to be the primary cause of the XV-4B power effects, and the XV-4B jet path was experimentally and theoretically determined.

Book A Wind tunnel Evaluation of Analytical Techniques for Predicting Static Stability and Control Characteristics of Flexible Aircraft

Download or read book A Wind tunnel Evaluation of Analytical Techniques for Predicting Static Stability and Control Characteristics of Flexible Aircraft written by Irving Abel and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental evaluation of analytical techniques for predicting certain stability and control characteristics of a large flexible aircraft is presented. Analytical methods based on both the model approach and flexibility influence coefficients are developed to predict the aerodynamic characteristics of a flexible airplane. These methods are then applied to a flexibly scaled model of a supersonic transport configuration. Comparisons of wind-tunnel data, calculations based on the model approach, and flexibility influence coefficients are presented over the Mach number range from 0.6 to 2.7. An examination of the results obtained from this study indicates that both analytical techniques predict reasonably well the effect of flexibility on the basic longitudinal characteristics and that both techniques give generally comparable results.

Book Full scale Wind tunnel Tests of a Small Unpowered Jet Aircraft with a T Tail

Download or read book Full scale Wind tunnel Tests of a Small Unpowered Jet Aircraft with a T Tail written by Paul T. Soderman and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aerodynamic characteristics of a full scale executive type jet transport aircraft with a T-tail were investigated in a 40 x 80 ft (12.2 by 24.4 meter) wind tunnel (subsonic). Static, longitudinal, and lateral stability, and control characteristics were determined at angles of attack from -2 deg to 42 deg. The aircraft wing had 13 deg of sweep and an aspect ratio of 5.02. The aircraft was tested power off with various wing leading- and trailing-edge high lift devices. The basic configuration was tested with and without such components as engine nacelles, wing tip tanks, and empannage. Hinge-moment data were obtained and downwash angles in the horizontal-tail plane location were calculated. The data were obtained at Reynolds numbers of 4.1 million and 8.7 million based on mean aerodynamic chord. The model had static longitudinal stability through initial stall. Severe tail buffet occurred near the angle of attack for maximum lift. Above initial stall the aircraft had pronounced pitch-up, characteristic of T-tail configurations. A stable trim point was possible at angles of attack between 30 deg and 40 deg (depending on c.g. location and flap setting). Hinge-moment data showed no regions with adverse effects on stick force. Comparisons of wind-tunnel data and flight-test are presented.

Book Correlation of Wind Tunnel and Flight Test Aerodynamic Data for Five V STOL Aircraft

Download or read book Correlation of Wind Tunnel and Flight Test Aerodynamic Data for Five V STOL Aircraft written by David H. Hickey and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The five aircraft tested represent a wide variety of V/STOL concepts. Correlation between the wind-tunnel and flight-test aerodynamic results is generally good when wind-tunnel wall corrections are omitted; in some cases wall corrections are shown to degrade the correlation. The aircraft and wind-tunnel geometry are related to model-tunnel sizing parameters and a VTOL lift parameter, in order to establish tentative sizing criteria for V/STOL wind-tunnel testing with small wall effects. The report is one of the series 515-522 of papers presented at the 27th meeting of the AGARD Flight Mechanics Panel, held 11-12 October 1965 in Rome, Italy. (Author).

Book Comparison of Wind tunnel and Flight Measurements of Stability and Control Characteristics of a Douglas A 26 Airplane

Download or read book Comparison of Wind tunnel and Flight Measurements of Stability and Control Characteristics of a Douglas A 26 Airplane written by Gerald G. Kayten and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: Stability and control characteristics determined from tests in the Langley 19-foot pressure tunnel of a 0.2375-scale model of the Douglas XA-26 airplane are compared with those measured in flight tests of a Douglas A-26B airplane. Agreement regarding static longitudinal stability as indicated by the elevator-fixed neutral points and by the variation of elevator deflection in both straight and turning flight was found to be good except at speeds approaching the stall. At these low speeds the airplane possessed noticeably improved stability, which was attributed to pronounced stalling at the root of the producion wing. The pronounced root stalling did not occur on the smooth, well-faired model wing. Elevator tab effectiveness determined from model tests agreed well with flight-test tab effectiveness, but control-force variations with speed and acceleration were not in good agreement. Although some discrepancy was introduced by the absence of a seal on the model elevator and by small differences in the determination of elevator deflections, correlation in control-force characteristics was also influenced by the effects of fabric distortion at high speeds and by small construction dissimilarities such as differences in trailing-edge angle. Except for the wave-off condition, in which the tunnel results indicated rudder-force reversal at a higher speed than the flight tests, agreement in both rudder-fixed and rudder-free static directional stability was good. Model and airplane indications of stick-fixed and stick-free dihedral effect were also in good agreement, although some differences in geometric dihedral may have existed because of wing bending in flight.

Book A Wind tunnel Test Technique for Measuring the Dynamic Rotary Stability Derivatives Including the Cross Derivatives at High Mach Numbers

Download or read book A Wind tunnel Test Technique for Measuring the Dynamic Rotary Stability Derivatives Including the Cross Derivatives at High Mach Numbers written by Benjamin H. Beam and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is described for measuring the dynamic stability derivatives of a model airplane in a wind tunnel. The characteristics features of this system are that single-degree-of-freedom oscillations were used to obtain combinations of rolling, yawing, and pitching motions; that the oscillations were excited and controlled by velocity feedback which permitted operation under conditions unfavorable for more conventional types of oscillatory testing; and that data processing was greatly simplified by using analog computer elements in the strain-gage circuitry.
