Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advice to Parents, Containing Directions How to Perform the Duties Which They Owe Their Children: With Some Motives Exciting Thereunto The two following small Treatises, not much known in this country, were lately put into my hands for perusal, and seem well calculated to excite the attention of Christians to the important subjects considered in them. In the first, the duty of parents, in regard to the religious education of their children, is stated in a number pertinent Directions, perspicaciously expressed, well explained, and enforced by Scripture arguments and motives. The admonitions and incitements employed in pressing a duty of such vast importance, and alas! so commonly neglected, appear peculiarly seasonable. - And very considerable assistance in the discharge of it may be derived from the serious perusal of the directions referred to, as illustrated by the Author. The subject of the Second Piece is no less important and the instructions given, relative to it, seem equally necessary, in the present state of religion, at least in this part of the world. The excellency of Gospel Ordinances is demonstrated from a variety of topics, well adapted to impress the minds of such as entertain a due veneration for the Holy Scriptures. And the sin and danger of neglecting these ordinances are evinced by such considerations, and exhibited in such an affecting light, as will, it is hoped, reach conviction to attentive readers, and prove a mean of awakening many, who have hitherto been in a great degree, insensible to the concerns of their souls, to lay to heart the thing* which belong to their eternal peace.
