Book U S Foreign Policy in Southern Africa

Download or read book U S Foreign Policy in Southern Africa written by Richard John Mahlum and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is designed to demonstrate analytically three propositions: First, that the U.S. has maintained a foreign policy toward southern Africa which has been unevenly implemented and even neglected by various administrations, due to perceptual differences about Africa and due to other manifest priorities on the agenda of U.S. foreign policy concerns. Second, that a major determinant of U.S. policy in southern Africa has been the concern over potential superpower rivalry and intervention in the region as a dangerous and unwarranted element in the U.S.-Soviet competitive relationship. Third, that an overreaction in the U.S. to the perceived Soviet threat and a dramatic reinstitution of the East-West perspective in U.S. foreign policy priorities could lead the U.S. to set aside the regional approach toward southern Africa that has marked the Carter Administration's African policy since 1977. This development may create a situation of incipient crisis for future U.S. relations in the region. (Author).

Download or read book The Half War written by Robert P Haffa Jr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a strategic, organizational, and logistical analysis in a historical context of the planning of conventional forces to meet a limited contingency. The central question is: Why, from 1960 to 1982, did the U.S. fail to construct a coherent limited contingency force? Analysis of a series of comparative case studies reveals that the strategic concept to the "half war," or limited contingency, was never articulated adequately enough to support specific force planning. Organizations designed to oversee and command limited contingency forces, fragmented by interservice rivalries and the absence of joint doctrine, lacked multiservice composition and a unified command structure. A search for economy in limited contingency forces seemed justified by illusions about their capabilities. Low budgetary priority and Congressional perceptions that enhanced U.S. rapid deployment capabilities would encourage U.S. global intervention contributed to the lack of logistical and mobility systems dedicated to them. The wider intent of this study is to shed light on the general purpose force planning process and to suggest policy guidance as the United States once again embarks on a major conventional force planning initiative. Rather than being trapped by the past, new efforts to meet vital U.S. military interests below the nuclear threshold must identify "half war" planning contingencies, structure unified commands capable of directing tailored conventional forces in specific theaters, and provide adequate strategic mobility systems.

Book Defending Arabia

Download or read book Defending Arabia written by J.E. Peterson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The defence of the Gulf has been a vital strategic concern for close on 100 years. The British first became involved in the Gulf to protect the sea routes to India and with the development of international air routes the Gulf became a crucial staging post. This book, first published in 1986, surveys the strategic issues in the defence of the Gulf from the earliest British involvement up to the Iraq-Iran war. It examines the British retreat from the Gulf and the imperial vestiges that were left behind. It considers the way in which American interests in the Gulf came to replace British interests and it analyses how American foreign policy has responded to this additional responsibility. The book also investigates the regional concerns of Gulf security and the intra-regional conflicts that have erupted in the Iraq-Iran war.

Book The Impact of Soviet Ethnicity and Demographic Changes on Soviet Foreign Policy

Download or read book The Impact of Soviet Ethnicity and Demographic Changes on Soviet Foreign Policy written by Patricia Weathers Wyatt and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines Soviet ethnic and national problems resulting from the gradual demographic shifts presently underway. It considers the impact of the shift from a Russian majority in a Russian dominated society, to the Russians becoming only one large minority group among many. The tensions that will increasingly strain the Soviet system as a result of the demographic changes and the complex problems with which the new Kremlin leadership must deal are discussed in relation to Soviet foreign policy. A major problem of the coming decades will be how the leadership attempts to resolve these changes. The nationality probelms of the Soviet Union may not intrinsically be momentous, but are curcial for their potentially exacerbating effects on Soviet foreign policy. (Author).

Book The Persian Gulf and the West RLE Iran D

Download or read book The Persian Gulf and the West RLE Iran D written by Charles Kupchan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2012-04-27 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a broadly comparative and historical re-examination of the fundamental strategic dilemmas that confront the Western world in the Persian Gulf region. This systematic study of how the West has defined and dealt with its security interests in this region reveals three central strategic dilemmas: strategy versus capability, globalism versus regionalism, and unilateralism versus collectivism. The first part of the book focuses on US policy with particular emphasis on the Iranian Revolution and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The author explains why there has been a persistent gap between American perceptions of the Middle East and the political and strategic realities of the region. The second part of the book examines the frustrated efforts of NATO members to form a cooperative response to their collective interests in the region.
