Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AERO-OPTICAL EFFECTS Explore the newest techniques and technologies used to mitigate the effects of air flow over airborne laser platforms Aero-Optical Effects: Physics, Analysis and Mitigation delivers a detailed and insightful introduction to aero-optics and fully describes the current understanding of the physical causes of aero-optical effects from turbulent flows at different speeds. In addition to presenting a thorough discussion of instrumentation, data reduction, and data analysis, the authors examine various approaches to aero-optical effect mitigation using both flow control and adaptive optics approaches. The book explores the sources, characteristics, measurement approaches, and mitigation means to reduce aero-optics wavefront error. It also examines the precise measurements of aero-optical effects and the instrumentation of aero-optics. Flow control for aero-optical applications is discussed, as are approaches like passive flow control, active and hybrid flow control, and closed-loop flow control. Readers will benefit from discussions of the applications of aero-optics in relation to fields like directed energy and high-speed communications. Readers will also enjoy a wide variety of useful features and topics, including: Comprehensive discussions of both aero-effects, which include the effects that air flow has over a beam director mounted on an aircraft, and aero-optics, which include atmospheric effects that degrade the ability of an airborne laser to focus a beam A treatment of air buffeting and its effects on beam stabilization and jitter An analysis of mitigating impediments to the use of high-quality laser beams from aircraft as weapons or communications systems Adaptive optics compensation for aero-optical disturbances Perfect for researchers, engineers, and scientists involved with laser weapon and beam control systems, Aero-Optical Effects: Physics, Analysis and Mitigation will also earn a place in the libraries of principal investigators in defense contract work and independent research and development.

Book Numerical Methods in Aero Optics

Download or read book Numerical Methods in Aero Optics written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research project was concerned with the development of rigorous mathematical models, computational algorithms and high performance computer implementations for aero-optics imaging applications. The objectives of this project were to conduct research on inverse problems arising in the areas of: (1) adaptive optics deformable mirror control, (2) image post processing using blind deconvolution techniques and phase retrieval, as well as; and (3) accurate corrections to phase aberration problems encountered in radar systems. The work has applications in defense, including the airborne laser weapons program (ABL), space surveillance, and in civilian technology, including astronomical, industrial, and medical imaging. The project resulted in a variety of new technologies in the form of robust and efficient algorithms, as well as their implementations. Parallelizations of the computational algorithms were investigated and implemented on the IBM SP2 supercomputer at the Air Force Maui High Performance Computing Center. These codes were extensively tested on real optical imaging data made available by Air Force researchers. Packaging the results of our research into reliable software further facilitates the timely and effective transfer of vital new knowledge to DoD research laboratories and to industry. There were considerable collaborative research and transition activities at Air Force Laboratories during the course of this twenty month project. Several visits by principal investigator Plemmons were made to the Air Force Research Laboratory at Kirtland AFB, NM, for the purpose of close interaction with Air Force researchers on our grant projects.

Book Numerical Simulation Advanced Techniques for Science and Engineering

Download or read book Numerical Simulation Advanced Techniques for Science and Engineering written by Ali Soofastaei and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical simulation is a powerful tool used in various fields of science and engineering to model complex systems and predict their behavior. It involves developing mathematical models that describe the behavior of a system and using computer algorithms to solve these models numerically. By doing so, researchers and engineers can study the behavior of a system in detail, which may only be possible with analytical methods. Numerical simulation has many advantages over traditional analytical methods. It allows researchers and engineers to study complex systems’ behavior in detail and predict their behavior in different scenarios. It also allows for the optimization of systems and the identification of design flaws before they are built. However, numerical simulation has its limitations. It requires significant computational resources, and the accuracy of the results depends on the quality of the mathematical models and the discretization methods used. Nevertheless, numerical simulation remains a valuable tool in many fields and its importance is likely to grow as computational resources become more powerful and widely available. Numerical simulation is widely used in physics, engineering, computer science, and mathematics. In physics, for example, numerical simulation is used to study the behavior of complex systems such as weather patterns, fluid dynamics, and particle interactions. In engineering, it is used to design and optimize systems such as aircraft, cars, and buildings. In computer science, numerical simulation models and optimization algorithms and data structures. In mathematics, it is used to study complex mathematical models and to solve complex equations. This book familiarizes readers with the practical application of the numerical simulation technique to solve complex analytical problems in different industries and sciences.
