Book Aerial Survey of Muskoxen Ovibos Moschatus and Peary Caribou Rangifer Tarandus Pearyi on Northwest Victoria Island May 2019

Download or read book Aerial Survey of Muskoxen Ovibos Moschatus and Peary Caribou Rangifer Tarandus Pearyi on Northwest Victoria Island May 2019 written by Tracy M. Davison and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An aerial caribou and muskox strip transect survey was conducted on northwest Victoria Island between May 8th and May 24th, 2019. Two Cessna 206 fixed-wing aircraft were used for the survey. The survey area was divided into four strata or blocks, named A, B, C and E. Strata A, B and C had been used in previous surveys of this area. There were 30 adult caribou observed on transect and 14 adult caribou observed off transect. The majority of caribou were observed in survey stratum C except for one group of 14 caribou observed in survey stratum A. The population estimate for adult caribou in survey stratum A was 78±136 (95% Confidence Interval (CI)). The population estimate for adult caribou in survey stratum C was 98±91 (95% CI). These estimates have a high variance so should be used with caution, and overall caribou numbers remain low. There were 962 adult and 100 calf muskoxen observed on transect and 1,482 muskoxen observed off transect lines. The population estimate for survey strata A, B and C combined was 5,550±1,672 (95% CI) adult muskox. This is lower than the 2015 estimate for these strata and indicates an annual decline of 16%. The population estimate for survey stratum E was 216±206 (95% CI) adult muskox.

Book Muskox Survey on Southwestern Victoria Island March 1983

Download or read book Muskox Survey on Southwestern Victoria Island March 1983 written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a 1983 strip transect aerial survey of muskox on part of south-west Victoria Island, Northwest Territories. The survey area covered about 14,800 square kilometres from the Richardson Islands to Lady Richardson Bay and north to latitude 69 degrees 30 minutes. Results are presented regarding muskox numbers, herd size, population density, and estimated total population in the study area. Although the survey was intended specifically for muskox, caribou were also counted and an estimate is provided of their total population.

Book Productivity of Peary Caribou and Muskoxen on Banks and Melville Islands NT July 2004

Download or read book Productivity of Peary Caribou and Muskoxen on Banks and Melville Islands NT July 2004 written by J. A. Nagy and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We observed a total of 4,689 muskoxen including 4,426 adults, 82 yearlings, and 181 calves. Calves and yearlings represented approximately 4% and 2% of all muskoxen observed, respectively. The proportion of calves in the muskoxen population observed during July 2004 was the lowest documented on Banks Island since 1992. The low proportion of yearlings indicates that recruitment to the population in 2004 was very low. The low proportion of calves indicates that recruitment to the population in 2005 will also be low. A total of 471 muskox carcasses were found, with approximately 84% of these located on the northern portion of the island. This suggests that the most severe icing conditions occurred in this area. We believe that the underlying cause of the mortalities observed was malnutrition resulting from the severe icing condition on the island.

Book Muskox Ovibos Moschatus Habitat Associations and Interactions with Caribou Rangifer Tarandus

Download or read book Muskox Ovibos Moschatus Habitat Associations and Interactions with Caribou Rangifer Tarandus written by Laurence Carter and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Muskox (Ovibos moschatus) are a large-bodied arctic herbivore that occupy habitats used seasonally by migratory caribou (Rangifer tarandus). Muskox were reintroduced to the North Slope of Alaska in 1970 and mixed-sex groups have been reported in the Yukon North Slope and the Richardson Mountains since 1985. Their reintroduction has sparked concerns from local hunters and community members worried about the impact of muskox on caribou populations and vegetation. This thesis represents an ecological assessment of competition potential and habitat segregation among two arctic ungulates and community-based research that addresses local concerns and knowledge priorities. In the first part of the thesis, I use satellite collar data from muskox and caribou to analyze their spatial and habitat overlap through range overlap, encounter rates, and resource selection functions. Range overlap was at its highest in the spring and summer months, but less than 1% of collared caribou encountered a muskox during that period. Habitat overlap was minimized through differential selection of elevation, distance to water, and abundant tussock habitat. In the second part of the thesis, I use ground-based vegetationsampling to characterize fine-scale muskox-vegetation associations, determining whether there arepositive or negative associations between muskox use and vegetation presence and abundance. Positive associations between muskox use and vegetation attributes were deemed to reflect a pattern of fine-scale selection, and negative associations were deemed to be the reflection of muskox herbivory impacts. Positive associations were found between muskox use and lichen, willow, and graminoid abundance and presence, an indication that within land covers, the relationship between muskox use and vegetation is mostly driven by selection rather than by herbivory. Collectively, this research reveals that in the Yukon North Slope and Richardson Mountains, the reintroduced and expanding population of muskox i) has low encounter rates and differential habitat use with caribou and ii) has selection patterns that are quantifiable at a large and at a fine-scale"--
