Book excerpt: "[...]silent, resolute and knit in the conflict of will; they stirred not a hand nor a foot; there was only a still quivering now and then as of intense effort, but they made no other movement. Their heads were bent forward slightly, their arms folded, their bodies straight, rigid, and inclined slightly backwards from each other like two spokes of a gigantic wheel. His face was archetypal; the abstract passion which eluded me in the features of many people I knew, was here declared, exultant, defiant, giantesque; it seem to leap like fire, to be free. In this face I was close to the legendary [...]"

Download or read book The National Being Some Thoughts on an Irish Polity written by George William Russell and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-12-19 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'National Being: Some Thoughts on an Irish Polity', George William Russell reflects on the birth of the State of Ireland in the midst of World War I and the challenges it faced. He argues that a nation's external circumstances are a measure of its inner life, and therefore, building a civilization worthy of Ireland's struggles requires a focus on both the body and soul of the national being. To do this, he believes that the quality of thought engendered in the national being must be of the highest caliber, with a focus on original principles discovered to be fundamental in Irish character. Only then can Ireland achieve true national ideals and build a civilization that is majestic and worthy of respect. Russell's reflections offer a starting point for a deeper meditation on what it means to be Irish and what kind of civilization the people of Ireland want to create.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Talking to the Gods explores the linkages between the imaginative literature and the occult beliefs and practices of four writers who were members of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. William Butler Yeats, Arthur Machen, Algernon Blackwood, and Dion Fortune were all members of the occult organization for various periods from 1890 to 1930. Yeats, of course, is both a canonical and well-loved poet. Machen is revered as a master of the weird tale. Blackwood's work dealing with the supernatural was popular during the first half of the twentieth century and has been influential in the development of the fantasy genre. Fortune's books are acknowledged as harbingers of trends in second-wave feminist spirituality. Susan Johnston Graf examines practices, beliefs, and ideas engendered within the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and demonstrates how these are manifest in each author's work, including Yeats's major theoretical work, A Vision.
