Book excerpt: A small collection of early 20th-century advertising ephemera for the Cawston Ostrich Farm in South Pasadena, California, the first ostrich farm in the United States, opened by Edwin Cawston in 1886. Included are three advertising cards describing the new industry of ostrich feathers and plumes that has arisen from the breeding of ostriches at the farm. Two of the cards are illustrated with photographic reproductions of a man and a boy riding an ostrich; the third features a photo of one of the ostriches "Fighting Bob Evans." The electric cards brought customers and tourists to the farm every day from Los Angeles and Pasadena. An early postcard or "Private Mailing Card" shows a young boy feeding the ostriches at the farm. A three-panel brochure for the farm from around 1922 advertises "the original ostrich farm of America," with "gigantic birds in their native haunts." The brochure, printed in orange and black, and illustrated with numerous photographs of the farm grounds and animals, describes the process "from egg to plume" of breeding, hatching, maturing of chicks, clipping of plumage, and manufacturing of plumes, fans, boas, ostrich bags, and ostrich-trimmed hats. Visitors could buy excursion tickets at the Pacific Electric Railway ticket office in Los Angeles for 38 cents round trip including admission. A "Souvenir of Cawston Ostrich Farm" ("Made by Curt Teich & Co., Chicago, Ill.") dating from around 1910 presents a color-illustrated portfolio containing an 8-panel accordion fold-out of 16 color photographic reproductions of ostrich eggs and chicks, feeding time, plucking the feathers, feather creations, exhibit room and factory, drying and dyeing the plumes, and feeding oranges to the ostriches. Finally, a 15-page Cawston trade catalog from around 1914, entitled "The beauty of a Cawston ostrich plume," supplies images, descriptions, and prices for different types of plumes, order blanks for new goods and repair work as well as scenes from the farm.

Hundreds of people took up cameras, and photographers of note chose some of their best work for duplication as photo postcards--sold for a nickel and mailed for a penny to distant friends and relatives. These postcards, which now enjoy another kind of craze in the collecting world, left what author John Miller Morris calls a "significant visual legacy" of the history and social geography of Texas. For more than a decade, Morris has been finding and studying the photographers and methodically gathering their postcards. Book excerpt: San Francisco's colorful history has been explored so extensively that it is surprising to note that its moved buildings remain one of the city's best-kept secrets. Reports are widely scattered in newspapers and architectural references; yet, despite the fact that the city's relocations are second only to Chicago's, there are no books in print concerning this curious history--until now. And it is a long, lively tale indeed. Beginning in 1850 and continuing today, it involves hundreds of moved structures, from houses and apartment buildings to churches and schools. Buildings were relocated for many reasons, from street modifications in the early 1900s to the advent of freeways and Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) in the 1950s and 1960s. Buildings were cut in half and moved in pieces, disassembled and moved brick by brick, or (more commonly) moved intact--some as heavy as 9,000 tons or as long as 110 feet. Buildings moved to San Francisco via ship around Cape Horn, traveled across town using horses and wagons or (later) trucks, and were barged over the Bay.

Book excerpt: Out of Oakland offers a wonderful case study in the possibilities and limitations of transnational organizing. ― Diplomatic History In Out of Oakland, Sean L. Malloy explores the evolving internationalism of the Black Panther Party (BPP); the continuing exile of former members, including Assata Shakur, in Cuba is testament to the lasting nature of the international bonds that were forged during the party's heyday. Founded in Oakland, California, in October 1966 by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, the BPP began with no more than a dozen members. Focused on local issues, most notably police brutality, the Panthers patrolled their West Oakland neighborhood armed with shotguns and law books. Within a few years, the BPP had expanded its operations into a global confrontation with what Minister of Information Eldridge Cleaver dubbed "the international pig power structure." Malloy traces the shifting intersections between the black freedom struggle in the United States, Third World anticolonialism, and the Cold War. By the early 1970s, the Panthers had chapters across the United States as well as an international section headquartered in Algeria and support groups and emulators as far afield as England, India, New Zealand, Israel, and Sweden. The international section served as an official embassy for the BPP and a beacon for American revolutionaries abroad, attracting figures ranging from Black Power skyjackers to fugitive LSD guru Timothy Leary. Engaging directly with the expanding Cold War, BPP representatives cultivated alliances with the governments of Cuba, North Korea, China, North Vietnam, and the People's Republic of the Congo as well as European and Japanese militant groups and the Palestinian Liberation Organization. In an epilogue, Malloy directly links the legacy of the BPP to contemporary questions raised by the Black Lives Matter movement.

Some Americans, though, questioned their expected obligations and instead imagined themselves as "internationalists," as members of communities that transcended national boundaries. Their Asian political collaborators, who included Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh, Foreign Minister of the Provisional Revolutionary Government Nguyen Thi Binh and the Vietnam Women's Union, cultivated relationships with U.S. travelers. These partners from the East and the West worked together to foster what Wu describes as a politically radical orientalist sensibility. By focusing on the travels of individuals who saw themselves as part of an international community of antiwar activists, Wu analyzes how actual interactions among people from several nations inspired transnational identities and multiracial coalitions and challenged the political commitments and personal relationships of individual activists.
