Book Methodology for Sensitivity Analysis Approximate Analysis and Design Optimization in Cfd for Multidisciplinary Applications Computational Fluid Dynamics

Download or read book Methodology for Sensitivity Analysis Approximate Analysis and Design Optimization in Cfd for Multidisciplinary Applications Computational Fluid Dynamics written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-08 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental equations of aerodynamic sensitivity analysis and approximate analysis for the two dimensional thin layer Navier-Stokes equations are reviewed, and special boundary condition considerations necessary to apply these equations to isolated lifting airfoils on 'C' and 'O' meshes are discussed in detail. An efficient strategy which is based on the finite element method and an elastic membrane representation of the computational domain is successfully tested, which circumvents the costly 'brute force' method of obtaining grid sensitivity derivatives, and is also useful in mesh regeneration. The issue of turbulence modeling is addressed in a preliminary study. Aerodynamic shape sensitivity derivatives are efficiently calculated, and their accuracy is validated on two viscous test problems, including: (1) internal flow through a double throat nozzle, and (2) external flow over a NACA 4-digit airfoil. An automated aerodynamic design optimization strategy is outlined which includes the use of a design optimization program, an aerodynamic flow analysis code, an aerodynamic sensitivity and approximate analysis code, and a mesh regeneration and grid sensitivity analysis code. Application of the optimization methodology to the two test problems in each case resulted in a new design having a significantly improved performance in the aerodynamic response of interest. Book Overview of Sensitivity Analysis and Shape Optimization for Complex Aerodynamic Configurations

Download or read book Overview of Sensitivity Analysis and Shape Optimization for Complex Aerodynamic Configurations written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a brief overview of some of the more recent advances in steady aerodynamic shape-design sensitivity analysis and optimization, based on advanced computational fluid dynamics. The focus here is on those methods particularly well- suited to the study of geometrically complex configurations and their potentially complex associated flow physics. When nonlinear state equations are considered in the optimization process, difficulties are found in the application of sensitivity analysis. Some techniques for circumventing such difficulties are currently being explored and are included here. Attention is directed to methods that utilize automatic differentiation to obtain aerodynamic sensitivity derivatives for both complex configurations and complex flow physics. Various examples of shape-design sensitivity analysis for unstructured-grid computational fluid dynamics algorithms are demonstrated for different formulations of the sensitivity equations. Finally, the use of advanced, unstructured-grid computational fluid dynamics in multidisciplinary analyses and multidisciplinary sensitivity analyses within future optimization processes is recommended and encouraged. Book Simulation driven Aerodynamic Design Using Variable fidelity Models

Download or read book Simulation driven Aerodynamic Design Using Variable fidelity Models written by Leifur Leifsson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer simulations is a fundamental tool of the design process in many engineering disciplines including aerospace engineering. However, although high-fidelity numerical models are accurate, they can be computationally expensive with evaluation time for a single design as long as hours, days or even weeks. Simulation-driven design using conventional optimization techniques may be therefore prohibitive. This book explores the alternative: performing computationally efficient design using surrogate-based optimization, where the high-fidelity model is replaced by its computationally cheap but still reasonably accurate representation: a surrogate. The emphasis is on physics-based surrogates. Application-wise, the focus is on aerodynamics and the methods and techniques described in the book are demonstrated using aerodynamic shape optimization cases. Applications in other engineering fields are also demonstrated.State-of-the-art techniques and a depth of coverage never published before make this a unique and essential book for all researchers working in aerospace and other engineering areas and dealing with optimization, computationally expensive design problems, and simulation-driven design.

Book Aerodynamic Optimization Using High fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics

Download or read book Aerodynamic Optimization Using High fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics written by Hamidreza Karbasian and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, we demonstrate the ability to perform large-scale PDE-constrained optimizations using Large Eddy Simulation (LES). We first outline the challenges associated with performing gradient-based optimization using LES, specifically chaotic divergence of the sensitivity functions. We then demonstrate that shape optimization using LES and Mesh Adaptive Direct Search Method (MADS) is feasible for aerodynamic design. Next, we introduce a Dynamic Polynomial Approximation (DPA) procedure, which allows the high-order solution polynomial representation used by the flow solver to be increased, or decreased, depending on the poll size being used by MADS. This allows rapid convergence towards the optimal design space using lower-fidelity simulations, followed by an automatic transition to higher-fidelity simulations when close to the optimal design point. Additionally, this study proposes a new physics-constrained data-driven approach for sensitivity analysis and uncertainty quantification of large-scale chaotic dynamical systems. Unlike conventional sensitivity analysis, the proposed approach can manipulate the unsteady sensitivity function (i.e., tangent) for PDE-constrained optimizations. In this new approach, high-dimensional governing equations from physical space are transformed into an unphysical space (i.e., Hilbert space) to develop a closure model in the form of a Reduced-Order Model (ROM). Afterward, a new data sampling approach is proposed to build a data-driven approach for this framework. To compute sensitivities, Least-Squares Shadowing (LSS) minimization is applied to the ROM. It is shown that the proposed approach can capture sensitivities for large-scale chaotic dynamical systems, where Finite Difference (FD) approximations fail. Therefore, we expect that implementing the proposed optimization approach can be applied to large-scale chaotic problems, such as turbulent flows, and this approach significantly reduces computational cost and data storage requirements.

