Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures of a Young Naturalist There is no country on the face of the earth that pos sesses greater interest in the eyes of the scientific or travelled than Mexico, the scene where the adventures so graphically and clearly narrated in this volume transpired nor is this partiality to be wondered at when we recall to memory what a lavish hand Nature has subtended to her. Although several of our most celebrated naturalists have climbed its lofty volcanic mountains, explored its lagoons and giant rivers, and traversed its immense forests, still, from the vast extent of that country and variety of climate - caused by difference of elevation - much yet remains to be done ere the public become thoroughly conversant with its arboreal and zoological productions. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A GREAT BOOK." --THE NEW YORK TIMES "MARVELOUS." --THE TELEGRAPH "A RARE GLIMPSE OF A FLEDGLING DAVID ATTENBOROUGH IN THE WILD." --VANITY FAIR Living legend and presenter of BBC's Planet Earth series Sir David Attenborough tells the story of his early career as a broadcaster and a naturalist in his own words. In 1954, David Attenborough, a young television presenter, was offered the opportunity of a lifetime--to travel the world finding rare and elusive animals for the London Zoo's collection, and to film the expedition for the BBC for a new show called Zoo Quest. This is the story of those voyages. Staying with local tribes while trekking in search of giant anteaters in Guyana, Komodo dragons in Indonesia, and armadillos in Paraguay, he and the rest of the team contended with cannibal fish, aggressive tree porcupines, and escape-artist wild pigs, as well as treacherous terrain and unpredictable weather, to record the incredible beauty and biodiversity of these regions. Written with his trademark wit and charm, Adventures of a Young Naturalist is not just the story of a remarkable adventure, but of the man who made us fall in love with the natural world and taught us the importance of protecting it--and who is still doing so today.

Download or read book Diary of a Young Naturalist written by Dara McAnulty and published by Milkweed Editions. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A BuzzFeed "Best Book of June 2021" From sixteen-year-old Dara McAnulty, a globally renowned figure in the youth climate activist movement, comes a memoir about loving the natural world and fighting to save it. Diary of a Young Naturalist chronicles the turning of a year in Dara’s Northern Ireland home patch. Beginning in spring?when “the sparrows dig the moss from the guttering and the air is as puffed out as the robin’s chest?these diary entries about his connection to wildlife and the way he sees the world are vivid, evocative, and moving. As well as Dara’s intense connection to the natural world, Diary of a Young Naturalist captures his perspective as a teenager juggling exams, friendships, and a life of campaigning. We see his close-knit family, the disruptions of moving and changing schools, and the complexities of living with autism. “In writing this book,” writes Dara, “I have experienced challenges but also felt incredible joy, wonder, curiosity and excitement. In sharing this journey my hope is that people of all generations will not only understand autism a little more but also appreciate a child’s eye view on our delicate and changing biosphere.” Winner of the Wainwright Prize for UK nature writing and already sold into more than a dozen territories, Diary of a Young Naturalist is a triumphant debut from an important new voice.

This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of John James Audubon, the Naturalist Of the work Audubon has done, nothing need be said in praise here. Even were I competent to discuss his merits as an ornithologist and ornithological painter, I should be si lent, for the world has already settled those merits in full. I may trust myself, however, to say one word in praise of Au dubon as a descriptive writer. Some of his reminiscences of adventure, some of which are published in this book, seem to me to be quite as good, in vividness of presentment and care ful coloring, as anything I have ever read. Download or read book The Butterfly Hunters in the Caribbees Classic Reprint written by Eugene Murray-Aaron and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Butterfly Hunters in the Caribbees The author deems it well to state that in the following account of the adventures of two young naturalists in the West Indies he has simply taken his heroes over ground with which he is thoroughly familiar, and has reproduced in their experience scenes and incidents that have been a part of his life as an exploring naturalist. He has required nothing of the credulity of his readers no fruit has been gathered out of season, nor flower picked at an unnatural time of year; no animal or plant has been collected out of its regular geographical range, nor any fact of nature been recorded that is not known to belong to the regions traversed. In a word, scientific accuracy has been the main guiding principle in the production of this work, and if it has thereby lost something of the startling nature usually imparted to such books, the author feels that his readers, the older young people and the younger old peo ple, will not regard this as a real loss, but rather again in. Download or read book Harper s Book for Young Naturalists written by A. Hyatt Verrill and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harper's Book for Young Naturalists: A Guide to Collecting and Preparing Specimens, With Descriptions of the Life, Habits and Haunts of Birds, Insects, Plants, Etc Early every normal boy possesses an inborn desire to collect something. Whether this tendency finds expression in gathering butter ies, mineral specimens, birds' eggs, or other objects depends largely upon the boy's surroundings and opportunity. There is no question as to the value and interest of collections, if properly made, even of very ordinary things, but in the majority of cases the boys' collections are merely hodge-podge accumulations of trash, and worthless odds and ends gathered here, there, and everywhere Without definite object or reason. Such collections are worthless, and merely litter up a home, and prove a nuisance; and it is this class of collecting that has caused many parents to frown on collections of any kind. Stamps, coins, relics, and antiquities all have their proper place and value, but such things do not necessitate any knowledge of nature or her ways; nor do they take the col lector out into highways and byways, to woods and meadows, fields and glades, to Seek his specimens. The collection of any class of objects that will get the boy out into the open and close to nature, should be encouraged and commended, and when such collections are made with any sort of system they cannot fail to be of educational value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Naturalist on the River Amazons Having been urged to prepare a new edition of this work for a wider circle than that contemplated in the former one, I have thought it advisable to condense those portions which, treating of abstruse scientific questions, presuppose a larger amount of Natural History knowledge than an author has a right to expect of the general reader. The personal narrative has been left entire together with those descriptive details likely to interest all classes, young and old, relating to the great river itself, and the wonderful country through which it flows, - the luxuriant primaeval forests that clothe almost every part of it, the climate, productions, and inhabitants. Book Naturalist

Download or read book Naturalist written by Edward O. Wilson and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2006-04-24 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward O. Wilson -- University Professor at Harvard, winner of two Pulitzer prizes, eloquent champion of biodiversity -- is arguably one of the most important thinkers of the twentieth century. His career represents both a blueprint and a challenge to those who seek to explore the frontiers of scientific understanding. Yet, until now, little has been told of his life and of the important events that have shaped his thought. In Naturalist, Wilson describes for the first time both his growth as a scientist and the evolution of the science he has helped define. He traces the trajectory of his life -- from a childhood spent exploring the Gulf Coast of Alabama and Florida to life as a tenured professor at Harvard -- detailing how his youthful fascination with nature blossomed into a lifelong calling. He recounts with drama and wit the adventures of his days as a student at the University of Alabama and his four decades at Harvard University, where he has achieved renown as both teacher and researcher. As the narrative of Wilson's life unfolds, the reader is treated to an inside look at the origin and development of ideas that guide today's biological research. Theories that are now widely accepted in the scientific world were once untested hypotheses emerging from one mans's broad-gauged studies. Throughout Naturalist, we see Wilson's mind and energies constantly striving to help establish many of the central principles of the field of evolutionary biology. The story of Wilson's life provides fascinating insights into the making of a scientist, and a valuable look at some of the most thought-provoking ideas of our time.
