Book excerpt: The engineering firm of Holmes & Narver, Inc., AEC Facilities Division, was engaged by the Division of Biology and Medicine, USAEC, Washington, D.C., to conduct an underground group-shelter study. Specifically, the shelter tested in Operation Plumbbob was to be refined and improved. In addition to the refinement study, working plans, specifications, bills of materials, and a three-dimensional model were developed to enable the Atomic Energy Commission to obtain without delay realistic local cost estimates for construction of shelters of this type. Thus, technical information and details relative to a tested protective structure for both emergency and peacetime applications are made available. Presented here is a group shelter of conceptual design and size for twofold use: (1) emergency shelter and (2) normal peacetime activities. The adaptability of the shelter to peacetime activities increases its attractiveness from an economic viewpoint. It also improves the emergency potential because the occupants will become familiar with the shelter and because a structure in regular use will have regular maintenance. Figures 1 through 3 are plan views of the shelter; Figs. 4 through 7 are photographs of the shelter model. Although this engineering study has been made to satisfy an Atomic Energy Commission responsibility, it is hoped that the results will be useful to other organizations and groups interested in protective structures.

Book Shelter Plans Anthology 2

Download or read book Shelter Plans Anthology 2 written by Guy Montag and published by Loose Cannon. This book was released on 2024-04-23 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More Shelter Designs Since the dawn of the Cold War in the 1950's people have sought ways to protect themselves from the specter of global thermonuclear war. Both the private sector and the U.S. government responded with plans for home bomb/fallout shelters. In Volume Two we document more classic Dept. of Defense plans, Atomic Energy Commission, and even Dept of Agriculture shelters designs intend for farmers and dairymen. Most include plan drawings, material lists, and basic construction details. Plans in this volume include: ⦁ A.E.C. Group Shelter Report ⦁ Dept. of Defense Family Shelters (H-7) ⦁ DEPT of Agriculture Plans: Farm Shelter #910 Dairy barn fallout shelter #943 Bunker type shelter for beef cattle #947 Shelter for Six People #948 Potato Storage/Shelter #949 Storm / Fallout Shelter #950 Barn shelter for 50 cows #989 Be prepared with your own shelter; for protection from tornadoes OR worst case...even fallout. ALSO: See our other books on fallout shelters, "Shelter Plans Anthology 1" and "Expedient Shelter Construction".

Book Extended and Point source Radiometric Program

Download or read book Extended and Point source Radiometric Program written by Francis John Davis and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extended-source calibration area was set up in the Nevada Test Site area to encourage a standardization of airborne radiometric instrumentation among several government agencies. and private companies. A simulated plane-source array was laid out with positions at 100-ft intervals in the form of a square 2000 ft on a side. For ground measurements a smaller square array of 100 positions at 10-ft intervals was placed in the center of the large array. Two sets of sources were used in the array. Cobalt-60 and cesium-137 sources of 4.5 and 15 mc, respectively, were available for the large array and sources one hundredth of these values in the smaller array. Point sources of Co(exp 60), Cs(exp 137), and I(exp 131) of the order of 2 curies each were available for comparison with the area sources. Measurements 3 ft above the area sources indicated 200 micronr/hr for Co(exp 60) and 225 micronr/hr for Cs(exp 137). Four government agencies and one private company participated in an intercalibration exercise during November 1960. Various types and sizes of aircraft from a Cessna 172 to a Douglas Dc-3 were used. Various instrumentation devices, mostly scintillation type detectors, were tested. Flights ranging from 100- to 1000-ft altitude included background measurements, instrument calibration, intercalibration, proof-testing equipment, comparison of point- and area-source measurements, measurements of air attenuation and buildup of gamma radiation, and gamma-ray spectral measurements.