Book Recent Development of Aerodynamic Design Methodologies

Download or read book Recent Development of Aerodynamic Design Methodologies written by Kozo Fujii and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has made remarkable progress in the last two decades and is becoming an important, if not inevitable, analytical tool for both fundamental and practical fluid dynamics research. The analysis of flow fields is important in the sense that it improves the researcher's understanding of the flow features. CFD analysis also indirectly helps the design of new aircraft and/or spacecraft. However, design methodologies are the real need for the development of aircraft or spacecraft. They directly contribute to the design process and can significantly shorten the design cycle. Although quite a few publications have been written on this subject, most of the methods proposed were not used in practice in the past due to an immature research level and restrictions due to the inadequate computing capabilities. With the progress of high-speed computers, the time has come for such methods to be used practically. There is strong evidence of a growing interest in the development and use of aerodynamic inverse design and optimization techniques. This is true, not only for aerospace industries, but also for any industries requiring fluid dynamic design. This clearly shows the matured engineering need for optimum aerodynamic shape design methodologies. Therefore, it seems timely to publish a book in which eminent researchers in this area can elaborate on their research efforts and discuss it in conjunction with other efforts.

Book Aerodynamic Shape Optimization Using Control Theory

Download or read book Aerodynamic Shape Optimization Using Control Theory written by James John Reuther and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "Aerodynamic shape design has long persisted as a difficult scientific challenge due [sic] its highly nonlinear flow physics and daunting geometric complexity. However, with the emergence of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) it has become possible to make accurate predictions of flows which are not dominated by viscous effects. It is thus worthwhile to explore the extension of CFD methods for flow analysis to the treatment of aerodynamic shape design. Two new aerodynamic shape design methods are developed which combine existing CFD technology, optimal control theory, and numerical optimization techniques. Flow analysis methods for the potential flow equation and the Euler equations form the basis of the two respective design methods. In each case, optimal control theory is used to derive the adjoint differential equations, the solution of which provides the necessary gradient information to a numerical optimization method much more efficiently then [sic] by conventional finite differencing. Each technique uses a quasi-Newton numerical optimization algorithm to drive an aerodynamic objective function toward a minimum. An analytic grid perturbation method is developed to modify body fitted meshes to accommodate shape changes during the design process. Both Hicks-Henne perturbation functions and B-spline control points are explored as suitable design variables. The new methods prove to be computationally efficient and robust, and can be used for practical airfoil design including geometric and aerodynamic constraints. Objective functions are chosen to allow both inverse design to a target pressure distribution and wave drag minimization. Several design cases are presented for each method illustrating its practicality and efficiency. These include non-lifting and lifting airfoils operating at both subsonic and transonic conditions."

Book Methodology for Sensitivity Analysis Approximate Analysis and Design Optimization in Cfd for Multidisciplinary Applications

This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study involving advanced fluid flow codes, an incremental iterative formulation (also known as the delta or correction form) together with the well-known spatially-split approximate factorization algorithm, is presented for solving the very large sparse systems of linear equations which are associated with aerodynamic sensitivity analysis. For smaller 2D problems, a direct method can be applied to solve these linear equations in either the standard or the incremental form, in which case the two are equivalent. Iterative methods are needed for larger 2D and future 3D applications, however, because direct methods require much more computer memory than is currently available. Iterative methods for solving these equations in the standard form are generally unsatisfactory due to an ill-conditioning of the coefficient matrix; this problem can be overcome when these equations are cast in the incremental form. These and other benefits are discussed. The methodology is successfully implemented and tested in 2D using an upwind, cell-centered, finite volume formulation applied to the thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations. Results are presented for two sample airfoil problems: (1) subsonic low Reynolds number laminar flow; and (2) transonic high Reynolds number turbulent flow. Taylor, Arthur C., III and Hou, Gene W.
