This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muskox are an important and traditional dietary resource in many Arctic communities, while also having economic, sociocultural and environmental importance. Though some muskox populations in North America are known to be decreasing, other populations such as the muskox in the Sahtú and North Slave region are suspected to be growing in numbers and distribution. Here we evaluate the population size; distribution and calf production of muskoxen in the Sahtú as well as examine the population level habitat selection of an Arctic herbivore above and below tree line. In the study area, we estimate a population of 5,793 individuals in the study area (95% CI 3,385-9,912, CV=0.279) with an estimated 5.6% calf percentage. Overall, we found the current population of muskoxen in the Sahtú to be abundant and stable; however, low calf recruitment may indicate a lack of resilience to additional stressors. We highlight the importance of continued and enhanced monitoring of factors affecting muskox populations in the Sahtu at both the individual and population level.

Book excerpt: A caribou and muskox strip transect survey was conducted on northwest Victoria Island between April 14th and May 6th, 2015. There were a total of 2,782 adult muskox (and 139 calves) seen on transect in all four stratums surveyed yielding a population estimate of 14,547 ± 2,593 (95% confident interval) non-calf muskox for the entire area surveyed. Two Peary caribou and 16 wolves were also observed.

Download or read book Distribution and Abundance of Muskoxen in the Beaverhill Lake Area 2000 and the Thelon Wildlife Sanctuary 1994 Northwest Territories written by Anne Gunn (Wildlife manager) and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides details of the two aerial surveys used to describe muskox Ovibos moschatus abundance and distribution in the central barrens, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. The first survey covered the Thelon Wildlife Sanctuary in July and August 1994. The 1994 survey was a stratified transect survey using a float equipped fixed-wing aircraft. After an initial reconnaissance at 13.3% coverage, 3,565 kilometers of the transect were reclassified as the low-density stratum. Three areas were classified as high-density strata and re-flown at 40% coverage. The estimated number of adult muskoxen in the Thelon Wildlife Sanctuary in 1994 was 1,095 281 Standard Error (Coefficient of Variation 0.26) and an average density of 1.8 per 100km2. This estimate was likely conservative. Based on all adults seen, including singles, the percentages of calves were 12.0% on transect and 16.4% off transect. In 2000, a fixed-wing aircraft was used to fly a transect survey with uniform coverage (about 20%) covering an area adjacent to the southwest corner of the Thelon Wildlife Sanctuary and including the southwest part of the Sanctuary. Most of the area had not been previously surveyed for muskoxen. We counted 261 adult muskoxen and estimated 1320 " 183 Standard Error (Coefficient of Variation 0.14) with an average density of 3.19 per 100km2. The proportion of calves on and off transect was 5.5%. The survey suggests that muskox distribution is continuous around the western, southern and eastern Thelon Sanctuary between Muskox Management Unit 02 in the NWT and Muskox Management Unit MX21 in Nunavut. The surveys and sightings suggest that muskox distribution has been spreading southwest during the 1980s and 1990s. We recommend establishing a management unit southwest of the Thelon Wildlife Sanctuary with an annual quota of 11 muskoxen.
