Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures of a Country Boy All good men love children, but my father not only loved, he respected them. This respect which he had for children was, I think, the secret of his power over them, which was quite as remarkable as his literary success in writing for them. In a true sense it might be said that he treated children as his equals, not through any device or from any scheme, but spontaneously and naturally. He never deceived children, never tricked them with cunning devices, never lied to them. This may seem small praise, yet men - and for that matter women - who never lie to children are, I am afraid, a rather small minority. A promise to a child was quite as sacred in his eyes as a promise to a grown person. He would as soon have thought of defaulting on a promissory note as defaulting on a promise to a child. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Boy in the Country The hill stood roughly square, bounded on two sides by the road afore-mentioned, on one side by the burn on the fourth it was divided from other lands by a high straggling hedge and wide ditch. Foot passengers rarely used the road; they crossed the hill by a long, straight track which, at the top, led through an opening in a broad, low wall, or fence, of stones which had been gathered off the land for more than two hundred years, and which divided the hill into two vast fields. Whins ourished among the great, moss Covered boulders of the foundation on both Sides, and, where earth could be found, in the wide, irregularly heaped masses of smaller stones on top. The traveller, ascending the eastern Slope at sunset, saw before and above him the rugged outline of the fence, and rounded masses of whin, in black shadow with a glowing sky behind, and in the centre, the Opening through which he was to pass, like a golden gate that opened on the heavens. In itself the Big Hill furnished delights and terrors, so many as not to be exhausted by the boy in one whole summer. There were fish in the burn, birds' nests in the grass and hedges, riotous plant life in the ragged fencings, wild strawberries on the banks, hares on the long slopes, and weasels among the stones of the great dividing wall. It was common to call the long, lithe, venomous little beasts weasels - in reality, as naturalists know, they were stoats. Fearsome creatures were these weasels, reputed deadly in attack even at two yards' distance, through their power of spitting. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boy Land Boomer: Or Dick Arbuckle's Adventures in Oklahoma The Boy Land Boomer relates the adventures of a lad who, with 1118 father, joins a number of daring men in an attempt to occupy the rich farming lands of Oklahoma before the time when that section of our country was thrown open to settlement under the homestead act. Oklahoma consists of a tract of land which formerly formed a portion of the Indian Territory. This region was much in dispute as early as 1884 and 1885, when Captain Oklahoma Payne and Captain Couch did their best to force an entrance for the boomers under them. Boomers remained in the neighborhood for years, and another attempt was made to settle Okla homa in 1886, and up to 1889, when, on April 22, the land was thrown Open to settlement by a proclamation of the President. The mad rush to gain the best claims followed, and some of these scenes are related in the present volume.
