Book Development of Test Methods for Advanced Recovery Systems

Download or read book Development of Test Methods for Advanced Recovery Systems written by B. A. Engstrom and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in 1957, during investigations of problems associated with re-entry bodies, a series of nose cones was successfully recovered after ballistic missile flights. The first of these recoveries, on August 8, 1957, was of the scaled down version of the Jupiter, or the Jupiter "C" missile. This test was followed by equally successful recoveries on 12 May 1958 and again on 17 July 1958 of the full scale Jupiter missile. The data collected on these tests were of vital importance in the development of functional re-entry nose cones. The recovery systems used on these tests would not have been possible had it not been for the preceding years of basic research aimed at extending the state of the art of parachutes and parachute systems.

Book Advanced Methods of Deceleration and Recovery with Expandable and Inflatable Systems

Download or read book Advanced Methods of Deceleration and Recovery with Expandable and Inflatable Systems written by Frederick J. Stimler and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goodyear's capability in the utilization of packageable materials for aerodynamic deceleration and recovery is reviewed. General applications for packageable materials are presented starting with the airship and ending with space vehicles and components. Past, present, and future decelerator development at Goodyear Aircraft Corporation is discussed. Development of materials is discussed including polymeric and metal cloth, high-temperature coatings, AIRMAT technology, cloth laminates, and foams. Problems encountered during packaging, deployment, and inflation are detailed. A review is presented of Goodyear's present and planned capability for testing expandable materials, their fabrication efficiencies, their coating effectiveness, and other physical and structural properties. This document outlines the lecture, shows the slides, and lists references for those wishing further details in special areas.

Book Aerodynamics of the Para sail

Download or read book Aerodynamics of the Para sail written by Edwin D. Vickery and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the objective of this report to review certain steady state aerodynamic characteristics of the Para-Sail parachute obtained from full scale drop tests (Ref 1), and from small scale wind tunnel studies (Ref 2 to 5). A correlation is made between the wind tunnel and drop test data, to determine what differences exist, if any, between these two modes of experimentation. Also, in conclusion, an evaluation is made of the performance characteristics of the Para-Sail.

Book Recent Flexible wing Research

Download or read book Recent Flexible wing Research written by Rodger L. Naeseth and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A significant amount of information on all-flexible parawings obtained in recent NASA wind-tunnel and flight investigations in summarized. The characteristics of fully flexible wings of three types are presented. The use of wind-tunnel tests as the basis in several programs leading to flight test work is shown. These programs include a lifting reentry shape and a large-scale test vehicle. Comparisons of wind-tunnel and flight results are made. A method of determining the shape and inertia of a flexible wing in the wind tunnel is described, and the immediate uses of such results in analysis, flight-test, and simulator studies are indicated. The results of a landing-simulator study of the parawing-reentry lifting body are presented.

Book The Design and Development of the Para sail Parachute

Download or read book The Design and Development of the Para sail Parachute written by W. J. Everett and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents in summary form some of the design aspects of the Para-Sail parachute and the developmental work which has been accomplished thru [sic] flight testing during the past three years. During this period the aerodynamic performance has been improved and a high deployment reliability established. As a result of these efforts a wide variety of Para-Sail applications has [sic] developed and new ones are being considered. These applications range from space craft recovery to its [sic] use as a training aid for aircraft crews. At present the number of applications for gliding parachutes concepts appears to be limited only by the imagination.

Book Fibrous Materials for Aerodynamic Decelerators

Download or read book Fibrous Materials for Aerodynamic Decelerators written by William Denney Freeston and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many aerodynamic decelerators under current development require utilization of flexible, textile-like fabrics having high strength at elevated temperatures. To minimize form-drag during launch, these decelerators must have a small pre-deployment volume. Thus, a fabric used in these structures must be capable of being folded, packaged, and subsequently deployed without suffering damage.

Book Quick Divestible Harness

Download or read book Quick Divestible Harness written by Antonio S. Tente and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of World War II, the standard parachute harness was fabricated of cotton webbing and was secured to the wearer by snap fasteners. The invasion of Southern France and Normandy pointed out the need for a parachute harness which could be quickly removed by the parachutist. A development progran resulted in the adoption of a parachute incorporating a quick-release box.
