Book excerpt: Prior to 1993, redfish in Subarea 4 and Division 3P (Gulf of St. Lawrence, Scotian Shelf, Bay of Fundy, & southern Newfoundland) were managed as three units. Subsequent implementation of three new units in 1993 resulted in a change in fishing pattern in the Laurentian Channel unit. This report presents information relevant to the provision of advice for that unit, which comprises subdivisions 3Ps4VsWfgj and 3Pn4Vn (southern Newfoundland, Cabot Strait, & north-east Scotian Shelf). Topics covered include management regulations, the redfish fishery, commercial catch rates, size composition & numbers at age determined from research surveys, and industry perspectives on redfish stocks. The final section provides a brief prognosis for the stock.

The purpose of the workshop was to discuss the results of recent multispecies research, its applications to management, and to consider future directions for research in this field. A total of 26 papers were presented, including a combination of experience papers, state-of-the-art review, and new scientific findings. Sequential sessions were held on fisheries systems research by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, multispecies considerations in fisheries research and management advice in the ICES area, species interactions in the Northeast Pacific and Northwest Atlantic, fisheries interactions, and applications to fisheries management. The workshop concluded with a substantial discussion of implications of present knowledge for advice to fisheries managers and implications for research program planning. The Workshop Report comprises the Chairman's opening remarks, a report on main elements of discussion in the sessions, and a summarization of workshop conclusions.

It showcases how flexibility can be introduced in the fisheries management cycle in order to foster adaptation, strengthen the resilience of fisheries, reduce their vulnerability to climate change, and enable managers to respond in a timely manner to the projected changes in the dynamics of marine resources and ecosystems. The publication includes a set of good practices for climate-adaptive fisheries management that have proven their effectiveness and can be adapted to different contexts, providing a range of options for stakeholders including the fishing industry, fishery managers, policymakers and others involved in decision-making. These good practices were linked to one or more of the three common climate-related impacts on fisheries resources: distributional change; productivity change; and species composition change. Therefore, these three impacts can serve as practical entry points to guide decision-makers in identifying good practice adaptation measures suitable for their local contexts. These good practices are based upon transferable experiences and lessons learned from the thirteen case studies across the globe and hopefully will contribute to greater uptake and implementation of climate-adaptive fisheries management measures on the ground.

As a state with one of the world's longest coastlines, Canada was one of the principal beneficiaries under the 1982 Convention regime. A study of Canadian policy is particularly significant, as Canadian oceans management places in relief many of the difficult questions yet to be resolved.
