Download or read book The Abundance and Distribution of Estuarine Birds in the Strait of Georgia British Columbia written by Robert William Butler and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The present publication follows an earlier report by Vermeer and Butler (1989) that described the physical and biological environment, prey organisms, and ecology of waterbirds in the Strait of Georgia. Here, we compare the year-round abundance, distribution, and energy consumption of birds in five large estuaries and one small urban estuary in the Strait of Georgia. We use the traditional definition of an estuary: the lower deltaic portion of a river and the nearby shallow waters in the freshwater plume"--Introd.

Download or read book The North American Swans Their Biology and Conservation written by Paul Johnsgard and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among birds, swans are relatively long-lived species and are also among the most strongly monogamous, having prolonged pair and family bonds that strongly influence their reproductive and general social behavior, which, in combination with their beauty and elegance, contribute to the overall high degree of worldwide human interest in them. This volume of more than 59,000 words describes the distributions, ecology, social behavior, and breeding biologies of the four species of swans that breed or have historically bred in North America, including the native trumpeter and tundra swans, the introduced mute swan, and the marginally occurring whooper swan. Also included are 5 distribution maps, 15 drawings, 27 photographs by the author, and a reference section of nearly 1,000 literature citations.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Several wetland classification schemes have been devised to facilitate waterfowl management in North America. These schemes were developed primarily from vegetational, not hydrological, characteristics of wetlands and so do not consider annual changes in slough responses to climatic variability. Here we provide a hydrological scheme that proves to be consistent with Millar's (1976) ecological classification scheme"--Abstract.

Download or read book Declines in Canadian Amphibian Populations written by Christine Annette Bishop and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1991, a workshop was held to examine the data related to declines in Canadian amphibian populations and associated causes and, in particular, to develop a protocol to address the issue. Participants were invited to present reports on the current status of knowledge on amphibians in Canada, particularly species that appear to be threatened. Summaries of this information are presented in this report, along with the factors that may be contributing to fluctuations in amphibian populations. Methodologies and tribulations involved in accurately assessing amphibian population size and recruitment are given. A framework for environmental monitoring was presented and the data needed, both intensive and extensive, was discussed.
